Background: Alginate impression material is the irreversible hydrocolloid material that is widely used in dentistry. The contact time between alginate and gypsum cast could have a detrimental effect on the properties of the gypsum cast. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of various contact time intervals of Alginate impressions & type III dental stone on surface properties of stone cast. Materials and Methods: Time intervals tested were 1hour, 6 hours and 9 hours. Surface properties of stone cast evaluated were surface detail reproduction, hardness and roughness. Surface detail reproduction was determined using cylindrical brass test block in accordance with ISO 1563. Surface roughness was measured by profilometer and hardness was measured by Durometer (Shore D). Results: The detail reproduction showed significant difference (P<0.05), at 6 hr., and 9 hr. showed better results. While surface roughness significantly decreased (p<0.01) with prolonged contact time. However, surface hardness increased significantly (p<0.01) with increased contact time. Conclusions: Surface detail reproduction increased with increasing the contact time and this was noticed at (6, 9 hours). However, 1hour time interval showed decreased surface detailed reproduction. Roughness decreased when the contact time was increased between type III dental stone and alginate impression whereas, hardness was improved significantly with increasing contact time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties of orthodontic resins with and without fluoride. Forty disks, measuring 2 mm thick by 6 mm in diameter, were made of 4 bracket-bonding composite resins (n=10): Transbond Plus Color Change-3M/Unitek (TPCC); Transbond XT- 3M/Unitek (TXT), Orthocem -FGM (OC); Orthocem UV Trace-FGM (OCUV). The discs were photoactivated for 40 seconds with irradiance of 450 mW/cm2 and manually polished in sequence by silicon carbide sandpapers with 1200 and 2000 grain size and finished with diamond paste and felt disc. The surface microhardness analysis was performed using a Shimadzu Micro Hardness Tester HMV-2,000 (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) with a load of 50 gF and a 5 second penetration time. Surface roughness readings were taken using a Surf Corder Roughness Meter (SE 1700- Kosaka, Lisboa-Portugal). For data analysis, ANOVA (one-way) was used, followed by Tukey's post-test (?=0.05). The microhardness results showed a difference (p?0.05) in the means of the orthodontic resins between TPCC and TXT with the other groups. After the surface roughness analysis, the averages showed that TPCC resin showed higher roughness compared to OC and OCUV (p?0.05), and there was no statistical difference with TXT. It was concluded that statistically the composite resins with fluoride showed significant difference regarding hardness and roughness.

Introduction: Pathogens, such as cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and human immunodeficiency virus are transmitted, threatening the health of dental laboratory workers, especially as a result of saliva and blood contact of patients. To prevent cross-infection, impression materials should be disinfected at the end of the impression process in the mouth. Aim: To study the effect of application time of sodium hypochlorite and quaternary ammonium-based disinfectant solution on the surface roughness of an elastomeric impression material. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro study done during March 2020, 10 disc-shaped samples were used in each group, with a total of 110 samples obtained from a light body elastomeric impression material with dimensions of 15×3 mm. The samples were kept in a sodium hypochlorite solution (Wizard; Rehber Kimya, Istanbul, Turkey) at concentrations of 1% and 5% for 1, 5, 10, and 30 minutes and in a quaternary ammonium-based disinfectant (Zeta 7 Solution, Zhermack SpA, Italy) for 10 and 30 minutes. Surface roughness measurements were taken with a profilometer device. The data obtained were statistically analysed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Wilcoxon signed rank test for dependent/paired groups for the continuous data. The significance level was set to α=0.05. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the control group and the 1% sodium hypochlorite (30 min p-value 0.037), and 5% sodium hypochlorite (30 min p-value 0.017). The statistical evaluation of the surface roughness of the samples with different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite and the same times was done and found statistically significant at 30 mins, p-value 0.021. Conclusion: The prolonged application of the sodium hypochlorite disinfectant at 1% and 5% concentrations caused a significant increase in the light body elastomeric impression material’s surface roughness

Propolis is a potent anti-microbial and natural anti-inflammatory by-product obtained from the beehive. Studies have demonstrated the superior biocompatibility and anti-microbial properties of propolis as compared to calcium hydroxide. However, its effect on postoperative endodontic pain is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of Chinese propolis paste as an intracanal medicament on postoperative endodontic pain intensities compared with calcium hydroxide (control) at different time intervals in necrotic teeth with periapical radiolucency. Eighty patients with single-rooted necrotic teeth with visible periapical radiolucency were recruited and randomly allocated to either the calcium hydroxide or propolis groups. After chemo-mechanical preparation and intracanal medicament insertion, patients were given the VAS (visual analogue scale) to record pain scores. Inter-group data were compared and analyzed using two-way repeated measure ANOVA (Bonferroni test). A p-value of < 0.025 was considered significant. In total, >78% of the patients experienced no or only mild post-operative pain in both the groups at all time intervals, without any significant difference in pain scores between the two groups (p > 0.025). An overall flare-up rate of 14.8% was found. The results suggest that either of these medicaments can be used as an inter-appointment medication for the prevention of postoperative pain in necrotic cases.

Background: Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) techniques have lately become a popular treatment option for complete dentures fabrication. The two principal CAD-CAM techniques milling and 3D printing used in complete dentures construction have been approved and documented in showing clinically good results. Surface characteristics of dentures fabricated by these new techniques have a great effect on microbiological adherence to denture fitting surfaces. Aim: As other clinical trials and/or in-vitro studies evaluating the microbiological effect and its correlation with the surface roughness of the two advanced manufacturing techniques and comparing it with the conventional technique are lacking. Thus, this study aimed to further assess the microbiological and surface properties of different widely used denture base materials. Methodology: Thirty-six completely edentulous patients were selected and divided randomly into three groups Group I patients received conventional complete denture, Group II patients received CAD/CAM milled complete dentures and Group III patients received 3D printed complete dentures. All denture`s surface roughness were evaluated, also all patients were recalled after 3, 9 & 12 months respectively to evaluate the microbiological adherence. Results: Microbiological count significantly increased (P < 0.05) after 12 months in all groups, after 12 months there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between three groups as group II (Milled) was significantly the lowest, then the group I (conventional), while group III (3D printed) was significantly the highest. Regarding surface roughness of group II (milled) was significantly the lowest, while group III (3D printed) was significantly the highest. Finally, there was a strong positive significant correlation between microbiological adherence and surface roughness in all groups as (r > 0.5). Conclusion: Group II (Milled) appeared to be the best regarding microbiological adherence and surface roughness followed by the group I (conventional) and finally group III (3D printed). Furthermore, it was evident that surface roughness has a great effect on microbiological adherence regardless of the fabrication technique utilized.

Background and Aim: For miscellaneous purposes, the prosthodontists and dental laboratory technicians usually attempt repeated pouring of the impression in order to avoid expenses and curb upon the chair-side time. There are numerous factors which can affect dimensions of subsequent casts on repeated pouring. These include the process of polymerization, temperature and the material used to fabricate the replica of working cast. The sole aim of this study was to evaluate if repeated pouring of addition silicone impression would influence the dimensional accuracy of resultant casts. Materials & Methods: Addition silicone impression material along with tray adhesive were used to evaluate the influence of repeat pours on the dimensional accuracy of resultant casts at various time intervals i.e. at 15 minutes, 75 minutes, 24 hours and 7 days. Vision measurement machine was used for measurement of dimensions. A metal control model of 8*6*2 cm was made with abutments. Various dimensional markings and measurements (for inter-abutment distance & intra-abutment distance) were completed. All 80 resultant casts were along with the master model was dimensionally evaluated with “Vision Measurement Machine”. Statistical Analysis and Results: Statistical analysis was completed by SPSS (statistical package for social sciences) version 21.0 and Epi-info version 3.0. The result of this study showed that working dies obtained from Addition silicone at various time intervals i.e. 15 minutes, 75 minutes, 24 hours and 7 days exhibited insignificant dimension changes clinically. The p-value was taken significant when less than 0.05 (p<0.05) and Confidence interval of 95% was taken. Post-Hoc Bonferroni test showed no significant difference for the inter-interval comparison of mean inter-abutment distance (Line 2-3). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study authors concluded that the addition silicone impression material could be preferred material in the field of prosthodontics for repeated pouring up-to 7 days due to its favorable qualities like dimensional accuracy and stability, elastic recovery from undercuts, low creep and moderate to high tear resistance.

This in vitro study investigated the impact of various dentifrices on the shade, translucency, gloss, and surface characteristics of polishing- or glazing-finished monolithic zirconia surfaces after simulated toothbrushing. Eighty square-shaped monolithic zirconia specimens were divided into two major groups based on the finishing methods—polished (P) and glazed (G). Next, specimens from the two major groups were categorized into four subgroups: stored in distilled water (DW, control); brushed with a fluoride-free conventional dentifrice (C); brushed with a fluoride dentifrice (F); and brushed with a whitening dentifrice (W). Overall, eight groups were created—PDW, PC, PF, PW, GDW, GC, GF, and GW (n = 10 each). Shade, translucency, surface gloss, surface roughness, crystalline phase, and superficial topography data were obtained. Repeated-measures ANOVA and two-way ANOVA were used for intergroup comparison (all α = 0.05). The color differences (ΔE00) between pre- and posttreatment were 0.3158 (PDW), 0.7164 (PC), 0.7498 (PF), 0.8106 (PW), 0.1953 (GDW), 0.301 (GC), 0.3051 (GF), and 0.4846 (GW). A statistically significant difference was observed among the ΔE00, surface gloss, and surface roughness of monolithic zirconia. Thus, brushing with several dentifrices markedly affects the optical properties and surface characteristics of monolithic zirconia finished with polishing or glazing methods.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a rugosidade superficial de resinas compostas à base silorano e metacrilato submetidas a diferentes técnicas de acabamento/polimento. Foram preparadas 12 amostras de disco de cada resina composta: P90®, Z350® e Carisma, divididas em 12 grupos de acordo com a técnica de acabamento / polimento: sem acabamento / polimento (controle); acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF; acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF associada a Enhance / Pogo; acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF associada a Enhance / Pogo / Polishing / Pastas Poli I e II / Fotogloss. Após as leituras iniciais da rugosidade da superfície, os espécimes foram submetidos a ciclos mecânicos (1.200.000 ciclos) e submetidos imediatamente a leituras de rugosidade final. As medias de rugosidade superfícial foram analisadas estatisticamente por ANOVA e teste de Tukey-Kramer (α = 0,05). As imagens de MEV foram realizadas após o acabamento / polimento e após a ciclagem mecânica. O compósito P90 mostrou valores de rugosidade superficial semelhantes a outros compósitos investigados. Tough, mostrou diferença significativa nas técnicas de acabamento / polimento. O grupo de pontas damantadas apresentou maior rugosidade superficial que diferiu das outras resinas compostas (α <0,05). Enance / Pogo mostrou os menores resultados, que não apresentaram diferença em relação ao grupo de pasta de polimento (α> 0,05). O material restaurador posterior de baixa contração apresentou rugosidade superficial semelhante quando comparado as resinas compostas de dimetacrilato e são restaurações adequadas para região posterior.Palavras-chave: Dente. Resinas de Silorano.  Propriedades de Superfície. AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of a silorane and methacrylate-based composite resins subjected to different finishing/polishing techniques. Twelve disk specimens were prepared from each composite resin: P90®, Z350® and Charisma, divided into 12 groups according to the finishing/polishing technique: no finishing/polishing (control); finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs; finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs associated to Enhance/Pogo; finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs associated to Enhance/Pogo/Polishing/Poli I and II pastes/Fotogloss. After initial readouts of surface roughness, the specimens were subjected to mechanical cycling (1.200.000 cycles) and immediately subjected to final roughness readouts.  Surface roughness means was statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (α=0.05). SEM images were realized after finishing/polishing and after mechanical cycling. The P90 composite showed surface roughness values similar to other investigated composites. However, significant difference was observed in finishing/polishing techniques. The diamond burs group showed the highest surface roughness differing from the other composite resins (α < 0.05). Enance/Pogo showed the lowest results, which presented no difference compared to the polishing paste group (α > 0.05). The low-shrink posterior restorative showed similar surface roughness when compared to dimethacrylate composite resins and suitable to posterior restorations. Keywords: Tooth. Silorane Resins. Background:Dental stone cast needs 24 to 48 hours to evaporate excess water and acquire enough strength for manipulation. The microwave oven is used to save time by drying and disinfecting stone casts.Objectives:The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of microwave oven drying on the compressive strength of Type III and Type IV dental stone in three time intervals-3 hours, 5 hours and 24 hours after pouring.Methods:The study involved 120 samples: 60 samples for each type of dental stone. Thirty samples were subjected to air drying at 3, 5 and 24 hours) and 30 samples were dried in the microwave oven at 2450 MHZ -900 W for 150 seconds (at 3, 5 and 24 hours). The samples were tested by unconfined compression machine, with a 2000 kg proving ring at cross-head speed of 1 mm/min.Results:For the Type III dental stone drying at 3 hours, microwave radiation causes a significant increase in compressive strength and shows the highest score (mean 125 kg/cm); however, at 5 hours no significant difference was observed. However, at the 24 hour time interval, microwave drying causes significant reduction in the mean (100 kg/cm)p<0.01 .For the Type IV dental stone testing at all-time intervals (3,5, 24 hours), a significant reduction (p<0.05) in mean values was shown(80,85,87 respectively).Conclusion:Microwave oven drying increased the compressive strength of Type III dental stone at the 3 hour time interval from pouring, while microwave drying at the 5 hour interval had no significant effect; and at 24 hour the compressive strength of the dental stone was reduced. For the Type IV dental stone microwave drying had a detrimental effect on compressive strength at all-time intervals.

Aim. To determine the impact of a newly composed tooth brushing rhyme on oral hygiene status of 6 to 7-year-old children. Methods. A total of 60 children in the age range of 6 to 7 years were randomly assigned to either group 1 (experimental) or group 2 (control). Group 1 children were given brushing instructions and made to memorize a newly composed tooth brushing rhyme; the control group received only routine brushing instructions. Baseline oral hygiene status of all the children was assessed using the oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S) and its modification for primary dentition. Oral prophylaxis was performed, and OHI was further recorded at intervals of seven, 14 and 28 days for all the children. The data was tabulated, compared, and analyzed statistically. Results. There was no significant difference in the baseline OHI-S scores between the two groups (p≥0.05). However, there was a significant difference in OHI-S scores in all the considered time intervals after the intervention. Based on the two components of OHI-S, a statistically significant difference was noted only in debris scores. (7days: P=0.04, 14 days: P≤0.001, 28 days: P≤0.001) Conclusion. The newly composed tooth brushing rhyme had a significant impact on the oral hygiene scores of children, and can be recommended in the routine educational curriculum of pre-primary children.

Stress in caregivers may affect the healthcare recipients receive. We examined the impact of stress experienced by 45 adult caregivers of their elderly demented parents. The participants completed a 32-item questionnaire about the impact of experienced stress. The questionnaire also asked about interventions that might help to reduce the impact of stress. After exploratory factor analysis, we reduced the 32-item questionnaire to 13 items. Results indicated that caregivers experienced stress, anxiety, and sadness. Also, emotional, but not financial or professional, well-being was significantly impacted. There was no significant difference between the impact of caregiver stress on members from the sandwich generation and those from the nonsandwich generation. Meeting with a social worker for resource availability was identified most frequently as a potentially helpful intervention for coping with the impact of stress.
