The present study is to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of methanolic extract of unripe fruits of Musa Sapientum Linn. and the fresh juice of the fruits of Emblica Officinalis Gaertn in Wistar rats. The methanolic extract unripened fruits of Musa Sapientum Linn.  and the fresh juice of the fruits of Emblica Officinalis Gaertn were combined and evaluated for the gastroprotective activity by ethanol-induced model and indomethacin-induced model in rats at a dose of 25mg/kg (p.o) and 50mg/kg (p.o) respectively. Biochemical parameters like ulcer index, the volume of gastric juice, pH of gastric juice, free acidity and total acidity were studied. The unripe fruits of Musa and the fresh juice of Embilica will contain flavonoids, flavones, abscisic acid which shows a significant reduction in gastric volume, pH, free acidity, total acidity and ulcer index at the doses of 25mg/kg (p.o) and 50mg/kg (p.o). The results show that the unripe fruits 0f Musa Sapientum Linn. and fresh juice from the fruits of Emblica Officinalis Gaertn will combinedly possess greater antiulcer activity than that of the individual drugs.

Peptic ulcer is a condition which results from an imbalance between offensive and defensive factors of gastrointestinal system. The investigation was designed to evaluate the antiulcer activity of Symplocos racemosa whole plant methanol extract (MESR) in rat model of indomethacininduced gastric ulceration. The total acidity, gastric volume, pH and free acidity were measured to determine the anti-ulcer activity of MESR. Pretreatment with MESR (125-500 mg/kg) markedly reduced the indomethacin-induced increase in gastric ulcer index and score. These results revealed that antisecretory effects MESR were responsible for antiulcer activity of MESR.

Background: Gastric ulcer is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders, which affects approximately 5-10% of people during their life. In recent years, abundant work has been carried out on herbal medicine to clarify their potential efficacy in gastric ulcer prevention or management. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antiulcer activity of the methanolic root extract of Berberis lycium in albino rats. Method: The methanolic root extract of Berberis lycium was prepared by hot extraction method. Anti-ulcer activity was evaluated and method employed was pylorus ligation and ethanol induced in albino rats. Preliminary methanolic extract of Berberis lycium was subjected to the acute oral toxicity study according to the OECD guideline no. 425. Animals were divided into four groups of six animals each. The animals of Group I served as normal control (vehicle) which received distilled water. Group II and III received 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of methanolic root extract, respectively. In pylorus ligation induced ulcer model, various parameters were studied viz. gastric volume, pH, total acidity, free acidity, and ulcer index. Ulcer index and percentage inhibition of ulceration was determined for ethanol induced ulcer model. Group IV received Ranitidine at 50 mg/kg was used as the standard drug. Pretreatment of methanol root extract of Berberis lycium showed significant (P˂0.05) decrease in the gastric volume, total acidity and free acidity. However, pH of the gastric juice was significantly increased only at higher dose 500 mg/kg. It showed also significant (P˂0.05) decrease in number of ulcers and ulcer score index in pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulceration models. Results: The methanol root extract of Berberis lycium showed a significant reduction in the total acidity, free acidity and acid volume. The efficacy of plant extract at high dose was comparable with the standard drug Ranitidine. Conclusion: Our study results support the ethnomedical use of root of Berberis lycium. Background: To evaluate the antiulcer activity of ethanolic leaves extract of Saraca indica against ethanol, pylorus ligature and indomethacin in albino rats. Materials and Methods: Ulcer was produced by ethanol, pylorus ligature and indomethacin in albino rats. Five groups (n=6) of rats were orally pre-treated with carboxymethyl cellulose solution, and ranitidine (80 mg/kg) respectively. In ethanol induced ulcer, the animals were treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica in 0.3% CMC solution, 60 minutes before oral administration of absolute ethanol to produce gastric mucosal injury. In indomethacin induced ulcer, the drug was administered orally at the dose of 30 mg/kg b.w. After 7-9 hours of administration of indomethacin (30 mg/kg); the animals were sacrificed with high doses of anesthesia. In the pylorus ligature method, volume of free acidity, gastric secretion, pH and total acidity were estimated. In all three models, the ulcer index and % protection were estimated. Results: The anti ulcer activity of ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica in ethanol, indomethacin and pylorus ligature models is evident from the significant (P<0.001) reduction in ulcer index. In pylorus ligature model, significant (P<0.001) reduction in total acidity gastric volume and increase in pH were observed when compared with the standard drug. Conclusion: Ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica were found to be significantly protective against ethanol, indomethacin and pylorus ligature induced gastric ulcers in the experimental albino rats. The result obtained suggest that ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica possesses significant anti-ulcer activity.

Background:Herbal products are finding increasing demand in the treatment of Peptic ulcer, on account of their better safety and efficacy.Objectives:To evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of ethanolic extract of seeds of Vitis Vinifera in Wistar albino rats.Methods:The ethanolic extract of Vitis Vinifera was investigated for its anti-ulcer activity in rats against HCl – Ethanol induced ulcer model. The antiulcer activity was assessed by determining and comparing gastric volume, pH, free and total acidity; ulcer number and its inhibition, ulcer severity and ulcer index.Results:A significant antiulcer activity was observed. The grape seed 100mg/kg group showed significant [p < 0.05] reduction in ulcer number 30.00 ± 3.23 as compared to the control. The grape seed 200mg/kg showed significant [p < 0.05] reduction in ulcer number 27.33 ± 2.97, free acidity 20.00 ± 2.26, and gastric lesion18.00 ± 2.96 as compared to the control.Conclusion:This present study indicates that Vitis vinifera seed extract has potential anti ulcer activity in the model tested. Keywords: Vitis vinifera, Anti-ulcer, Ethanol, Free acidity, Total acidity

Background: Launaea aspleniifolia Hook (Family Asteraceae) is used traditionally in medicine in Indian system for the treatment of leucoderma. This study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective and antiulcer effects using the methanolic extract of Launaea aspleniifolia Hook (MELA). Methods: The MELA in the dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) was administered orally, daily for 7 days to prevent the acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity and peptic ulcer. In order to determine the antioxidant enzymes activity, various enzymatic parameters including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBL), direct bilirubin (DBL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), high density lipoproteins (HDL), random glucose test (RBS), serum creatinine levels (SCL) and direct bilirubin (DBL) were determined. Further, the histopathology of tissue and various gastric secretion parameters like free acidity, total acidity ulcer score, % ulcer inhibition, gastric volume, pH, Na+ and K+ and histopathology were determined in PLinduced ulcer model. Results: MELA showed dose-dependent hepatoprotective and ulcer protective effect in acetaminopheninduced hepatotoxicity and antiulcer activity. Furthermore, tissue antioxidant parameter such as reduced Malondialdehyde (MDA), histopathology was also investigated. MELA was more potent in controlling all the serological parameter of liver like ALT, AST, TBL, DBL, ALP, HDL, RBS, SCL, TP and ALB in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05) induced by Acetaminophen. Apart from this, antiulcer activity MELA was confirmed by the low level of ulcer index along with the reduction of free acidity, total acidity ulcer score, % ulcer inhibition, gastric volume, Na+ and an increase K+, pH of gastric content in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05) induced PL model. Conclusion: The results indicated a significant dose-dependent effect of MELA from injuries induced in liver and stomach. These protective effects of MELA can be examined in various other toxicities as alone and in combinations.

Background: Agomelatine is a synthetic analogue of melatonin and a potent agonist of melatonin receptors. Agomelatine has Hepatoprotective as well as antioxidant activity. The aim of study was to evaluate the antiulcer activity of Agomelatine and its potentiation through the pyridoxine on ethanol induced gastric ulcer in rats.Methods: Thirty number of rats were divided in to five groups contro, standard, Agomelatine low dose, Agomelatine high dose and Agomelatine with Pyridoxine groups. Ethanol was used to induced gastric ulcer in rats. ulcer index and also the other biochemical parameters like free Acidity, total Acidity, gastric pH, volume of gastric juice was determined. Statistically analysis was done by ANOVA P value less than 0.05 was considered Statistically significant.Results: In the present study, an attempt has been made to investigate the gastric antisecretory, antiulcer and cytoprotective properties of agomelatine. The results are statistically significant by ANOVA test. Ranitidine showed a statistically significant decrease in the volume of gastric juice by free acidity and total acidity. when compared to control. Agomelatine shows a showed similar response to the volume of gastric juice. A significant difference in pH was observed between the agomelatine-treated, agomelatine with pyridoxine treated group and the control groups.Conclusions: Pretreated rats with Agomelatine (40mg/kg) showed protective effect against ethanol induce gastric ulcer. Agomelatine (40mg/kg) showed the ameliorative effect with Pyridoxine (0.3mg/kg), on gastric ulcer.

Annona reticulate (AR) is indigenous to the tropical areas of India and worldwide. The use of plant as remedy for diarrhea and ulcer is well documented in Ayurvedic system of medicine. However, pharmacological evidence does not exist to substantiate its therapeutic efficacy for the same. The aim was to investigate the antiulcer and anti-diarrheal activity of methanolic (ME) and aqueous extracts (AE) of A. reticulate in animal model. The antiulcer activity of extracts was investigated using ethanol and pylorus ligation-induced ulcer. The anti-diarrheal activity of MEAR and AEAR extracts was evaluated by castor oil induced diarrhea and gastro intestinal motility using parameters such as onset of diarrhea, number of wet stools, total number of stool and weight of total number of stools. The antiulcer activity of the extracts was confirmed by a reduction in ulcer index along with the decrease in gastric volume, total acidity, and an increase in pH of gastric content in both the models. A. reticulate extracts were more efficacious in reducing number of total stools in both the models of diarrhea and showed a dose-dependent antidiarrheal effect. The obtained results have established a pharmacological evidence for the folkloric use of the A. reticulate as antiulcer and antidiarrhoeal agent.

Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate the role of curcumin in osteoarthritis when it is used as an adjuvant to diclofenac sodium.Methods: Osteoarthritis (OA) was induced by administering nalidixic acid 400 mg/kg. Animals (Female rats) were divided into 5 groups each containing 6 animals. Group I was considered as control, group II in which the animals were induced with osteoarthritis with nalidixic acid and were given no treatment. Group III in which osteoarthritis induced animals were treated with diclofenac sodium by the oral route. Group IV osteoarthritis induced animals were treated with the combination of diclofenac sodium and curcumin and group V animals were pre-treated with curcumin and then induced with osteoarthritis. Parameters like ulcer area, ulcer index, free acidity, total acidity, the volume of gastric juice were estimated. Histopathological studies were also carried out.Results: The data of our study shows that nalidixic acid has not shown much effect on the gastric parameters in group II animals. The ulcer index, free acidity, total acidity and gastric juice volume were increased significantly (p<0.001) in group III and decreased in group IV animals (p<0.05) when compared to group I control animals. Group V animals pretreated with curcumin have shown fewer incidences of gastric ulcers and other ulcerative parameters non significantly. Histopathology also suggests a low incidence of ulcers in group IV and group V.Conclusion: It demonstrates that curcumin when used along with the conventional NSAIDs as an adjuvant therapy, has a role in treating osteoarthritis effectively.

Lagerstroemia indica, is a natural plant which have traditional use from the ancient medicine for the treatment of many diseases. The gastroprotective effect of methanolic extract of Lagerstroemia indica and the possible mechanisms used to investigated the ulcer activity through indomethacin-induced ulcer model. Method: male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: (normal control, n=6), (standard omeprazole group, n=6) and (extract group, n=6). Each of control, omeprazole and extract were administered orally to the rats daily for 21 days before the induction of ulcer with the help of indomethacin. On the 21 days indomethacin was administered with single oral dose (20mg/kg). Four hours later after the administration of indomethacin dose treatment, the rats were sacrificed and gastric tissue was taken for histopathological investigation for the calculation of pH, ulcer inhibition, ulcer index. The observation significantly increased (p < 0.01) value that reduced the ulcer by the treatment with Lagerstroemia indica. Result: The result indicates the antiulcer effect of the Lagerstroemia indica extracts showed significant effect during comparision with control and standard group. The data of study revealed that the extracts of Lagerstroemia indica proved to show control over the model of indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration which gives potent activity against ulceration.

Background: Beta vulgaris (chenopodiacea) is a plant reported for its variety of ethnic medicinal uses. Hence we have planned to screen anti ulcer activity of root of the plant with the alcoholic extract. Root powders successively extracted with alcohol and were subjected for phytochemical screening to identify different phytoconstituents.Methods: Anti ulcer activity was evaluated in various animal models like pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulcer models in rats.Results: Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, polyphenols. No mortality was observed with root extract up to maximum dose level of 4g/kg. Further alcoholic extract of 200 and 400mg/ kg / p.o significantly (p˂0.01) reduced the ulcer score, ulcer number, ulcer index, free acidity and total acidity in pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulcer models in rats.Conclusions: The present study revealed that the root extract of Beta vulgaris has antiulcer activity.
