To compete effectively in the global marketplace of the twenty-first century, manufacturing companies are trying to maintain a high level of flexibility and responsiveness to achieve agility and to remain competitive. Manufacturers are under tremendous pressure to improve productivity and quality while reducing costs. The new competition is in terms of reduced cost, improved quality products with higher performance, a wider range of products and better services all delivered simultaneously to enhance value to customers. In such environment providing good quality product at low cost for a medium scale industry has become very tough. To provide good quality product at low cost, small industries need a formulation of some manufacturing approaches like agile manufacturing to manufacture defect free products within their materials cost limit. Medium scale steel manufacturing industries like Magnum steel limited (MSL), banmore are facing problems of higher rejections in form of wastes so as to increase their cost. This paper aims to analyze the application of agile manufacturing in magnum steel limited in order to reduce wastages through implementing lean tools and techniques. An agility audit questionnaire is used for assessing the agility level of the company to identify the current level of performance within the company with respect to the key elements of agility. MSL’s agile experience is reported including a list of recommendation for improving its competitiveness to offer solution alternatives not only to the current problems but also to the ones that may be encountered in the future.

Since the end of the 1970s and early 1980s, with the introduction of foreign MRPII/ERP software and the advanced business management thought Chinese manufacturing industry began the road to high-level information. After 30 years of development, Chinese manufacturing industry has experienced 20 years start-up and early stage, main features of this period were long-period implementation, expensive spending and poor flexibility, coupled with the low management level and out-dated IT technology. The probability of successful implementation of enterprise ERP is very low. Since then the stage was more than 5 years of growth, and the characteristics of this period were the domestic ERP software. With simple application, short cycle implementation and low cost, many small and medium-sized enterprises had carried on successful application. Since 2005, our country enterprise ERP application entered maturity, the main features of this period are wider range and improving success rate of ERP application. The article also pointed out the deficiencies of ERP applications in different periods, and its development prospects are ERPII

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review current continuous improvement implementation models and frameworks, and present a new conceptual framework tailored specifically to the needs of UK manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach The paper details the in-depth review of 20 existing models or frameworks for continuous improvement implementation, demonstrating the need for a new industry and region specific solution. Through the incorporation of previous findings from literature, coupled with the positive aspects of the current offerings, a new conceptual framework for continuous improvement implementation in UK manufacturing companies is presented. Findings The paper demonstrates the need for industry and region specific frameworks and demonstrates that current models and frameworks do not completely fulfil the objective of the research. A new continuous improvement implementation framework is therefore presented in a user friendly format, comprising positive aspects of previous models and frameworks where applicable. Research limitations/implications The focus of the research is limited to the UK and the manufacturing industry. It is therefore not clear the applicability of the framework presented to other regions and industries. The framework presented is also conceptual at this stage and requires validation through interview and application. Practical implications The framework presented will provide senior managers wishing to implement continuous improvement an understanding of the high level process, as well as awareness of their role within the roll out. Overall, the framework provides a clear guide whilst also allowing for individual tailoring of the elements contained to the needs of the company. Originality/value The paper presents a new conceptual framework; the first to be tailored to the needs of UK manufacturing companies. The framework has also been demonstrated to be a more robust solution than those currently in existence.

Purpose Agility addresses vibrant solutions for running companies to meet the dares of customers asking for high quality and low- cost goods and services. The purpose of this study is to identify the practices for the successful implementation of agile manufacturing and measure their relationship with business performance measures of the manufacturing industry. Design/methodology/approach The data for the pilot study were collected from 26 respondents through a questionnaire survey. After confirming the normality and reliability of the data, it was analyzed to examine the relationship between agile manufacturing practices and business performance measures. Findings The results show that there are strong relationships between agile manufacturing practices and business performance. Further, these attributes significantly contribute to delivering better business performance. Originality/value The study signifies the need for agile manufacturing in enhancing business performance for the growth and sustainability of the organization.

This research addresses the implementations of agile philosophy in SME’s to increase the production flow rate. Every Small manufacturing industry has put in continuous efforts for its survival in the current volatile economy. In order to face the situation, industries are trying to implement new and efficient techniques in their manufacturing operations. In this research, a systematic approach of developing a user friendly dynamic tool for cycle time reduction and to improve the production flow rate. These effective tools mainly focus on reducing the non-value adding activities, queue time and delays. Here, we selected a medium scale pump industry for our research work and the various process times for manufacturing a mono block pump were obtained from a pump manufacturing industry. The result shows that the implementations of agile manufacturing concepts to the small scale pump manufacturing industry for increasing the production time and profit level.

The manufacturing industry majorly constitutes electrical, electronics, telecommunication, mechanical engineering, and textile companies. This sector provides more employment for the skilled level employee than that of service and information technology sectors. Besides, the manufacturing industry significantly contributes to the economy. Hence, the employees working in such companies are expected to be engaged with the goals of the company. A high level of engagement leads to productivity. This study aims to understand the level of socially inclined employee engagement and its impact on the perceived image of the company’s CSR activities. The study uses Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) to determine the association between employee engagement and CSR activity. The results indicate that there exists a positive association between engagement level and positive perception of CSR activity. The instrument to measure this association is developed and supported with the evidence from reliability tests and validity test

Purpose: Most of the large manufacturing firms in Kenya have been experiencing declining performance in terms of revenue, sales and the profit margins for more than a decade. This has seen some of the large manufacturing firms in the country consider strategies such as relocating or restructuring their operations, opting to serve the local market through importing from low-cost manufacturing areas instead of adopting turnaround strategies. This therefore prompted a question on whether turnaround strategies such as reengineering strategy are effective for the manufacturing firms; hence the motivation of this study. Methodology: This study was informed by theory of constraints. A descriptive research design was adopted while 708 large manufacturing firms in Kenya registered under the Kenya Association of Manufacturers were targeted. The sample size for the study was 249 firms selected randomly from all the 14 sectors of the manufacturing industry in Kenya. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire, while mean, frequencies and percentages were used to describe the data. Correlation and regression analysis were done to show direction, magnitude and significance of the association between the variables. Findings: The findings revealed that re-engineering strategy had significant and positive influence on the performance of large manufacturing firms in Kenya. The findings further revealed that organizational culture had significant moderating effect on the relationship between reengineering strategy and performance of large manufacturing companies. The study concluded that reengineering strategy as one of the turnaround strategies positively influenced the performance of large manufacturing companies. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: It is therefore recommended that the management of large manufacturing firms uphold reengineering strategy in order to enhance performance.

Productivity plays a significant role for most companies in order to measure the efficiency. In reality there is an essential need to evaluate the different factors which increasing productivity and achieving the high level of quality, high production rate , machine utilization. On the other hand, manufacturing companies are striving to sustain their competitiveness by improving productivity and quality of manufacturing industry. So it can be acquired by finding ways to deal with various industrial problems which have affected the productivity of manufacturing systems. This paper aims at applying statistical analysis and computer simulation to recognize and to weight the significance of different factors in the production line. Based on the final result the two factors which are B (Number of labor) and C (Failure time of lifter) have the most significant effect on the manufacturing system productivity. In order to achieve the maximum productivity the factors should be placed on the levels which are: A= -1, B=1, C=1 and D=1. This means that the service rate of mixer = UNIF (20, 40), number of labor=20, failure time of lifter =60 min and number of permil=5 respectively.

In current scenario, all the manufacturing industries are placing constant efforts for their endurance in the current global volatile economy. Manufacturing industries are annoying to implement new and professional techniques in their regular production processes. Some of the recognized tools are applied and their awareness has been growing among the industries, especially in production sector. Last two decades have witnessed an explosion in the area of quality and productivity improvement initiatives in the manufacturing industries by different tools and techniques such as lean manufacturing, total quality management, total productive maintenance, six sigma implementation etc. The objective of this study is to enlighten the importance of lean techniques implementation in a medium scale belt manufacturing industry. This research study helps to exhibit the existing hidden potential in the selected industry as well as a selection of appropriate techniques for productivity improvements. Also, it aims to eradicate wastes and non-value added activities at every stage in order to enhance the overall productivity. From the results after implementation of appropriate lean techniques it was found that, the lead time was reduced about 1256 minutes and the overall production was increased by about 9%.

This paper examines international relocation determinants of Czech manufacturing companies in order to estimate the probability of potential delocalizations. The research is based on statistical evaluation of "internal keep-factors" (particular company features strengthening the location inertia of manufacturing), which are divided into three main groups - capital intensity, complexity of value chain and business sophistication. Keep-factors, represented by six financial indicators, were examined on the company level. The sample covers 692 Czech manufacturing companies (foreign owned) with one hundred or more employees. The main goal is to identify regions threatened by delocalization, which is caused by high-level concentration of "footloose" companies.

on job performance among employees from the manufacturing industry. Methodology: The data is analyzed through a survey (questionnaire) from 152 employees in one of the manufacturing companies in Penang, Malaysia. Hypotheses for all direct effects between the predictors (eg. interpersonal communication and task design) and criterion (job performance) are tested using regression analysis.  Result: Results presented that employees in this company have a high level of job performance (µ = 3.70); interpersonal communication (µ =3.64) and task design (µ =3.66). Also, positive correlations are found between employees’ performance and interpersonal communication (r=.53, p=.00) and task design (r=.54, p=.00). Implications: Thus, this research provided a fruitful knowledge regarding the level of employees’ performance as well as their internal communication and task design; among employees in one of the manufacturing company in Malaysia.
