The article describes a subsystem of exercises and tasks for the formation of English language lexical competence in professionally oriented active reading for students of the field of knowledge 19 Architecture and construction, specialty 192 Construction and civil engineering. The stages of the formation of English-language lexical competence in professionally oriented active reading are determined and characterized: 1) acquaintance, 2) automation, 3) application. To form this competence, we consider effective the following methods of active reading: Know- Want-Learn (KWL), SQ3R (Survey, Questions, Read, Recall, Review) and examples of exercises and tasks performed at each stage of working with authentic texts. The subsystem of exercises and tasks is described and implemented at the pre-text, text and post-text stages of work. All educational information for the formation of lexical competence in English reading is accompanied by an authentic visualization which we understand as conditionally technical (drawings, figures, photographs, diagrams, charts, graphs, videos, etc.). Authentic visualization of educational information is developed as a supplement to textual material for better understanding and perception information on the specialty and complements it. The organization of the stages of lexical competence formation is taken into account during the developing the exercises and tasks.

Обосновано использование терминов интернета, связанных с ситуациями реальной коммуникации в процессе обучения иностранному языку в средней школе. Определены принципы организации лексического материала с использованием интернет-терминов при формировании лексической компетенции обучающихся иностранному (английскому) языку. Рассматривается возможность использования словарей тезаурусного типа, составленных на основе интернет-терминологии, для формирования лексических навыков учащихся. Предложены принципы отбора словообразовательного минимума и словообразовательных моделей, предлагается комплекс упражнений по обучению приемам узнавания и понимания сложных и производных слов в области интернета. Задачей обучения английскому языку с использованием отобранного лексического материала является усвоение учащимися связи семантических отношений лексических единиц в общеразговорном языке и их значений в специфической предметной области интернет-технологий. В статье приведены примеры лексических единиц - терминов интернет-лексики, которые обучающиеся используют в реальной коммуникации в разных контекстах. The article substantiates the use of Internet terms associated with situations of real communication in the process of teaching a foreign language in secondary school. The principles of organizing lexical material using Internet terms in the formation of the lexical competence of students in a foreign (English) language have been determined. The possibility of using dictionaries of the thesaurus type compiled on the basis of Internet terminology for the formation of lexical skills of students is considered. The article proposes the principles of selection of the word-formation minimum and word-formation models, a set of exercises for teaching the techniques of recognition and understanding of complex and derivative words in the field of the Internet. The task of teaching English using the selected lexical material is the assimilation by students of the connection between the semantic relations of lexical units in the general spoken language and their meanings in a specific subject area of Internet technologies. The article provides examples of lexical units - Internet vocabulary terms that students use in real communication in different contexts

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.

Children's literature serves as a powerful medium through which children construct messages about their roles In society and gender Identity is often central to this construction. Although possessing mental schemas about gender differences is helpful when children organize their ideas of the world around them, problems occur when children are exposed to a constant barrage of uncompromising, gender-schematic sources that lead to stereotyping which in turn represses the full development of the child. This paper focuses on how gender is represented in a selection of Malaysian children's books published in the English language. Relying on the type of content analysis employed by previous feminist social science researchers, I explore this selection of Malaysian children's books for young children and highlight some areas of concern with regard to the construction of maleness and femaleness in these texts. The results reveal Imbalances at various levels Including the distribution of main, supporting and minor characters along gendered lines and the positioning of male and female characters In the visual Illustrations. The stereotyping of these characters In terms of their behavioural traits will be discussed with the aim of drawing attention to the need for us to take concerted measures to provide our children with books that will help them realize their potential to the fullest.

There is evidence to suggest that young children more readily absorb the subtle messages that are encoded in any type of text and talk, and what they take away from these texts contributes in helping them develop their own identity in relation to their role in society. In this paper, we examine the construction of ethnic identity in a selection of English language textbooks targeted at young Malaysian children in primary schools. Based on a content analysis of visual and verbal language in two Primary Three English language textbooks, we report on the encoded messages that are transmitted to young Malaysian children about their place in society. The findings reveal significant imbalances in the way characters of different ethnic backgrounds are represented. This imbalance is a cause for concern as the message conveyed to young Malaysian children could be potentially damaging. Keywords: textbook, ethnicity, identity construction

Books have long been recognized  resources for health literacy and healing (Fosson & Husband, 1984). Individuals with health conditions or disabilities or who are dealing with illness, disability or death among friends or loved ones, can find solace and affirmation in fictional works that depict characters coping with similar health conditions. This study asked the question “If we were to select a new collection of children’s health-related fiction in mid-2014, which books would we select and what selection criteria would we apply?”  The results of this study are a set of criteria for the selection of  current English language literary works with health-related content for the pre-kindergarten to Grade 6 (age 12) audience http://hdl.handle.net/10402/era.38842, a collection of books that are readily available to Canadian libraries - selected against these criteria http://hdl.handle.net/10402/era.38843, a special issue of the Deakin Review of Children’s Literature -  dedicated to juvenile health fiction, and book exhibits in two libraries to accompany the Deakin Review issue.

Editor's Note: Guidelines for Selecting Books to Review Occasionally, we receive questions regarding the selection of books reviewed in the Journal of Economic Literature. A statement of our guidelines for book selection might be useful, therefore. The general purpose of our book reviews is to help keep members of the American Economic Association informed of significant English-language publications in economics research. Annotations are published of all books received. However, we receive many more books than we are able to review so choices must be made in selecting books for review. We try to identify for review scholarly, well-researched books that embody serious and original research on a particular topic. We do not review textbooks. Other things equal, we avoid volumes of collected papers such as festschriften and conference volumes. Often such volumes pose difficult problems for the reviewer who may find himself having to describe and evaluate many different contributions. Among such volumes, we prefer those on a single, well-defined theme that a typical reviewer may develop in his review. A volume that collects together papers from a wide assortment of different topics is not preferred to one devoted exclusively to one topic. We avoid volumes that collect previously published papers unless there is some material value added from bringing the papers together. Also, we refrain from reviewing second or revised editions unless the revisions of the original edition are really substantial. Our policy is not to accept offers to review (and unsolicited reviews of) particular books. We have examined the consequences of an alternative policy and have determined that we lack the resources to deal appropriately with unsolicited reviews. Coauthorship of reviews is not forbidden but discouraged and we ask our invited reviewers to discuss with us first any changes in the authorship or assigned length of a review. Learning literature, as part of the English Language Syllabus, has been practiced in many countries. In Malaysia, literature is incorporated as a component and an authentic means of learning the language with the hope that students acquire the desired language skills. However, poetry, one of the genres in the component, is the least favourable among students. This paper investigates students’ attitude towards learning poetry and the challenges they encountered learning poetry. Data from 120 respondents were collected through questionnaire and interviews. The findings revealed that the selection of texts for poetry in the literature component and teacher’s methodology play a role in cultivating students' interest in learning not only the language but also the context, culture, and values as well as inculcating a positive attitude towards learning poetry in second language acquisition.

This is a study of high school students’ attitudes toward the English language in Lebanon. The purpose of this research is to assess the extent of use of English inside and outside the schools taking into consideration the attitude towards the language. Two schools were selected, one upper middle class and one lower middle class. This selection of different social classes aims at finding whether a student’s socio- economical background affects his/ her attitude toward the English language. The sample of respondents returned 52 questionnaires from the two schools. Although this sample was a modest one, it highlighted the differences in attitudes towards the English language, but these attitudes did not relate much to the socioeconomic class as much as personal preferences. However, what was salient in this research is how students from the lower middle class were more inclined to use English to raise their social status and both groups agreed that English is essential to their progress in life.
