In the course of the three years work in the Arctic with ArcticDEM digital elevation models (DEM), the researchers have obtained fundamentally new results on the natural catastrophic transformations of the landscapes of the Yamal Peninsula in the process of powerful gas blowouts and explosions. They have proved the possibility of detecting gas-explosive objects and processes during regional 4D monitoring based on DEM processing, and in the course of the retrospective 4D monitoring, have identified a number of potential gas blowout objects. The authors have identified disadvantages and proved the need for further improvement of the ArcticDEM data. They have built 3D-models of the areas of catastrophic induced gas blowouts during the drilling of exploration wells in the Arctic, including the Kumzhinskoye field. Using an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone DJI Mavic Pro), the researchers carried out aerial photography and built 3D models of a number of gas blowout craters. For the first time in Yamal, they performed an underground aerial photography of the gas blowout crater space C17, indicating the existence of a gas-sat

The coasts of Baydaratskaya Bay are composed by loose frozen sediments. At Yamal Peninsula accumulative coasts are predominant at the site where pipeline crosses the coast, while thermoabrasional coast are prevail at the Ural coast crossing site. Coastal dynamics monitoring on both sites is conducted using field and remote methods starting from the end of 1980s. As a result of construction in the coastal zone the relief morphology was disturbed, both lithodynamics and thermal regime of the permafrost within the areas of several km around the sites where gas pipeline crosses coastline was changed. At Yamal coast massive removal of deposits from the beach and tideflat took place. The morphology of barrier beach, which previously was a natural wave energy dissipater, was disturbed. This promoted inland penetration of storm surges and permafrost degradation under the barrier beach. At Ural coast the topsoil was disrupted by construction trucks, which affected thermal regime of the upper part of permafrost and lead to active layer deepening. Thermoerosion and thermoabrasion processes have activated on coasts, especially at areas with icy sediments, ice wedges and massive ice beds. Construction of cofferdams resulted in overlapping of sediments transit on both coasts and caused sediment deficit on nearby nearshore zone areas. The result of technogenic disturbances was widespread coastal erosion activation, which catastrophic scale is facilitated by climate warming in the Arctic.

Long-term changes in air temperature on the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan in the 20th–21st centuries are considered. The periods of unambiguous changes in the surface air temperature are determined. It is established that the average winter temperature from the 1970s to 2017, increased in the Kazan region by more than 3 °C and the average summer temperature increased by about 2 °C over the same period. The contribution of global scale processes to the variability of the temperature of the Kazan region is shown: it was 37 % in winter, 23 % in summer. The correlation analysis of the anomalies of average annual air temperature in Kazan and the series of air temperature anomalies in each node over the continents, as well as the ocean surface temperature in each coordinate node on Earth for 1880 –2017, was performed. Long-distance communications were detected in the temperature field between Kazan and remote regions of the Earth. It is noted that long-period climate fluctuations in Kazan occur synchronously with fluctuations in the high latitudes of Asia and North America, with fluctuations in ocean surface temperature in the Arctic ocean, with fluctuations in air temperature in the Far East, and with fluctuations in ocean surface temperature in the Southern hemisphere in the Indian and Pacific oceans, as well as air temperature in southern Australia. It is suggested that there is a global mechanism that regulates long-term climate fluctuations throughout the Earth in the considered interval of 200 years of observations. According to the CMIP5 project, climatic scenarios were built for Kazan until the end of the 21st century.

The possibilities of Geothermy as a geophysical method are studied to solve forecast and prospecting problems of Petroleum Geology of the Arctic regions and the Paleozoic of Western Siberia. Deep heat flow of Yamal fields, whose oil and gas potential is associated with the Jurassic-Cretaceous formations, and the fields of Tomsk Region, whose geological section contents deposits in the Paleozoic, is studied. The method of paleotemperature modeling was used to calculate the heat flow density from the base of a sedimentary section (by solving the inverse problem of Geothermy). The schematization and mapping of the heat flow were performed, taking into account experimental determinations of the parameter. Besides, the correlation of heat flow features with the localization of deposits was revealed. The conceptual and factual basis of research includes the tectonosedimentary history of sedimentary cover, the Mesozoic-Cenozoic climatic temperature course and the history of cryogenic processes, as well as lithologic and stratigraphic description of the section, results of well testing, thermometry and vitrinite reflectivity data of 20 deep wells of Yamal and 37 wells of Ostanino group of fields of Tomsk region. It was stated that 80 % of known Yamal deposits correlate with anomalous features of the heat flow. Bovanenkovskoe and Arkticheskoe fields are located in positive anomaly zones. 75 % of fields of Ostanino group relate to anomalous features of the heat flow. It is shown that the fields, which are characterized by existence of commercial deposits in the Paleozoic, are associated with the bright gradient zone of the heat flow. The forecast of commercial inflows in the Paleozoic for Pindzhinskoe, Mirnoe and Rybalnoe fields is given. The correlation between the intensity of naftidogenesis and the lateral inhomogeneity of the deep heat flow is characterized as a probable fundamental pattern for Western Siberia.

This article deals with the ethnographic analysis of the history and social life of electricity among Nenets in the Yamal Peninsula. Based on historical documents and field data the author reconstructs a history of the electrification of the northern part of the peninsula. This work also includes the reflections on social and cultural meanings of electricity among Nenets in and out the tundra. Through these historical and current dynamics, the author suggests analysing the life of electricity in off-the-grid settings through the lens of transnational technological entanglements in the Arctic

Using the example of paleotemperature modeling of the Kiterbyutskaya suite of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic section, opened by a deep well at the Bovanenkovskoye oil – gas condensate field (Yamal Peninsula), the influence of paleoclimate factors on the thermal history of the Lower Jurassic oil source deposits, the duration of the main phase of petroleum formation and the value of the paleothermometric maximum and oil generation density. The original computer methodology is described, which takes into account the parameters of the tectonic and sedimentation history, as well as the history of the thermophysical properties of the sedimentary formation, including permafrost and glaciers, and not requiring a priori information about the values and nature of the deep heat flow is given. The features of the model parametrization are shown. The reliability of the results is confidently controlled by the geophysical criterion of the “discrepancy”, comparison with experimental data on the heat flow, and consistency with the drilling data. The presentation is based on the works of the Tomsk School of Geothermics, carried out as part of the development of a methodological base of geothermics as a geophysical oil prospecting method.

The results of studying the mineralogy of metamorphic schists from the Pre-Jurassic base of the Arctic part of the West Siberian plate are presented. The accessory and ore mineralization of schists from the Zapadno-Yarotinsky license area located in the southern part of the Yamal Peninsula is studied. The schists was uncovered by the Zapadno-Yarotinskaya No. 300 well at a depth of 2762 m. Above the section, the metamorphic rocks are overlain by a young Meso-Cenozoic cover. The schists are mainly composed of quartz, plagioclase (albite), carbonates (dolomite and siderite), mica (muscovite) and chlorite (donbassite). The discovered accessory and ore minerals in the metamorphic schists of the Zapadno-Yarotinsky area can be divided into two groups. The first group includes minerals that were formed during the metamorphism of schists, or were preserved as detrital matter. These minerals include zircon, fluorapatite, and rutile as the most stable compounds. The remaining mineralization (pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, galena, cobaltite, barite, xenotime-(Y), goyazite, synchysite-(Nd), native silver and copper) is clearly secondary and was formed as a result of superimposed metasomatic processes. Judging from the described mineralogy, the schists underwent changes as a result of superimposed propyllitization. The temperature range of this process is determined by the formation of cubanite in association with chalcopyrite at a temperature of 200-210 оС.
