<p>Some areas in the city of Bandung is an area that dilitasi by the flow of the river, to prevent the introduction of garbage into the river basin is necessary to note the waste management systems in residential areas along the river. Cidurian river has a length of 24.86 Km along the river flow. Consists of the city of Bandung and Bandung regency. Administrative regions Cidurian River past eight (8) districts, from the region in the District Kiaracondong precisely Village Babakan Babakan Sari and Surabaya populous and the most densely populated. Thus, there should be community-based waste management in the form of a reduction in resources to prevent potential entry of waste into the river basin. Planning waste reduction will be divided into two, namely the reduction of inorganic waste with waste bank then the reduction of organic waste with absorption holes biopori, and bio reactor mini determination of the reduction is determined by the results of the analysis of the sampling covers the composition and garbage, then the result of the measurement characteristics test and analysis results questionnaire.</p>

Due to enhanced healthcare needs brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of biomedical waste generated has also increased manifold across the globe. With the world in global crisis due to the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has put great pressure on the biomedical waste management system in India and around the world. To control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, proper disposal of the waste is essential to reduce any risk of secondary transmission. This paper investigates the situation of biomedical waste management in the city of Thane in Maharashtra due to the onset of COVID-19 and suggests some key recommendations to the policymakers to help handle biomedical waste from possible future pandemics. The study found that there was an 81% increase in the total biomedical waste (BMW) generation in 2020, when compared to 2019 and the yellow category waste from COVID-19 centres was the highest contributor to this waste. It was also found that though there was a slight increase in yellow category waste, the total biomedical waste from non- COVID healthcare facilities (HCFs) was comparable to that of the waste generated in HCFs during 2019, revealing that there was conscious reduction in the usage of single use PPEs at non- COVID HCFs. The city, despite owning a Central Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF), was dependent on another incinerator at the Hazardous Waste Management Treatment facility (HWTF) for treatment of the additional waste generated. Unforeseen situation like these, expose the vulnerability of our existing biomedical waste management system and reinforces the need for investing and improving them for strengthening preparedness in the future. The situation also demands periodic education on importance of source segregation and waste reduction through rational use, disinfection and disposal of PPEs.

Resumo Normas relacionadas à gestão de Resíduos de Construção Civil (RCC) estão vigentes no Brasil há mais de uma década. O intuito dessa gestão é amenizar os impactos ambientais decorrentes do gerenciamento indevido desses resíduos. O objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar a conformidade técnica e legal de sistemas de gerenciamento de resíduos de construção civil no município de Curitiba. Para tal, elaborou-se uma lista de verificação baseada nas normas em vigor e em alguns modelos de certificações ambientais, como: LEED, AQUA, CASBEE, BREAM e HQE. 24 obras de edifícios residenciais e comerciais foram  visitadas — com ou sem certificação ambiental. Essa lista de verificação foi aplicada nas construções, para realizar um diagnóstico do setor. Apesar da gestão de resíduos ser obrigatória e restritiva à obtenção dos certificados de conclusão de obra, os resultados da pesquisa demonstraram que há problemas na segregação, acondicionamento e transporte dos resíduos. Entretanto, a falta de conscientização e a aparente conformidade documental não se traduz em efetivo gerenciamento dos RCC. Palavras-chave: Resíduos de construção e demolição. Gestão de resíduos. Resíduos sólidos. Auditorias ambientais. Abstract Standards related to the management of Construction Waste (CW) have been in force in Brazil for more than a decade. The goal of this management is to alleviate the environmental impacts resulting from the poor management of these wastes. The objective of this work is to investigate the technical and legal compliance of construction waste management systems in the city of Curitiba. To this end, a checklist was drawn up based on current standards and on some models of environmental certifications, such as: LEED, AQUA, CASBEE, BREAM and HQE. 24 works of residential and commercial buildings were visited — with or without environmental certification.  A checklist was applied, in these buildings, to promote a diagnosis of the sector. Although waste management is mandatory and restrictive to obtain building completion certificates, the research results showed that there are problems in the segregation, packaging and transport of waste. However, the lack of awareness and the apparent documentary compliance does not translate into effective management of the CW. Keywords:  Construction and demolition waste. Waste management. Generally, activities conducted by people generate waste. The waste which increasingly rises causing a big problem. Therefore, the role of community in waste management will strongly support the process of solving the waste problem in the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of engagement and active participation of citizens, as reflected in the attitude of citizens in the activities related to the response to the waste problem in the community. A descriptive method was used in this study to describe the involvement and participation in the prevention of waste. The result showed that the paradigm of PSBM (community-based waste management) appeared sporadically and has not yet received the maximum support from regional governments. A paradigm which is “people pay, the government manages“, has grown within the community for years. It would hardly change people’s behaviour patterns in solving the waste problem in the community since changing the city into a city that is clean, comfortable and healthy involved many parties, including the community.

The present alarming environmental world crisis is the uncontrolled generation and illegal dumping of solid waste (SW) that poses great harm to public health and the environment (Ali & Sion, 2014). Poor waste management may cause air, water, and soil contamination. The Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003) or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (ESWMA) had been in place for several years. However, its implementation was a challenge for every LGU, including in a highly urbanized city. Hence, the paper examined the level of implementation of the provisions and enforcement of prohibited acts on ESWMA of barangays as assessed by community leaders as a whole and according to their geographical location and income. Also, it explores the challenges encountered by the barangays and the recommendations of the community leaders in the implementation of RA 9003 and the local ordinance enacted by the city.

The research method is qualitative with phenomenological approach. The research design using one site involving Banjarmasin City in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data collection techniques used were content analysis, participatory observation and depth interviews. The analysis used in answering this research is a combination of various analytical methods to answer each of the objectives namely miles & Huberman analysis and Webbed Spider Model Analysis as the ultimate in formulating management of plastic waste through a leadership role. The results of this research found that the adaptation of environmentally sound habits in minimizing the production of plastics waste through local wisdom approaches and changing the people's mindset to live healtier. The purpose of writing this paper is to provide examples of new habits of healthy living by starting to reduce the use of plastic bags as the main source of waste generation that is not easily biodegradable in Banjarmasin City produced in every citi anywhere and is a major problem of environmental damage, including Banjarmasin City as a city of a thousand rivers, south Kalimantan Province. Effort to reduce the use of pastic bags began in stages, starting with modern retailers in the City of Banjarmasin. Through a leadership role based on local wisdom and a persuasive approach that is environmentally sound, it can provide solutions in current and future waste management. Result from this research is Banjramasin as the first City in Indonesia implemented regulation to reduction of plastic waste for modern retailers which are widely scattered throughout the City, sub-districts and villages. This is effective through regulation and direct approach to society. In the waste management that is carried out in the City of Banjarmasin includes waste reduction activities with ten activities and waste handling through five activities. As a substitute for these plastic bags, plastic bag producers are forced to use environmentally friendly plastic bags and / or purun baskets which are products of local wisdom of the people of South Kalimantan, Indonesia, all of these activities are carried out by involving the community by applying the rules without sanctions. Until this paper was written, there has never been a leader with leadership who has implemented a similar regulation as a direct effort from the role of a leader in reducing the use of plastic bags, where the use of plastic bags is the biggest contributor as a source of producing plastic waste.

In recent decades Urbanization is increased tremendously. At the same phase there is an increase in waste production. These days managing the waste has become very important issue to be considered for keeping the city clean. The system is built on Arduino board which is connected with GSM modem and Ultrasonic sensor for waste management. The smart waste bin can be used to keep the city clean. The system is built such that it can measure the weight and amount waste in bin, also adapt with network environment, to manage all information from waste management to the municipality so that we can keep the city clean.

Generation of solid waste (SW) is a major problem in urban areas, thus its management is one of the important obligatory functions to not only urban local authority but also for the inhabitants. The citizens expressed their concerns about the waste management system in KCC and associated problems that they are encountering. Waste generation in Khulna City Corporation is around 455 tons of municipal solid waste/day and generation rate is now 0.75 Kg/capita/day on an average. Existing public utility services and facilities are not adequate to meet the demand of disposing these massive amounts of wastes and that’s why several problems are arising. There are some deterrents in the KCC’s solid waste Management system, arising from both the city corporation authority and the citizen of different levels. With a view to address the problem from through community participation, this paper intends to evaluate the potential of community based solid waste management approach in context of Khulna city.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the present municipal solid wastes (MSWs) management system, from an engineering management (EM) perspective, for the City of Kitwe while proposing a levers-driven sustainable municipal solid waste management (MSWM) model focussing on improving waste management (WM). Design/methodology/approach The research work involves four stages. First, a comprehensive review of literature is conducted on MSWM. Second, structured interviews are conducted with key experts in solid waste management in the City of Kitwe in order to enhance the knowledge inputs. Third, direct observations and an interview with a WM driver are conducted in order to understand; the collection, disposal and treatment options for MSWs. Lastly, a sustainable model for managing MSWs is proposed Findings The research findings indicate that the existing MSW system for the city is highly unsustainable and lacks EM methodologies. There are still a number of challenges in the management of MSWs which include: lack of proper collection and storage of MSWs; lack of an engineered landfill; lack of waste recovery and treatment systems; and lack of public education aimed at reducing and separating MSWs. Practical implications A correct and detailed database for waste generation, collection, treatment and disposal is needed for the City of Kitwe. The system is necessary for WM resources allocation as well as for planning sustainable WM projects. The proposed model has been developed based on the actual observations, data collection and analysis. Originality/value The research identifies a gap in the management of MSWs for the City of Kitwe. This work is original as no similar MSW model has been proposed globally and specific for a developing economy such as Africa.
