This article presents the results of an investigation that has measured the causal impact of the intervention carried out within the framework of the School of Computational Thinking project, launched by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Spain in the 2018-2019 academic year. Specifically, the work studies whether it is possible to improve the development of students’ mathematical competence through programming activities using the Scratch language in 5th grade of Primary Education. The research design consists of an empirical intervention study based on the lessons learned from the ScratchMaths project, developed by University College London in the United Kingdom. Two groups of non-equivalent students have been used, the experimental group and the control group, without random assignment, with pre-test and post-test measurement on the mathematical competence variable. More than 3,700 students participated in the investigation, who were assigned either to the experimental group -which worked on the mathematical competence through computer programming activities- or to the control group -which did so with other common activities and resources in the area of Mathematics. The results show that the students in the experimental group developed this competence to a greater extent than the students in the control group, with a significant and positive impact on it. Being the intervention effect size d=0.449, it can be stated that the project achieved the intended effect on the students’ mathematical competence. The generalization of computational thinking experiences in the curriculum can guarantee the improvement of the quality of the teaching and learning processes.

The aim of this quasi-experimental research is to investigate the effectiveness of formative assessment on the progress of private elementary school students. 77 students (33 girls and 44 boys) were split into two groups. The experimental group used an app called the Plickers app daily and was further divided by gender into two groups, while the control group used a revision sheet as a formative assessment. Student progress was assessed by comparing the mean scores of a pre-test to those of a post-test taken after one week of using the formative assessment tools. The results indicate that both formative assessment tools help improve student progress. However, the Plickers App had a greater positive impact than the revision sheet. Further, greater improvement was displayed by girls compared to boys. The researchers concluded that continuous usage of Plickers in classes can help promote positive students' perception, improve performance, and reduce gaps between high and low achievers.

Speaking is a crucial form of communication in language learning settings. Through speaking skill, ESL/EFL language learners can communicate and convey information. Pictorial aids have been deployed as efficacious mediatory tools in teaching various disciplines such as language teaching. Still, to the best of the researchers’ knowledge, a direct look at the impacts of pictorial aids on EFL intermediate learners’ speaking proficiency has been less addressed. Thus, the main concern of the present study was to investigate the role of pictorial aids in creating a favorable ground for teaching speaking and how it may affect learners’ speaking proficiency. To this end, 40 intermediate EFL learners were selected out of 70 from a private English language institute in Shiraz, Iran. The homogeneity of their proficiency level was established via the administration of Oxford Proficiency Test. Then they were randomly divided into two control and experimental groups. Three instruments were used to answer the research questions: Pre-test and post-test interviews, classroom observation, and a questionnaire. Subsequently, the participants were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=20) and a control (n=20) group. During 6 sessions, the experimental group received treatment while using pictorial aids. By contrast, the control group followed their routine instruction at the institution through traditional method, i.e. the tasks of Top notch 2. Then by the end of the study, an interview was held as a post test in order to monitor any effect the treatment might have on increasing speaking proficiency of the participants under the investigation. The results gained from a post-test were analyzed via t-test indicated that visual aids had a positive impact on the intermediate learners’ speaking proficiency in which experimental group outperformed control group.

This research aims to know whether the students’ ability in writing procedure text could be improved through the use of Instagram picture series as teaching media. This is a classroom action research (CAR) implemented in two cycles, on the eleventh-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah NU Sidoarjo in 2019/2020 academic year. This research uses quasi-experimental design which has these criteria based on Mueller: 1). No random selection of subjects; 2). Pre-test both groups; 3). Experimental group receives new treatment; 4). Control group receive no treatment or the normal treatment; 5).  Post-test both groups. The population is 126 students. The samples are ten students of XI MIPA 1 as the experimental group and ten students of XI MIPA 2 as the control group. The independent variable is Instagram picture series as media of teaching writing. The dependent variable is the students’ ability in writing procedure text. In collecting the data, the researcher applied instrument: interview, questionnaire, Instagram application, writing pre-test and writing post-test. The data was analyzed statistically using T-test. The researcher examines two cycles of test. As the result in the first cycle, the pre-test average score of the control group is 44 and the experimental group is 45.5. In the first cycle of pot-test, the average score of the control group is 70 and the experimental group is 78. Both of them don’t get the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM) or the level of basic competence score which is 80. So, the second cycle of post-test is held. As the result, the average score of the control group is 74 and the experimental group is 82.5. The next cycle of post-test isn’t needed because the average score of the experimental group is already passed over the KKM. It means that, the use of Instagram picture series as teaching media has the significant positive impact to the improvement of the students’ ability in writing procedure text.
