Between the sense of work and students’ reading concretisation. The significance of theory of literature in school education of literature (the outline of problem) The article depicts a synthesis of views on the role and significance of theory of literature in school practice of reading from the interwar period to contemporary times. It consists of three parts. In the first one the authors discuss the view of S. Skwarczyńska who sees theory of literature as fundamental in developing the analytical and interpretative skills of high school students. A reflection of textual reality in reader’s consciousness depends on the sense of literary work and its concretisation (or individuality, which is independent from reader’s perception). This view (and other scholars’ beliefs) did not solve more difficult issues, such as how to combine the analysis of the work structure with the involvement of student’s emotions. In later stages of the development of didactics of literature, the rift between the methods of text interpretation and theory of cognition, the aim of which is an aesthetic experience, did not offer satisfying methodological solutions. In the second part of the article the authors discuss a variety of methods serving to “improve”/modify the structural concept (of B. Chrząstowska), retaining its most significant elements: systematisation and organisation of students’ literary experience. These activities were inspired by new trends in the development of humanities thought (hermeneutics, cultural theory of literature, anthropology, poetics of experience). They recognize the primacy of reading over poetics, and interpretation over theory of literature which is given an important, anthropo-cognitive role. One of such proposals, which was fully used in I like it!, the series of course books (of Z.A. Kłakówna and others) designed for all levels of school Polish language and literature education, was discussed in the third part of the article. The place of theory of literature in the system of science of literature was changed over many years; as a result, its role in school education decreased. Contemporary didactic discourse demonstrates the complexity of the problem but it does not solve it unambiguously. It does not offer a “readymade” knowledge on the universal order of analytical and interpretation practices, but it obligates Polish philology teachers to be creative and to search for best solutions for their students. As such, it requires a professional philological preparation during the time of studies.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the techniques of color painting and light painting in the story of the neorealist writer I.A. Bunin “The Mad Artist”. The relevance is due to the fact that in the modern education system, more attention is paid to innovative pedagogical receptions designed to optimize the educational process and ensure greater independence in work. In particular, interest in case technology is growing. The purpose of the article is the philological analysis of the story of I.A. Bunin’s “The Mad Artist” with the use of case technology techniques. The authors of the article take a case teaching the analysis and assessment of the situation as the basis for working with the text of the Bunin story. Based on it, the article presents an analysis of the linguistic parameters of a literary text and the means of their representation at the lexico-semantic level, revealing the techniques of color and light painting used by the writer in a work and participating in the implementation of the main principle of constructing a text – antithesis. The analysis is based on the comparative-comparative method, methods of citation and holistic analysis of a literary work. As a result of the research, a Russian language lesson was developed for high school students on the topic «Color and light painting as components of the creator’s world in I.A. Bunin̕ s story “The Mad Artist”» based on the techniques of case technology. The solution of the proposed case contributes to the development of creative and critical thinking of students, the formation of skills to work both individually and in pairs, the development of communicative and linguistic competencies.

The author’s aim of the analysis presented in this article is an attempt at answering two questions: how high school students verbalize the lexeme sex, and whether it is possible to discern quantitative and qualitative differences in understanding and evaluating this notion by girls and boys. High school students were faced with three tasks concerning: 1. giving associations connected with the word sex; 2. listing adjectives collocating with the analyzed category; 3. constructing their own definitions of the noun. Both associations and collocations listed by the students appeared to be extremely varied and rich. They confirmed the opinion according to which every man treats sex differently and proved that young people are not afraid of their needs, desires or sexual dreams. Sex is not a taboo subject for them. Contrary to the associations, which abounded with an extremely large number of vulgar expressions, the definitions of the analyzed lexeme were, in fact, deprived of such attributes. Apart from a tendency to convey the word’s semantics precisely, the descriptions constructed by the high school students revealed emotionality. On the other hand, however, they showed changes in awareness, habits and social conduct of young users of the Polish language.

Introduction: Thirty eight states have laws requiring education of high school students on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). No study has measured the association of these laws and outcomes. Hypothesis: Out of hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) occurring in states with CPR high school education laws will have higher bystander CPR, survival, and favorable neurological survival than states without such laws. Methods: We conducted an analysis of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival database and included all nontraumatic OHCAs with at least 50% population catchment from 1/2013-12/2017 in all ages. We excluded OHCAs witnessed by 911 responders, in healthcare facilities, or nursing homes. Outcomes were bystander CPR, survival to hospital discharge and neurologically favorable survival (Cerebral Performance Category score of 1 or 2 at hospital discharge). Chi-square tests were used to assess associations. Results: The 110,902 subjects with OHCA included Male, 64.0%; <18 yrs., 3.2%; <35 yrs., 10.7%; <50 yrs., 23.9%; White, 49.3%; Black, 19.1%; Hispanic, 2.3%; Other, 2.9%; Unknown, 26.5%. Most OHCAs occurred at home, 81.4%. 44.4% were witnessed by bystanders. 75.5% occurred in states with CPR high school education laws. A higher percent of OHCAs received bystander CPR prior to emergency medical services (EMS) arrival in states with CPR high school education laws (40.1%) compared to states without laws (37.0%) (p<0.001). Bystander CPR was less common in males (40.3% vs. 37.7% for females), those >50 yrs. (38.9% vs. 40.7% for ≤50 yrs.), Black and Hispanic subjects (25.7% and 34.9%, respectively, vs. 42.4% for Whites) (p<0.001 for all). Overall survival to hospital discharge was 10.4%; 8.8% had a favorable neurological outcome. A higher percent survived to hospital discharge in states with CPR high school education laws (11.0%) compared to states without laws (8.7%) (p<0.001). Neurologically favorable survival was more likely in states with CPR high school education laws, (9.3%) compared to states without laws (7.5%) (p<0.001). Conclusions: Bystander CPR, survival to hospital discharge, and neurologically favorable survival was higher in states that had CPR high school education laws.

This study integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine the roles that mental translation plays in reading classical Chinese and English as a foreign language among Taiwanese high school students. Gadamer’s theory of hermeneutic experience and the Vygotskian social-cultural theory provide the theoretical frameworks for this study. The quantitative data consist of reading comprehension tests and translation surveys, while the qualitative data are composed of think-aloud protocols and interviews with the participating students and their teachers. At least two prominent findings emerge from the data analyses: (1) mental translation appears to have positive and significant associations with reading comprehension across two languages; (2) ambivalent perceptions of and attitudes toward the employment of mental translation for reading classical literary Chinese and English are discerned. The findings support Gadamer’s contention that humans learn to translate as they are learning a language. The views and ideas expressed by the participating teachers and students uncover a sociocultural dimension of reading, as proposed by Vygotsky.
