This research aimed to find out the good EFL adult learners learning strategies in acquiring the foreign language and how the learning strategies affect the leaners achievement at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The method used in this research was qualitative method. The instrument were an interview and audio recorder. The participant of the research were the graduate students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare within the age of 25-65 as one of the criteria of adult learners. The result of the research showed that the learning strategies applied by the learner were direct and indirect strategy. Direct strategy covered memory related strategy, cognitive strategy and compensatory strategy while metacognitive strategy, affective strategy and social strategy were included in indirect strategy.

This study investigates the use of Translanguaging as a Pedagogical Strategy by an EFL teacher in terms of interaction between the teacher and the students in teaching and learning process. It focuses to explore in what situation, do the practices of translanguaging which go on in EFL classroom. This study applied qualitative method. Two meetings of classroom observations were recorded by using audio recorder. Also, a teacher and ten students were interviewed after the classroom observation. The recordings and interviews were transcribed and analyzed based on in what situation, do the the practices of translanguaging go on in EFL classroom. In the research findings there were three kinds of languages namely English as the Foreign language, Indonesia as the national language, and Konjo as the local language that used by the teacher and students in practice of translanguaging during teaching and learning process in EFL Classroom. Therefore, the researcher found that the teacher used translanguaging in seven situations during teaching process. And students used translanguaging in six situations during the teaching and learning process.

The present study provides both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the formation of language learners’ metacognition as the Mandarin-English college students in China. I hypothesized that language learning will be promoted by intervention of course teaching if students are trained to become more aware of and skillful at the use of metacognition strategies and other learning strategies that can be used in the language learning process. 3 of 115 freshmen from department of foreign language in Southwest Petroleum University are chosen to be subjects of the study. The result carries out to examine the intervention of strategy course on the formation of metacognition of English major freshmen in their language learning. The conclusions obtained from pre-interviews and post-interview have indicated that the subjects’ metacognition knowledge and metacognitive strategy use in language learning are conflicting. After the course, the metacognition of the subjects increased.

Self-regulation of learning plays a vital role in improving second/foreign language learning as it can encourage the development of autonomous learners. It is seen that, nevertheless, ESL/EFL learners in different contexts are not fully aware of the importance of self-regulated language learning (SRLL) strategies in their English language learning. The present study, therefore, aims at investigating the use of SRLL strategies by English-majored students at a university in Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. This study involved 100 English-majored freshmen in answering a closed-ended questionnaire. The results showed that students sometimes used SRLL strategies, and they used SRLL strategies for keeping and monitoring records and seeking social assistance more often than for other purposes. The findings imply that students lacked knowledge of how to use SRLL strategies and get engaged in using SRLL strategies. This study recommends that students’ awareness of SRLL strategies should be seriously taken into account in order to facilitate their learner autonomy.

This research intended to find out the comprehensive description of learning strategies, and styles applied by the part-time job University student at the Christian University of Indonesia Toraja, and all the contributing factors that affect his learning process. The method used in this research was grounded theory. The instruments were an interview, direct observation, and documentation. The participant of the research was the part-time job student academic year 2014/2015 at English Department of Christian university of Indonesia Toraja. The result of the research showed that (i) the learning strategies performed by this student were the direct and indirect strategy. The direct strategy included memory, cognitive, compensation strategies while indirect strategy covered affective and social strategy. (ii) Learning styles perform by this student were visual and kinesthetic style. And (iii) the factors contributing to student's success were Personality, Motivation, English practicing, Social interaction, and Self-management. Keywords: learning strategies, learning styles, contributing factors to learning process, part time job student.

Language is present as a form of crystallization of the values of civilization and mediating and directing the orientation of the movement of civilization. Therefore, language becomes an important and interesting variable to be studied and revised scientifically for the preservation and progress of civilization. The Republic of Indonesia has an official language used by its citizens, namely Bahasa Indonesia. This language aims to unite the Indonesian people who are multicultural or have ethnic and cultural diversity so that no distance separates fellow Indonesian citizens from hundreds of tribes, according to the 1928 Youth Pledge Convention. The thing that must be realized now is the use of the Indonesian language which is getting weaker. The weakness is not that it is not used at all but that foreign terms are included in public discussion, and it tends to be considered more prestigious to be used. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method that refers to the sources of literature and the results of previous studies. The existence of Indonesian can decline when most Indonesians are happy and proud to use a foreign language that is considered more respectable and classier. However, the current condition of the existence of the Indonesian language is still in a safe stage. Bahasa Indonesia can continue to exist while preserving it by following the prevailing context and linguistic rules and developing its construction according to the needs and desires of civilization.


English communication is a problem faced by the human resources involved in the tourism activities in Desa Wisata Tista, Kerambitan Subdistrict, Tabanan Regency, Bali. However, there had been no research that identified English problems. Then, this research was done to (1) identify the problem faced by the human resources involved in tourism activities in Desa Wisata Tista, Kerambitan Subdistrict, Tabanan Regency, Bali and (2) finding out the proper and suitable English learning strategies to improve the English mastery of the human resources involved in the tourism activities in Desa Wisata Tista, Kerambitan Subdistrict, Tabanan Regency, Bali. The data used in this research were gained through interviews, observation, and literature studies. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the analysis reveal that (1) the numbers of the human resources who can speak English is limited, (2) the lack of speaking skills using English, (3) the lack of English vocabulary they have, and (4) low level of self-confidence to communicate in English. These problems can be overcome by implementing several strategies, namely (1) memory strategy, (2) cognitive strategy, (3) affective strategy and (4) social strategy. Based on the identification, the managers can conduct English course for the community. This study explores and identifies some reasons for the problems of foreign language learning (English) and teaching from the perspective of instructors and learners using the case study model. The data of the study was gathered by a semi-structured interview form, and the study group of the research was composed of English language instructors and graduate students at Ahi Evran University. Random sampling method was used to determine 15 instructors and 20 graduate students to face-to-face interview, and the data of the study was analysed by content analysis method, which the students and instructors agreed on students who have been problematic in language learning process. In addition to students, examination systems, instructional programs, language teachers’ qualifications and learning environments have been considered as barriers to language learning. On the other hand, students and instructors suggested starting learning/teaching English earlier, much more practice and exams on all four skills; elective courses; more practice and communication; revisions in teacher training system, considering individual differences; motivating and encouraging students; and designing well equipped language environment and teaching materials.

The issue of learning strategies remains a complicated matter in the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Although the research has been intensive in the last twenty-five years, it is difficult to draw teaching strategies that fit learning contexts that vary greatly due to particular features of the learner. Furthermore, regarding grammar, teachers are even more convinced that it is their primary duty to lead and monitor the acquisition process in the classroom. The case of schools in Albania, where English is taught as a foreign language, shows that pupils who do well in proficiency tests, do not perform adequately in oral communication for the same grammatical knowledge. This papers aims to introduce a range of available grammar learning strategies for learners of EFL to use in the A2 and B1 levels. The material is accompanied by concrete examples of how grammar learning strategies can be included in lesson plans, based on textbook material. The aim is to render interested readers the awareness of the possible need to increase communicative grammar proficiency in learners of EFL by increasing their awareness of the range of means available to create long-lasting associations between the theory, acquisition, and correct usage of grammar. The earlier the attempts to create independent grammar learners, the sooner the opportunity exists for these learners to reach native-like grammar proficiency.

Speaking is considered to be difficult thing, moreover English as a foreign language. Students' performance depends on their personalities. Students who have low participation in speaking activity in the classroom lose their opportunity to practice their speaking skill which may cause poor speaking skill and achievement. However, some of students are active in speaking activity in the classroom that leads them to have good skill and achievement in speaking. This study attempts to reveal: (1) speaking strategies used by Indonesian tertiary students in terms of speaking English and strategies to improve their speaking ability, and (2) to identify speaking strategies mostly used by the students when they speak English and improve their speaking ability. This study is a descriptive research since its purpose is to describe the Indonesian tertiary students’ learning strategies in learning speaking English. The data from 15 tertiary students, who have good performance and achievement in speaking, from one of schools of higher education in Cimahi were collected using a 21 items questionnaire of a modified version of Strategy Inventory Language Learning (SILL) and 5 items interview questions. The result of the study revealed that some speaking strategies are used in terms of speaking English and improve speaking ability, namely cognitive, metacognitive and compensation strategy. In the type of speaking strategy that mostly used by the student in terms of speaking English is compensation strategy, while cognitive strategy was indicated as the mostly speaking strategies used by the Indonesian tertiary students in improving their speaking ability.  Considering to the study conducted, it is recommended to students that they should know what strategies that appropriate and can help them in learning speaking English. The students should be able to choose strategies they need in learning and analyze which strategies that give better effect on their own learning.Keywords: Speaking, strategy, speaking strategy, tertiary students

This research purpose is to examine the informal learning among automotive workshop entrepreneurs. Three research objectives such as informal learning factors, informal learning strategies and informal learning effects are also identified. This study used a case study by using a qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews have been used for data collection. By using purposive sampling, five automotive workshop entrepreneurs in Kota Tinggi were selected as respondents. The findings show that individual needs, environment, interests, motivations and job requirements have been factors that help automotive workshop entrepreneurs involved in informal learning. In addition, reading materials, electronic media, observation, consulting with experts and try and error are informal learning strategies that have been used. Moreover, the effects of informal learning can be seen as the enhancement of knowledge and skills. Meanwhile, there has been a positive change in the attitude of automotive workshop entrepreneurs. This study also provided suggestions for improvement to future researchers.
