Sea cucumbers are an essential fishery resource. Therefore, effective aquaculture methods should be developed to achieve their optimal production. Sea cucumbers are susceptible to various environmental factors, one of which is water quality. Monitoring water quality based on physical and chemical parameters should be useful to the rearing system in aquaculture. In practical use, farmers usually monitor only temperature, salinity, and pH, neglecting the essential role of chemical parameters. This review focuses on and urges the monitoring of physical and chemical parameters. We explored the water quality parameters that may be crucial to the sea cucumber rearing system, including temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, turbidity, particulate organic matter, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, silicate, and phosphate. Furthermore, this paper presents a practical way to monitor the aquaculture or rearing system of sea cucumbers. It is suggested that temperature and salinity are the crucial physical parameters, while the essential chemical parameters are phosphate, nitrate, and ammonia.

Water quality monitoring is of great importance in managing drinking water lakes or reservoirs. However, developing such an effective monitoring system used in evaluating water quality is difficult, due to spatial and temporal variation in water quality that are usually hard to interpret. Principle component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA) techniques were used in this study to determine the principle water parameters, and explore the relationship between the physical and chemical water parameters, respectively in Macau Main Storage Reservoir (MSR) that is experiencing algal bloom in recent years. Twenty-eight water parameters including physical and chemical parameters were monitored each month from Jan 2001 to Dec 2010. The results showed that using PCA, six of the water quality parameters were found less important in explaining the monthly variation of the water quality and thus excluded from the further CCA, while applying CCA, the first six canonical correlations were 0.998, 0.988, 0.937, 0.778, 0.606 and 0.453, indicating that electro-conductivity and chloride compounds were the dominant (highly scored) variables of the physical parameters and chemical parameters, respectively. These results are helpful in understanding the main physical and chemical parameters involved in MSR, thus improving the water quality monitoring system in drinking water reservoirs.

Communal wastewater treatment plant (CWWTP) has been chosen as one system to treat domestic wastewater due to simple technology, flexible management, and cost-effectiveness. There are 376 CWWTP have been recorded by Environmental Agency of Yogyakarta (DLH DIY) that spread in five regencies. Monitoring results on CWWTP effluent showed that some physical and chemical parameters did not meet the domestic wastewater standard. Therefore, evaluation of removal efficiency in terms physical and chemical parameters are necessary. The samples were collected from nine CWWTP in Banguntapan, Bantul and Gamping sub-districts. The physical and chemicals parameters (pH, TSS, BOD, COD, Ammonia, oil, and grease) of influent and effluent from CWWTP are analyzed based on National Standard of Indonesia (SNI) for domestic wastewater. The results show that BOD (>70%) and TSS (>50%) have better removal effectiveness compare with COD, ammonia, oil, and grease (40%). Overall, CWWTP in Banguntapan subdistrict has better performance compare with CWWTP in Bantul subdistrict.

Balikpapan bay has an important and strategic role, such as a buffer for sustainability of the estuary function as the Balikpapan seaport. In Balikpapan esuary watershed there are large and small rivers, including Somber River. Settlements and industries around the river banks have caused a decrease of river water quality, especially activities that place pollutant loads (waste) on the river bodies. This research is focused on physical and chemical parameters, including Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), temperature, pH, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen).Water quality research was conducted by dividing the river into 7 measurment points. The distribution of measurement points was based on water quality considerations that represent upstream, middle, and downstream water quality, as well as considering easy access. Water samples at each mesurment point ware collected at three different depths (vertically). Concentrations of several parameters that have been obtained were then analyzed using the Pollution Index method (Pollution Index) which is used to determine relative pollutant levels to the allowed water quality parameters. The testing procedure by pollution index refers to procedure poured in the Decree of the State Minister for the Environment No. 115 in 2003 concerning of Determining Guidelines of Water Quality Status. Based on the field measurments, an average value for temperatures obtained ranging from 30.0 - 32.1 ° C, TDS values 4270 mg / L - 10000 mg / L, DO ranges between 1.8 mg / L - 3.1 mg / L, and pH values between 6.6 - 7.1. From the calculation and data analisys of physical and chemical parameters, the research can be concluded that the location of measurement point 1 shows water quality status being lightly polluted, while point 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 shows water quality status being moderately polluted. Keywords: Water quality, estuary, Somber river, pollution index
