The present study examines the effectiveness of body scan meditation of mindfulness based stress reduction on craving in patient with alcohol dependence. An inpatient of 36year old with diagnosis of alcohol dependence disorder as per ICD-10 DCR criterion was selected purposively, from Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi. Following detoxification subject was evaluated for withdrawal symptoms, severity of alcohol dependence and craving. The subject was purposefully assigned for receiving body scan meditation, underwent 45 minutes guided meditation and 15 minutes discussion for one week. Patient showed significant reduction in craving after one week body scan meditation. Findings of current study shows that there is significant reduction in craving after one week of body scan meditation in alcohol dependence patient.

In this article, we open with a discussion of stress and its potential impact on the teaching profession. We then follow with an empirical rationale for and steps in the implementation of potentially promising mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) interventions for teachers, particularly teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Body scan, calm breathing, focused attention, and relaxation are highlighted. A list of resources for further use of MBSR is included.

Although effect of mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) are effective and highly valued, but all the patients will not be interested due to extensive time and cost. Brief interventions (e.g., body scans) may be used by individuals, at a lower cost and with little training. Aim: To study the effect of body scan meditation on negative and positive affect in patients with alcohol dependence. Method: The present study was conducted on patients with alcohol dependence in Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi. The study samples were collected from 30 in-patients with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) using a self-rating scale. After that the subjects who were randomly assigned to receiving body scan meditation underwent 45 minutes guided meditation and 15 minutes discussion for one week. Subjects assigned to other group did not receive body scan meditation. However, both the groups received pharmacological treatment as usual. After the intervention, subjects in both the groups were revaluated. Results: Patients in experimental group had significantly less severe dependence on alcohol and did not show significant reduction in negative affect and increment in positive affect after one week intervention of body scan meditation. Conclusion: There is no significant reduction in negative and increment in positive affect after receiving one week of body scan meditation intervention in alcohol dependence patients.

This paper traces the diagnostic concepts of alcoholism featured in the major classification systems over the past 40 years. The description of alcoholism as a diagnostic concept has undergone considerable transformation over this time, but an international consensus now exists in the DSM-IIIR [2] criteria and ICD-10 [3]. Alcoholism is equated with alcohol dependence, and both definitions draw largely on the description of the alcohol dependence syndrome by Edwards and Gross [4]. Although the presence of withdrawal symptoms and relief use (key aspects of so-called physical addiction) is part of both systems, they are not necessary to make the diagnosis in either. Future directions and clinical implications of these developments are discussed.

Objectives: Mindfulness-based stress reduction has been proven to improve mental health and quality of life. This study examined how mindfulness training and various types of mindfulness practices altered brain activity. Methods: Specifically, the spectral powers of scalp electroencephalography of the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) group (n=17) who underwent an 8-week MBSR training—including mindful breathing and body-scan—were evaluated and compared with those of the waitlist controls (n=14).Results: Empirical results indicated that the post-intervention effect of MBSR significantly elevated the resting-state beta powers and reduced resting-state delta powers in both practices; such changes were not observed in the waitlist control. Compared with mindful breathing, body-scanning resulted in an overall decline in electroencephalograms (EEG) spectral powers at both delta and low-gamma bands among trained participants. Conclusion: Together with our preliminary data of expert mediators, the aforementioned spectral changes were salient after intervention, but mitigated along with expertise. Additionally, after receiving training, the MBSR group’s mindfulness and emotion regulation levels improved significantly, which were correlated with the EEG spectral changes in the theta, alpha, and low-beta bands. The results supported that MBSR might function as a unique internal processing tool that involves increased vigilant capability and induces alterations similar to other cognitive training.
