ABSTRACT This document made an analysis on what knowledge students of fifth, sixth and seventh year of Basic Education School called “Líderes del Futuro”, located in Valencia Canton, Los Ríos Province, have on cultural identity. Valencia is one of the most vibrant Ecuadorian cities, known as "La Flor de Los Ríos”. This research used a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach to determine through questionnaires the responses of 9 teachers and 30 students on what students know about their Canton, what they know of its history, its customs and its traditions. In addition, an interview with a staff member of the department of culture of the I. Municipality of Valencia was conducted; his answer was confronted with the data provided by teachers and students. The analysis of the data showed that while students and teachers know the main aspects of the Canton, still needed to clarify this statement as indicated by the municipal official to enhance traditions and values that strengthen the cultural identity. Finally, it was concluded that there should be greater dissemination campaign of the projects that I. Municipality hosts to rescue, to study, and to promote the more authentic and original cultural values of the locality; respecting the past generations as a fundamental pillar of the new generations; and to preserve the historical memory by fostering a sense of belonging; and highlight the pride of being who students of “Líderes del Futuro”’ school are and where they are going to.

Identity construction is one of the fundamental human needs. The process takes place in two areas simultaneously: internal, self-reflexive and external, associated with a sense of belonging to a particular group. The Jews, until the beginning of the nineteenth century constituted quite uniform society voluntarily separating themselves from other communities. As a result of emancipation and assimilation processes, various influences affect their identity. As a consequence the Jews faced two difficulties. The first one was the dilemma between own nation and territorial homeland while the other was the progressing deep internal divisions. At present Jewish identity is most of all national and ethnical identity strongly reinforced by historical memory and fight with anti-Semitism. After the period of the twentieth century crisis and in the light of the western world secularization it has become also cultural identity.Identity construction is one of the fundamental human needs. A passport is an identity given to an individual by his country, to travel to other countries. With globalisation, ‘passports’ that were papers stamped at the entrance and exit by customs during the past centuries have increasingly become critical documents. It is not only a personal document, but it also represents the country to which it belongs. The designs should reflect the cultural identity of a nation, in the form of visual elements, illustrations and photographs. Countries that are aware that their passports reflect their cultural values are able to combine their passport designs with the modern design concept of the times creatively and stylishly, as an artistic work. This qualitative study is aimed at evaluating passport designs in terms of being a representative of a cultural identity and examining passport designs that are re-examined with innovative and modern understanding cultural identity. Keywords: Passport design, cultural identity, graphic design.

According to the Curriculum Guidelines of Biology of Basic Education "school should encourage the pedagogical practice based on different methodologies, valuing the teaching concepts, the learning (internalization) and the evaluation that allow teachers and students being aware of the need for emancipatory transformation”.  The teaching of biochemistry and its contents in basic education are not discussed as a structuring content within the Biology subject, but are included in related content such as cellular biology. The objective of this study was to inventory the contents and methodologies related to biochemistry taught by teachers of basic education and produce teaching-learning materials as contribution to these contents from the inventory results. The methodology was developed from the analysis of the questionnaires applied to biology teachers from public schools of Guarapuava-Pr. The results showed that the teaching of biochemistry and biology discipline, although it comes from the same area, are designed as two unattached areas, meaning there is no perception by teachers in relation to the implicit conceptual intercept in teaching Biology and Biochemistry. To this end, the profile of the game Grow was adapted using themes related to Biochemistry. The game consists of 45 cards and a game board with a track. The player who gives more write answers to the questions reaches the end and wins the match. For game evaluation participants answered a questionnaire at the end of the activity. Most of the participants argued that the process has contributed to ensure the assimilation of the contents, since it is a leisure activity with effective participation of students. Thus, the obtained data confirmed the assumption of  Pedroso (2009), which states that the games allow a significant teacher-student interaction, disseminating scientific knowledge from the views and experiences of the student.

In this paper we will discuss about how Galician writers deal with elements of character identity in their young adult novels. At first we will study novels containing epic and mythological elements and then we will deal with novels focused on the recovery of historical memory. All writers fit in paradigmatic identity systems and seek youth reflection on cultural identity both individual and collective.

Difficult Settlement with the Soviet Past (on the Example of the Description of the Katyn Massacre in Russian History Textbooks)The aim of the article is to show how in contemporary Russian history textbooks the Katyn Massacre (1940) is presented and compare its interpretation with different approaches to this tragedy that are actively discussed in scientific circles and among ordinary Russians. This approach should answer the question of the place occupied by this sensitive issue in Russian politics of memory and show how the process of forming historical memory related to the Katyn Massacre, based on historical education in schools, and public policy, looks like. Civic education in Russia is based on patriotic values and shapes the pride of power of the motherland. By emphasizing the importance of war victories, strong leaders, the formation of the students’ sense of belonging to the Russian nation and loyalty to the state takes place. The Katyn case continues to be a painful theme in Russian interpretation of the past, which explains why attempts are made to justify the crimes of the Stalinist regime. It is also not useful for patriotic education, as evidenced by the lack of mention of it in some history textbooks, or attempts to justify it partially.

With such recognition as a starting point, the goal is to contribute to the formation of a cultural identity in a national or a regional scale through the management of the above-mentioned heritage. This identity would fit into the ideals of the insitutions or communities that legitimize such recognition. Nevertheless, in a local or domestic level, even though users of this heritage can recognize such values in an architectural object, these very users tend to attribute to that same object, in a scale of informal character, qualities that relate to a level of more intimate meaning. The following essay presents the contemporary academic discussion around the concept of heritage, and the different values it acquires among groups of formal actors –institutions and professionals from the field– and citizens. As well, it shows the tensions and dichotomies that the nature of built heritage itself produces among those who are related to it.KEYWORDSbuilt heritage, cultural values, cultural resource

This article examines the relationship between popular music, memory and cultural identity. It draws upon narrative approaches to memory and identity in order to explore how engagement with music from the past can both afford and constrain identity construction. On the basis of in-depth interviews with, among others, heritage practitioners and audience members, I discuss how practices in the cultural and heritage industries affect the way in which popular music’s past is narrated. Although those narratives offer a sense of belonging and identity through their connection to experiences of time and place, there are also factors that compromise this potential. The article discusses limits to the accuracy of memories and impediments to representations of local diversity. Furthermore, I argue that copyright regulation affects which stories about popular music’s past can be told.

Developing the problem of the formation and representation of the past, the mechanisms of memory transformation of past events both in individual and collective consciousness, modern researchers are paying more and more attention to the materials of oral history. The article analyzes the importance of oral history materials and documents of personal origin in the study of the Great Patriotic War history. The author believes that proactive documentation is an indispensable source for writing history in the “human dimension” and an excellent opportunity to commemorate memorable events of the war. Reflecting the individuality of storytellers, their cultural values and world outlook / worldview, as well as specific historical conditions that have formed individual views of the world, oral history materials demonstrate images and phenomena of the past that have become socially significant for certain generations, and carry factual and evaluative information. Through indepth interviews with the participants of the events, the researcher actualizes personally significant and socially important memories, transforming them into cultural and historical values. Considering the potential of these sources, the author identifies the main plotlines and themes that resonate with military issues; draws attention to the fact that they illustrate in detail the private world of a person. Due to natural departure of the Great Patriotic War eyewitnesses and contemporaries after the era, the author pays special attention to the accumulation and publication of memoirs that makes it possible to preserve the depth of historical memory horizons. Despite the common and different aspects in the structure and content of the constructed ideas about the war, she concludes that all materials of oral history are an important contribution to the preservation of the collective memory of the nation.

AbstractThe present paper is involved with the Pedagogical faculties’ students’ critique on the current educational system as it has been altered after 1981. The research was carried out utilizing both quantitative and qualitative tools. Students-voters participated in the interviews whereas active voters were difficult to be located to meet the research requirements. The dynamics of the specific political party is based on a popular profile in terms of standpoints related to economic, social and political issues. The research findings depict the students’ strong wish for a change of the curricula and a turn towards History and Religion as well as an elevation of the Greek historic events, as the History books that have been written and taught at schools over the past years contributed to the downgrading of the Greek national and cultural identity. There is also a students’ strong belief that globalization and the immigrants’ presence in Greece have functioned in a negative way against the Greek ideal. Therefore, an overall change of the educational content could open the path towards the reconstruction of the moral values and the Greek national identity.
