Abstract This study investigated substituting groundnut cake with wheat bran mixed with cattle blood at ratio1:1 in broilers and it lasted for eight weeks. Seventy-five broiler chicks were allotted randomly to five treatment replicated thrice. Control had 15% GNC, 0% blood meal wheat bran (BMWB) in diets II -V GNC was replaced with BMWB at graded levels of 25,50,75 and 100%. Results revealed that body weight gain and feed intake of diets II and III were similar and (P = 0.05) higher than other diets at both phases. Feed efficiency of diet II was better than others at the starter phase while diet III was better at finisher phase. Haematology and serum chemistry at the finisher phase showed that heamoglobin, white blood cell lymphocyte heterophil and plasma of the birds fed diets II, III, IV and V were (P < 0.05) higher than those on control. The kidney liver and spleen histopathology revealed hepatic and renal degeneration, necrosis and inflammatory responses in diets IV and V. Carcass characteristics showed the wings shanks drumstick leg heart and spleen of birds on BMWB were higher than control. Conclusively it seems BMWB could replace GNC without adverse effect on the broilers at 25% inclusion level

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of poultry waste meal (PWM) on growth of Clarias gariepinus juveniles The growth response of juveniles of average weight 6.5g fed poultry waste meal (PWM) was studied for 70 days. The poultry waste meal comprised the droppings from the layers pen, some maggots, broken eggs and feeds that fell during the course of feeding. The proximate analysis of PWM had crude protein value of 9.795 %, crude fibre 8.700 %, ash 25.174 %, moisture 10.794%, carbohydrate 44.286% and fat 1.250% respectively. Five diets were formulated; which were Diet A (Control: with 0% inclusion level of poultry waste meal, B (25%), C (50%), D (75%),  and E with 100% inclusion level (total replacement with poultry waste meal). There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between the control and all other diets in the values recorded for growth and nutrient utilization, even up to 100% substitution of maize with PWM. The cost of feed production decreased with increase in inclusion levels of PWM in the diets. The results of the study showed that the use of PWM could be considered in the diet of C. gariepinus even up to 100% substitution level; considering the huge cost of maize and competition for its use whereas PMW is obtainable at little or no cost.

This research investigated the growth performance of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings (mean weight 1.130.3g) fed cockroach meal (CM) as replacement for fish meal (FM). The fish were fed with three diets containing 45% crude protein; diet 1 (control 0% CM and 0% FM) diet 2 (10% FM, 0% CM), diet 3 (10% CM, 0% FM) for 56 days. The results showed significant differences (p<0.05) for the growth parameters evaluated for the treatments. Cockroach meal-based diet gave the best results in terms of mean weight gain (1.39+0.39g), food conversion ratio (2.54+0.15), specific growth rate (1.440.29%/day), protein efficiency ratio (0.87±0.20), apparent net protein utilization (16.23±7.19) and survival rate of 62%. This was followed by fish meal-based diet while the control diet gave a significantly (p<0.05) lower values. It can be concluded from the study that cockroach meal can substitute fish meal at 10% inclusion level. However, further study can be conducted for higher inclusion levels of cockroach meal in the diets of C. gariepinus. Keywords: Insect meal, protein, catfish, feed, growth.

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of biscuit waste meal on the growth performance and utilization of Clarias gariepinus juveniles. A total of 300 juveniles of average weight 8.85g were randomly divided into five Treatments, each Treatment had three replicates. Twenty juveniles were distributed into each happa (0.7m3). The happa were suspended to ¾ of their volume using kuralon ropes carefully tied round the bamboo poles across the concrete tanks. Five diets containing 40% crude protein were formulated in which maize was replaced with biscuit waste meal at treatment; Diet 1 (TD1) 0%, 25% (TD2), 50% (TD3), 75% (TD4), 100% (TD5) levels. The fish were fed at 3% body weight per day for 10weeks. The results showed that biscuit waste was most suitable as an energy supplement when incorporated at 25% replacement (TD2) with maize. TD1 had the highest weight gain followed by TD2, TD3, TD4 and TD5 respectively. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the growth response in TD1 (0%), TD2 (25%) and TD3 (50%). It is therefore concluded that biscuit waste meal is a cheap source of non conventional energy source which can be used favorably to replace maize (25% inclusion level) as an energy source in the diets of C. gariepinus.

Abstract. A 56-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of processing time, inclusion level and/or their interactions on serum biochemistry, haematology and histology of the liver and kidney of Clarias gariepinus fed diets containing Luffa cylindrica seedmeal. The five formulated diets were designated as control (CTR) and tested, replaced at 15 and 30% by 5- and 10-min toasted Luffa cylindrica seedmeal (D515T, D530T, D1015T and D1030T). The experimental design followed a 2×2 factorial experiment in a completely randomised design; the processing time of 5- and 10-min toasting and inclusion level of 15 and 30% serves as factors. Triplicate groups of each treatment were made. Blood sampling, harvesting of organs, serum biochemistry, histology and haematological studies followed standard procedures. The results of the study showed that the effect of processing time, inclusion level and their interactions had significant impact (p<0.05) on Clarias gariepinus. A decrease in RBC, PCV and Hb was observed when compared with control for inclusion level, processing time and/or their interaction. Total protein, albumin and globulin of the blood of fish fed diet CTR was not significantly different (p>0.05) from that of the blood of the fish fed D1015T. Mild to moderate vacuolation of the hepatocytes were recorded among the livers of fish fed control and test dietary treatments except those fed D1030T that recorded very severe vacuolation of the hepatocytes. The kidney, being the excretory organ, was also affected. However, normal cell architecture was recorded in fish fed CTR, D530T and D1030T.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. This industry supplies half of thefisheries products consumed annually, and future global demand can only be supplied by increasingaquaculture production, which, in turn, requires more aquafeed. Alternative ingredients must beincreasingly used to supply significant proportions of protein and energy in aquafeeds, creatingboth challenges and opportunities for researchers and industry. Nowadays, there are too manyresearches on fish disease, growth and health but less in a fish feed especially a replacement ofprotein from plant sources in the fish feed. One of the alternative ways to optimise the growth andhealth condition of the fish is provide them a good protein from plant as a replacement in fish mealwith the natural source protein instead of giving a good rearing condition and caring of the fish.The present article was constructed to highlight a replacement of plant protein sources as analternative of fish meal for fish feed in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus that has been done byresearchers. However, the application of replacement from plant protein sources in fish meal is nowgradually gaining importance in commercial aquaculture practices and opened the door for theresearchers to expend of this application, thus more detailed studies on molecular basis should belooked as to get the quality and enough nutrient fish feed for good production of aquacultureindustry.
