Purpose Covid-19 has prompted higher institutions around the globe to relocate traditional classes to online classes. Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) was no exception. It had already drawn up limited strategies regarding distance education, but those Web-based platforms were provided only to students with special needs. Due to the pandemic, all ELTE students were compelled to use online platforms that the university provided, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, to resume their studies. This study aims to evaluate the initial experience of students in using these new platforms. It also explores the effects distance learning has on students’ satisfaction and attitudes toward their education. Design/methodology/approach By using a quantitative approach, students’ attitudes toward e-learning and their access to tech-platforms, use of those platforms and satisfaction with online courses are processed and analyzed via a statistical package for the social sciences. Findings The results of this study show that distance learning is still in the development stage, and although traditional classrooms appeared to be indispensable, the positive attitudes and willingness of the majority of students to engage in distance learning classes in the post-COVID19 pandemic indicate that there is an immense potential future for e-learning platforms in higher education institutions. Originality/value The distance learning approach has been the only way for institutions worldwide to resume studies during the pandemic of Covid-19. Students faced mixed feelings of perplexity, loneliness, uncertainty over what is going to happen with classes, exams, graduation and other significant activities impacting their study path; irrespective of their daily struggles with the hard accessibility to means of e-learning and personal potential health problems. This evaluation is considered as a roadmap for institutions to follow-up and to improve the organizational and educational shortcomings they met.

Background. E-learning is a new paradigm of modern teaching methods. The aim of the paper was to reveal the university students’ attitudes towards e-learning. Methods. Research sample involved undergraduate (first cycle) and postgraduate (second cycle) students of three different universities, 156 men and 278 women. Questionnaire was comprised of 60 questions and statements. Results. Research reveals that 40% of undergraduates and 42% of postgraduates positively treat e-learning as the method of study content presentation; 23% of undergraduate and 38% postgraduate students believe that study content presented in e-learning environment helps them focus attention; 61% of the undergraduates and 59% of postgraduate students claim that materials accessible in e-learning environment are relevant to their studies. Even 37% of undergraduates and 34% of postgraduates are completely satisfied with their study results achieved by studying materials presented in e-learning environment. Attitudes of male and female students and students from different universities differ significantly (p < .05). About 40% of undergraduate and 36% of postgraduate students believe that studying via e-learning is easier than studying based on traditional methods, 48% and 44% respectively think that it is harder. The majority, i.e. 59% of undergraduates and 52% of postgraduates, prefer blended learning methods. About 42% of first cycle students and 43% of second cycle students disagree or partly disagree with the claim that studies via e-learning and studies based on traditional methods do not differ in respect of their quality; 38% of undergraduate and 42% of postgraduate students believe that e-learning and traditional methods lead to the acquisition of the same competences. Students who have part-time jobs and students who have full-time jobs have significantly different (p < .05) attitudes towards competences acquired via e-learning and via traditional methods. The opinion that the same competences are acquired via e-learning and via traditional methods is more common among full-time workers. Students (45% of undergraduates and 37% of postgraduates) tend to believe that in the e-learning environment studies were organized as professionally, qualitatively and effectively as studies based on traditional methods. This view is opposed by 22% of undergraduate and 30% of postgraduate students. Conclusions. Students treat traditional (“live”) lectures more favourably than autonomous studies in the e-learning environment. They tend to believe that the blended learning method is the most acceptable. Male students’ and female students’ attitudes towards study results in the e-learning environment differ significantly. The majority believe that competences acquired via e-learning and the ones acquired via traditional methods do not differ.

Based upon the perspective of social cognitive theory, this study develops a conceptual framework that examines the antecedents of technical-vocational university students’ active participation and learning effectiveness of English proficiency development in a blended e-learning (BEL) environment. A BEL system was employed to support technical-vocational university students’ English proficiency development. The research model is tested using a questionnaire survey of 298 participants. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the reliability and validity of the measurements. The partial least squares method was used to validate the measurement and hypotheses. The empirical results indicate that e-learning self-efficacy, social influence and BEL system characteristics are the primary antecedents of students’ active participation in a BEL environment. The results also show that e-learning self-efficacy, student active participation and BEL system characteristics saliently affect technical-vocational university students’ learning effectiveness of English proficiency development. The findings signify that technical-vocational university students show positive incline towards the active participation in BEL for English as a foreign language (EFL) courses and exposed a possible benefit of English proficiency development from its use in the long run. The results can not only proffer instrumental suggestions for the critical research issue of e-learning, but also may serve as instrumental guidelines for a BEL environment to be effective implemented with care to avoid the risk to weaken student’s interests and activations in English proficiency development in BEL.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused educational institutions all over the world to migrate their teachings online. Since Indonesian government issued the SK Mendiknas No. 107/U/2001, educational institutions had to steadily integrate their learning process with technology. So, this study intends to investigate the effectiveness of using the open-source learning platforms known as Moodle in a selected university, Universitas Lancang Kuning (Unilak) in Indonesia. While multiple courses uses Moodle, this study selected to analyse the 2017/2018 fifth semester students as they are the ones who pioneered Moodle for other classes to use. With a quasi-experimental research design, this study used four types of test to calculate the results of the essay pre-test and post-test on both experimental and control classes. With the eventual mean of 65.53 for the experimental class and 63.25 for the control, this study proved that Moodle does effectively improve Indonesian university EFL students’ learning compared to conventional lecture-style learning. Future research is hoped to extend or compare this study with an investigation on how university EFL students are using e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors that have not been covered in this empirical study.
