CONCERNING THE PECTORAL FROM THE BURIAL MOUND TOLSTAYA MOGILA. BASED ON THE STUDY OF SCYTHIAN RELICS OF GREEK WORK

The uniqueness and complexity of the composition on the pectoral examined here, a piece gold jewelry from the Scythian burial mound Tolstaya Mogila, С. 4 BC, encouraged researchers to assume it held exceptional significance in Scythian culture, and the idea emerged that the pectoral belonged to a Scythian cult role, and this view has been developed in most studies. However, we do not have any information confirming ritual its use. The pectoral was found in the mound, but outside the burial itself. The plot of the main narrative depicted can be correlated with an ancient legend about the origin of the dynasty of the Macedonian kings, the Argeades. Its style and technical features do not rule out identification of the place of manufacture as Macedonia or Northern Greece. The “Scythian tradition” in modern scholarship allows for the exchange of Royal gifts, as well as military trophies, between Scythian and Macedonian (Greek) rulers. Still, many things remain unclear. The pectoral has no analogues either in the Scythian world, or in the Greek. Despite the correspondence of its elements and techniques with those of other works, the pectoral remains an exceptional and individual work of art, still unsurpassed in the complexity of its design and the quality of its workmanship.

Every new pandemic forces us to start new specific behaviors both in the civil life and within the hospitals trying to contain the spreading of the infection and preserve the more fragile people. In this regard, at the debut of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-CoronaVirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, our Local Health Agency had drastically modified every clinical and organizational pathways in order to limit the diffusion of the infection as well as to maintain a good quality of care and preserve healthcare workers. We report how we have modified the usual pediatric intra-hospital pathways in our primary level hospital to avoid mixing children with suspected and non-suspected symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Before every hospitalization, regardless of symptoms, each child and him/her parent/caregiver are undergone to rapid antigenic and molecular swab to rule out a SARS-CoV-2 infection; hence, positive patients are transferred to Pediatric Unit of third level hospital equipped by a Pediatric COVID Intensive Unit. We think the healthcare behaviors described in this manuscript can help to reduce the intra-hospital spreading of SARS-CoV-2, although children seem to have a minimal role in the dissemination, but we cannot let down your guard. Simultaneously we observed that the overall children requiring inpatient pediatric evaluation and hospitalization have dramatically decreased from the beginning of pandemic.

We study whether paternal trauma is transmitted to the children of survivors of Confederate prisoner of war (POW) camps during the US Civil War (1861–1865) to affect their longevity at older ages, the mechanisms behind this transmission, and the reversibility of this transmission. We examine children born after the war who survived to age 45, comparing children whose fathers were non-POW veterans and ex-POWs imprisoned in very different camp conditions. We also compare children born before and after the war within the same family by paternal ex-POW status. The sons of ex-POWs imprisoned when camp conditions were at their worst were 1.11 times more likely to die than the sons of non-POWs and 1.09 times more likely to die than the sons of ex-POWs when camp conditions were better. Paternal ex-POW status had no impact on daughters. Among sons born in the fourth quarter, when maternal in utero nutrition was adequate, there was no impact of paternal ex-POW status. In contrast, among sons born in the second quarter, when maternal nutrition was inadequate, the sons of ex-POWs who experienced severe hardship were 1.2 times more likely to die than the sons of non-POWs and ex-POWs who fared better in captivity. Socioeconomic effects, family structure, father-specific survival traits, and maternal effects, including quality of paternal marriages, cannot explain our findings. While we cannot rule out fully psychological or cultural effects, our findings are most consistent with an epigenetic explanation.

Different approaches to the study of the system of students’ individual work management have been analyzed. The peculiarity of the proposed integrative technology of students’ individual work management is that the management effectiveness is achieved through the organization of the students’ individual work with diagnostic objectives, the achievement of which is subject to a clear description and definition. Structural components of integrated technology are: goals, content, methods, organizational forms and functional components. It has been proved that the effectiveness of management of students’ individual work depends on the goals and methods of achieving them; internal motivation and cognitive interests of students; quality of the content aspect of educational information for self-study; creation of favorable conditions for self-realization of a student; the methodological provision of the discipline, its precise planning, organization and management, student’s free time; the competent use of various forms of current and periodic control. Integrated technology develops intellectual and creative students’ abilities, helps to make decisions. This circumstance is especially important, as in modern science, there is an increasingly evident tendency to the synthesis of knowledge, to the awareness and disclosure of the collectivity of cognition objects.

Phosphomannomutase 2 deficiency (PMM2-CDG) is the most frequent congenital disorder of glycosylation. PMM2-CDG patients develop chronic cerebellar atrophy as a neurological hallmark. However, other acute neurological phenomena such as stroke-like episodes (SLE), epilepsy, migraine, and cerebrovascular events, may also occur, and they are frequently the cause of disability and impaired quality of life. Among these, SLE are among the most stressful situations for families and doctors, as their risk factors are not known, their underlying pathomechanisms remain undiscovered, and clinical guidelines for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment are lacking. In this paper, the recent SLE experiences of two PMM2-CDG patients are examined to provide clinical clues to help improve diagnosis through a clinical constellation of symptoms and a clinical definition, but also to support a neuroelectrical hypothesis as an underlying mechanism. An up-to-date literature review will help to identify evidence-based and non-evidence-based management recommendations. Presently neuropediatricians and neurologists are not capable of diagnosing stroke-like episodes in an unequivocal way, so there is still a need to perform invasive studies (to rule out other acute diseases) that may, in the end, prove unnecessary or even harmful. However, reaching a correct and early diagnosis would lead not only to avoidance of invasive tests but also to better recognition, management, and understanding of the disease itself. There is a great need for understanding of SLE that may ultimately be very informative for the detection of patients at risk, and the future development of preventive and management measures.

In the past years there has been a growing demand for precise earthquake locations for seismotectonic and seismic hazard studies. Recently this has become possible because of the development of sophisticated location algorithms, as well as hardware resources. This is expected to lead to a better insight of seismicity in the near future. A well-known technique, which has been recently used for relocating earthquake data sets is the double difference algorithm. In its original implementation it makes use of a one-dimensional ray tracing routine to calculate seismic wave travel times. We have modified the implementation of the algorithm by incorporating a three-dimensional velocity model and ray tracing in order to relocate a set of earthquakes in the area of the Mygdonia Basin (Northern Greece). This area is covered by a permanent regional network and occasionally by temporary local networks. The velocity structure is very well known, as the Mygdonia Basin has been used as an international test site for seismological studies since 1993, which makes it an appropriate location for evaluating earthquake location algorithms, with the quality of the results depending only on the quality of the data and the algorithm itself. The new earthquake locations reveal details of the area's seismotectonic structure, which are blurred, if not misleading, when resolved by standard (routine) location algorithms.

Faktura, literally "texture," is related to the Russian avant-garde’s preoccupation with the fundamental principles of the creative process. The term, applied to a work of art, addresses the way in which materials are used, the processes, the surrounding environment, and the artistic devices; it characterizes the textural structure of a work of art and the manner by which it was constructed. As a creative principle, it rejects a pictorial space based on perspective and the illusion of three-dimensional space projected onto a flat canvas. The Russian formalist critic Viktor Shklovsky considered faktura to be the single most important quality of an object of art as a constructed object: it was the evidence of its having been made. He applied the term to poetic writing as well as the visual arts; in both cases faktura offered a visual demonstration of the properties inherent in a material or construction: "The whole effort of a poet and a painter is aimed first and foremost at creating a continuous and thoroughly palpable object, an object with a faktura." The term faktura remained a fluid concept during the 1910s, its essential qualities being further defined and developed by members of the avant-garde from 1913 well into the mid-1920s. While faktura, as initially used by members of the early Russian avant-garde, was characterized by the use of natural materials and a holistic–metaphysical approach to art, it was later adapted by the Constructivists to conform to a strictly materialist ideology and utilitarian orientation in artistic production.

Abstract Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of bolus-tracking ROI positioning on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) image quality. Methods In this retrospective monocentric study, all patients had undergone CCTA by step-and-shoot mode to rule out coronary artery disease within a cohort at intermediate risk. Two groups were formed, depending on ROI positioning (left atrium (LA) or ascending aorta (AA)). Each group contained 96 patients. To select pairs of patients, propensity score matching was used. Image quality with regard to coronary arteries as well as pulmonary arteries was evaluated using quantitative and qualitative scores. Results In terms of the coronary arteries, there was no significant difference between both groups using quantitative (SNR AA 14.92 vs. 15.46; p = 0.619 | SNR LM 19.80 vs. 20.30; p = 0.661 | SNR RCA 24.34 vs. 24.30; p = 0.767) or qualitative scores (4.25 vs. 4.29; p = 0.672), respectively. With regard to pulmonary arteries, we found significantly higher quantitative (SNR RPA 8.70 vs. 5.89; p < 0.001 | SNR LPA 9.06 vs. 6.25; p < 0.001) and qualitative scores (3.97 vs. 2.24; p < 0.001) for ROI positioning in the LA than for ROI positioning in the AA. Conclusions ROI positioning in the LA or the AA results in comparable image quality of CT coronary arteriography, while positioning in the LA leads to significantly higher image quality of the pulmonary arteries. These results support ROI positioning in the LA, which also facilitates triple-rule-out CT scanning. Key Points • ROI positioning in the left atrium or the ascending aorta leads to comparable image quality of the coronary arteries. • ROI positioning in the left atrium results in significantly higher image quality of the pulmonary arteries. • ROI positioning in the left atrium is feasible to perform triple-rule-out CTA.

Introduction: Recurrent falls are a usual problema in older patients. It is therefore important to learn how to differentiate a pathological or syncopal episode from a simple stumbling fall, especially in patients who have limitations for communicating clearly and are poorly understood, in general terms, during the medical consultation. Implantable loop recorders (ILR) have been used as an investigation tool in selected cases of recurrent falls in older patients. Consequently, this case report aims to describe its usefulness in this type of patients.Case presentation: An 87-year-old female patient, hypertensive, with a history of recent stroke and frequent falls —referred to as stumbling—, received an implantable loop recorder due to atrial fibrillation. During one follow-up appointment, a 36-second pause related to a fall was documented, so a bicameral pacemaker was implanted.Conclusions: Evaluating repeated falls in older patients is complex; it must be done in detail to rule out syncopal episodes. Implantable devices to diagnose arrhythmic causes are useful and allow achieving accurate diagnoses and establish specific behaviors aimed at improving the quality of life of patients.
