Strategic planning documents are "key sites to institutional discourse" and reflect the public face of the library. This research explores the extent to which Neoliberal discourse permeates the strategic plans of three Canadian academic libraries, and examines how they are responding to global economic and political pressures. Through content analysis, the tension between libraries as a public good versus libraries as commodity is examined. Within this context, the disconnect between librarian core values and changing institutional values is also explored.Les documents de planification stratégique sont des « sites clés pour tout discours institutionnel » et reflètent le visage public d’une bibliothèque. Cette recherche tente de prendre la mesure dans laquelle le discours néolibéral imprègne les documents de planification stratégique de trois bibliothèques universitaires canadiennes, et examine comment ces institutions répondent à la montée et à la diversification des pressions économiques et politiques mondiales. En utilisant l'analyse de contenu et un regard critique, cette recherche exploratoire examine la tension entre la conception de la bibliothèque comme bien public et sa conception comme produit de marchandisation.

Abstract. Background: In German-speaking countries, suicide experts recommend not using the suicide referents Freitod and Selbstmord, as their associative meanings relate to problematic concepts such as free will and crime. Aims: To investigate which terms – the neutral and recommended Suizid or Freitod and Selbstmord – have dominated news coverage and to reveal what terms the public actually used. Method: A retrospective database study was undertaken on data from the period 2004–2016. First, we investigated how frequently the terms were used in news coverage via an automated content analysis. Second, we investigated how often individuals used the terms for information-seeking via Google's search engine, since it can be used as an indicator of the popularity of a given term within a given period. Results: Analyses revealed that Selbstmord was the most frequently used term in the news and by the public. Importantly, the use of Suizid increased in both datasets, nearly approaching the Selbstmord level in the later years. Although on a low level, the highly problematic term Freitod has also been in regular use. Conclusion: Media interventions should continue trying to increase journalists' awareness so that they use appropriate terms when reporting on suicide.

Objective – To determine whether and how Danish university and higher education students use public libraries for study purposes. Design – Online survey. Setting – Post-secondary students in Denmark. Subjects – 1,575 students in university-level programs or other higher education programs (vocational three-to-four-year programs) in Denmark. Methods – A sample of students was drawn from the national database of students by selecting every student born on the 15th of every month (approximately 4,900 students). A letter describing the study and with an invitation to fill out an online questionnaire was sent to all students in the sample. There were 1,694 valid responses (approximately 35% response rate). Students following short vocational programs were deemed to be under-represented and these subjects were omitted from the analysis of this report, which reflects the response of 1,575 students. The online questionnaire gathered demographic details (gender, age, educational institution, study topic, study year, geographical location, access to the Internet, etc.) and used 110 questions or statements to gather information about student information-seeking behaviour related to study purposes. These included use of the physical library and satisfaction with services, use of search engines, awareness and use of library Web-based services, study behaviour, and participation in information literacy activities. Main results – For the purposes of this study, “academic library is used as a generic term covering university libraries, research libraries, educational libraries and all other kind of libraries outside the field of public libraries” (p. 278). The survey results confirmed many of the previous international reports of student information-seeking behaviour: 85% of students use the academic library for study purposes; fewer than 10% of all students are able to cope without any library use; students in technology and engineering, the sciences and arts, architecture and music have a higher rate of non-use of their academic libraries; a large percentage of students access the electronic resources from home; the physical library is still considered important to students; Google is used extensively and is nearly the exclusive choice for search engine. The public library is used for study purposes by about 58 percent of all students with the highest use (76%) by students in higher education institutions (HEI); students of education, social topics and psychology are very frequent public library users. Female students in HEI were the most frequent users of the public library independent of study subject or year, or any other demographic variable. Seven per cent of students rely exclusively on the public library for study purposes and first-year HEI students in the subject areas of education, social topics and psychology are over-represented in this group (which additionally has less Internet access from home than the other students). Students perceive nearly all aspects of service in the academic library as superior; HEI students rate ambience, electronic resources and speed of inter-library loan provision in the public library as higher than the academic. University students give a low rating to the collections of public library, although the students use the public library principally to supplement the collections available in their academic libraries. Another high use of public libraries by HEI students is for inter-library loans placed through the national resource sharing system. Public library reference services are used often by only one per cent of students and only two per cent use the public library on a regular basis for “study related group activities.” Conclusion – Students use physical libraries to a great extent to support their studies and students have embraced digital access to collections, especially access from home. Google is the most heavily used search engine and is used by nearly all students; use of Google complements and supplements library use. Nearly 60% of all students use public libraries for study purposes and to supplement the collections of their academic library, but they find that the public library collections are insufficient to meet their needs. The inter-library loan policies of public libraries are more lenient and accommodating to student needs and may drive the high use of public libraries. Students form a large constituency of the public library user population and they generally rate most aspects of service as substandard to those of academic libraries. There is a call for review of the public library’s role in meeting the information needs of students, and in particular, those of HEI programs who are most dependent on the public library.

<em>Institution identity is a brief statement of the institution to the public, reflecting institutional values that can be seen from symbols, behavior and communication. The results of initial observations and interviews, SMA Negeri 3 Banjarmasin does not understand their values and identities. The porpose of this research is to understand the cultural values of the institutions that shape the identity of SMA Negeri 3 Banjarmasin. This research uses content analysis and a cultural approach to understanding the values that shape the identity of SMA 3 Banjarmasin and will be carried out at SMA 3 Banjarmasin, data collection will be done by observation, interview and documentation. The results of this study are visually the cultural values of institutions that shape the identity of SMA Negeri 3 Banjarmasin based on the vision of the school, the values are faith and piety, noble character, intelligent, skill, loving the environment. These 5 values are the core of the school culture that can be visually seen in various activities and programs that affect all internal aspects such as behavior, ways of communication, work environment, daily activities of all member of SMA Negeri 3 Banjarmasin, it forms a habit and culture so that it becomes part of the identity of SMA Negeri 3 Banjarmasin.</em>

The paper outlines the challenges which are very dominant and posing threat for the existence of academic libraries and suitable strategies requires to be made by the libraries and librarians to meet the expectations and information need of their existing and potential clienteles.

Abstract Introduction Reducing the global prevalence of severe, avoidable medication-related harm (MRH) by 50% by the end of 2022 is the WHO’s third global patient safety challenge [1]. MRH is reported frequently in the academic literature, with increasing age being a key risk factor. The WHO have highlighted the need to improve public health literacy and knowledge about medications. Little is known about the frequency and nature of Irish newspaper reports about MRH. This study sought to address this gap and to examine reporting during the calendar years 2019 and 2009. Methods In this mixed-methods study, LexisNexis® [2], an online newspaper archive database, was searched for newspaper articles reporting on MRH, published in the Republic of Ireland during the calendar years 2019 and 2009. The search strategy focussed on “medication” AND “harm” AND “patient”. Quantitative data extraction aimed to describe the frequency (by count of articles) of reporting of MRH and the nature by describing the publishing newspaper titles and the reported details of: drug class(es), demographics (age or life stage, gender) of those experiencing harm and the severity of harm. Qualitatively, a systematic content analysis, using inductive coding is ongoing and will be reported separately. Research ethics committee approval for this study is not required because this is an analysis of material in the public domain. Results In total, 7098 newspaper articles were identified through database searching for 2019 (n=3217) and 2009 (n=3881). To date, 54% (3867: n=3217, 45% 2019, n=650, 9% 2009) of these were screened, of which 63 newspaper articles (n=44 2019, n=19 2009) were included and quantitative data were extracted. Within these 63 articles, 71 cases of individual people experiencing MRH were reported (52 in 2019 and 19 in 2009). The newspapers most commonly reporting MRH were Irish Daily Mail (31/63: 27 in 2019 and 4 in 2009) and Irish Times (17/63:9 in 2019 and 8 in 2009). Drug classes most frequently reported as causing MRH were central nervous system drugs (antiepileptics n=10, opioid analgesics n=5, antidepressants n=9, and anxiolytics n=1), cancer chemotherapy (23 cases) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (n=3). MRH was reported as being fatal (13 /71:8 in 2019 and 5 in 2009) and non-fatal (58/71), with seven cases (5 in 2019 and 2 in 2009) of permanent harm. Among the 71 individual cases of MRH, the majority were adults aged 18–64 years (n=36), children (n=7), older adults (n=8), foetus (n=3) and newborn (n=1), while the remainder did not report the person’s age. Conclusion MRH is frequently reported to the public through Irish newspapers. The study is limited by focus on newsprint media with the exclusion of other forms of digital or social media and restriction to two calendar years in a single country, which likely stifles the generalisability of findings to other contexts. Future work could explore this issue across a wider range of media platforms and examine changes in reporting over time. The study findings may support an agenda to improve the general public's exposure to information and knowledge of MRH and medication safety. References 1. Despite the popularity of religion in African settings such as Ghana, reports of moral decline abound. This article reviews traditional, mission, and Christian theological perspectives of morality in Ghana. Using interviews, surveys, and content analysis of vehicle slogans, it examines what Ghanaians today consider to be values in terms of virtues and vices. It explores implications for Christian mission involvement in shaping morality in education and the public sphere.

A Review of: Brown, Cecilia M. and Ortega, Lina. “Information-Seeking Behavior of Physical Science Librarians: Does Research Inform Practice?” College & Research Libraries (2005). 66:231-47. Objective – As part of a larger study exploring the information environments of physical science librarians (Ortega & Brown), the authors’ overall objective for this study is to profile physical science librarians’ information behaviours. The authors’ two-part hypothesis was that first, peer-reviewed journals would be preferred over all other sources for research dissemination, resembling the preferences of scientists, and second, that peer-to-peer consultation would predominate for practice-oriented decisions. Design – Mixed methods: survey questionnaire followed by citation and content analysis. Setting – Five internationally disseminated professional association electronic mailing lists whose readership comprised those with interests in science librarianship: the American Library Association (ALA) Science and Technology Section; the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIST) Science and Technology Information Special Interest Group; the Special Library Association (SLA) Chemistry Division and its Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics Division; and the American Geological Institute Geoscience Information Society. Subjects – Seventy-two physical science librarians voluntarily responding to an online survey. Methods – A questionnaire was distributed to inquire about physical science librarians’ professional reading practices as well as their perceptions about the applicability of research to their work. Participants were asked to rank preferences among 11 resource types as sources supporting daily business, including personal communication, conference attendance, electronic mailing lists, and scholarly journals. Differences between the mean rankings of preferences were tested for significance by applying the Friedman test with p>0.0005. Journals identified most frequently were analyzed using the Institute for Scientific Information’s (ISI) Web of Science index and Ulrich’s Periodical Index to measure proportions of research and non-research citations, as well as the general topic areas covered by the journals. Next, content analysis was performed for the years 1995, 1997, and 2000 in order to characterize research methodologies used in the previously identified journals according to a previously tested schema (Buscha & Harter). Results from this portion of the study were compared with participants’ responses about journal usage. Main Results – Librarians reported using personal communication (both face-to-face and electronic mailing lists) more frequently as a means of information gathering than professional journals, Web sites, conferences, trade publications, monographs, or ‘other’ resources. Variations in responses appeared to correlate with years in the profession and in the respondents’ time in their current positions, although there are indications that the importance of all information resources to practice and research declines over time. The relative importance of resources is also shown in time spent reading journal literature, less than 5 hours per week for 86% of participants. Conclusion – For the first hypothesis, the authors found that unlike scientists, survey participants did not prefer research publications as vehicles for dissemination of their research results. For the second, librarians ranked peer-reviewed journals third in preference after personal communication and electronic mailing lists as sources of information supporting daily practice, supporting the second hypothesis that respondents would emulate the information use practices of mathematicians.

Abstract – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the user agreements of makerspaces in public and academic libraries. User agreements, also known as maker agreements, user forms and liability forms, can be very important documents between library patrons, staff and faculty. User agreements are similar to the earlier creation of acceptable use policies for technology use in libraries. The author of this study will delve into the user agreements created for public and academic libraries across the USA. Design/methodology/approach – The researcher used content analysis to investigate 24 different user agreements written for public and academic library makerspaces. NVivo qualitative data analysis software was integrated into this research to aid in the breakdown of commonalities across terms, themes and purpose within the user agreements. Findings – Although makerspaces are a very exciting topic in the field of library science at this time, the implementation of a maker learning space is still new to many libraries. Creating a user agreement for a makerspace is newer still. Most user agreements in this study were six months to a year old. Some consistencies found across makerspace user agreements include liability waivers, permissions for minors, safety, copyright and technology replacement costs. Originality/value – At this time, most publications on makerspaces are held in the realm of popular publications (blogs, magazines, zines, etc.). The body of peer-reviewed and scholarly research on makerspaces is growing. Makerspace user agreements are new to this growing field of interest, and a content analysis of these documents will pave the way for the writing of future forms.
