The objective of this study is determining the mixing and compaction temperature of the modified asphalt mixture. Results of binder tests showed that the addition of 3% SBS  to control asphalt (PG 64-16) would achieve the desired performance level (PG 76-16) a performance grade that fits our climate with traffic loads. When using 5% SBS the performance grade of binder increased three grades (PG 82-16) and when increasing SBS content to 8% the performance grade increased four grades (PG 88-16). At shear rate of 500 (s-1), the modified asphalt viscosity can be obtained at different temperatures and the viscosity temperature curve can be achieved. As a result, the mixing and compaction temperature of modified asphalt can be determined to reach 0.17 ± 0.02 Pa.s and 0.28 ± 0.03 Pa.s for mixing and compaction, respectively. It is noted that SBS modified reached a viscosity of 3 Pa.s when 8 % additive. Additive contents above these values may not be suitable for good workability and pump ability according to Superpave specifications. While addition of 5% SBS with control asphalt, more than 3.7times at 135°C Increase the viscosity. Marshall Stability test indicated that the strength for the SBS specimens increases as compared to the conventional specimens. An increase of about 39%, 74%, 102%, was observed with 3%SBS 5%SBS 8%SBS modified binders, respectively. The Marshall test results for 8%SBS binders required compaction temperatures above 175°C need to keep up quality of HMA item while limiting natural effect amid development, these proposals are unsatisfactory Modified mixtures the 5% SBS modification was determined to be the maximum useful content. The Superpave method to estimate mixing and compaction temperatures show are not practical for use with modified binders. Also,  it is observed that good agreement values between the average Marshall compaction temperature and the High Shear Viscosity Method (HSRV) and   lower than Superpave methods Where the decline ranges from 15 ºC to 17 ºC.

However, flexible pavement has many disadvantages, such as early damage to the road surface after some time has passed by traffic so the road cannot reach the planned age. For this reason, a research was carried out to add hot asphalt mixture which aims to improve the quality of the mixture, the selected material is natural water hyacinth. The method used is trial and error with reference SNI 031737-1989. Variations used were 3%, 5%, and 7% of asphalt weight, the level of asphalt used was 4.48%. Of the 3 variations of the mixture used in Type I Asphalt Concrete Layer, the results obtained that the water hyacinth fiber content that has the best score and meet the specifications of SNI 03-1737- 1989 is the percentage of 7% obtained. from the calculation data using graphs and regression models where Marshall Stability is 889.73 Kg, VFWA (voids filled with asphalt) are equal to 65.97%, VIM (voids in mixtures) are equal to 1.757%, VMA (voids in mineral aggregates ) is equal to 20.30%, density 2.420 gr / cc, Flow 3.37 mm, and Marshall Quotient of 265.80 Kg / mm.Keywords : flexible pavement, water hyacinth fiber, Marshall test.

In order to analyze the characteristics of high modulus asphalt mixture dynamic modulus, Universal Testing Machine (UTM-25) was used for dynamic modulus test of three kinds of mixtures, which were PR Module modified asphalt mixture and PR PLAST.S modified asphalt mixture and virgin asphalt mixture, to investigate dynamic modulus and phase angle at different temperatures and frequencies. The results indicate that: the dynamic modulus order of the three asphalt mixtures is PR MODULE > PR PLAST.S > Virgin. PR MODULE asphalt mixture dynamic modulus is much larger than the other two.

In Indonesia, the road construction has experienced a fairly good development. From a wide range of road constructions, flexible pavement is the most chosen one because its characteristics: easy, fast, and efficient. However, flexible pavement has many weaknesses, for example the premature damage on the road surface after some time passed by the traffic so that the road cannot reach the planned age. For that, it is done a research to add a hot asphalt mixture material that aims to improve the quality of the mixture results. The selected ingredient is natural water hyacinth. The method used is trial and error with reference of SNI 03-1737-1989. Variations used are 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% of the asphalt weight, asphalt level used is 5.72 %. Of the 5 variations of mixture used on Type XI Asphalt Concrete Layer, it is obtained the result that the water hyacinth fiber level which has the best score and meet the specifications of SNI 03-1737-1989 is on the percentage of 6% which obtained from calculation data using graphs and regression model where Marshall Stability is equal to 644,46 Kg, flow 3,39 mm, VMA (voids in the mineral aggregate) is equal to 13,83 %, VFWA (voids filled with asphalt) is equal to 65,35%, VIM (voids in the mix) is equal to 2,52 %, density of 2.31 gr/cc, and Marshall Quotient of 164.03 Kg / mm.

In recent years, the use of nano materials for improving various mechanical and performance-related properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders has been growing rapidly. However, few researches investigated the effects of base binder and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) structure on rutting resistance of polymer-nanocomposite-modified asphalt mixtures. This study investigated the effect of polymer–nanocomposite modification, using two different penetration grade asphalt binders and two types of SBS, on rutting properties of asphalt mixtures. Rheological properties of modified binders, Marshall stability, resilient modulus, and rut depth in wheel-tracking tests were used to evaluate the rutting performance of the modified binders and mixtures. The results indicated that both base binder type and SBS structure had significant effect on rutting resistance of polymer-nanocomposite-modified asphalt mixtures.

In order to achieve the penetration method which could reflect the high temperature property of SBS modified asphalt, the paper presented the penetration test of SBS modified asphalt with different types and dosages of SBS modifier at three kinds of penetration weight and four different temperatures. Meanwhile, the high temperature performance of the SBS modified asphalt mixture was studied. It was found that penetration measured under current specification method (25oC, 100g, 5s) could not identify the difference of viscosity and high temperature property of different SBS modified asphalt. When the test conditions are revised to “penetration weight of 150 g, test temperature of 30oC, penetration time of 5s”, the penetration of different SBS modified asphalt measured by revised method could be used to evaluate the temperature susceptibility of SBS modified asphalt accurately and are closely related to the dynamic stability of mixture.

Asphalt modification by adding fiber powder of banana stem can be implemented to improve the performance of pure asphalt. Asphalt concrete binder course AC-BC is a flexible pavement layer that functions to distribute the load towards the foundation layer. So it really needs strength, durability and stability of the materials. For that, it is necessary to use asphalt modification with fiber powder of banana stem which is used as a binding material in AC-BC asphalt concrete mixture. The proper percentage of modified asphalt level will determine the optimum quality of an asphalt mixture. Asphalt concrete specimens were made in 3 (three) samples for each variation of asphalt level by 5%; 5.5%; 6%; 6.5%; and 7%. The asphalt optimum level in the mixture is carried out through volumetric investigation in the form of VMA, VIM, and VFB values and mechanical assessment in the form of stability, flow and Marshall Quetient. The results of data analysis found that the value of VIM, stability and MQ tend to decrease with increasing levels of modified asphalt. On the other hand the value of VMA, VFB and flow tend to rise with increasing levels of modified asphalt. However, from the five variations of asphalt levels obtained asphalt levels of 5% and 5.5% which meet all the specifications of AC-BC asphalt concrete specification. To determine the asphalt optimum level, the average of qualified asphalt level is taken. So that the asphalt concrete AC-BC will produce a better structural performance at 5.25% asphalt level with banana stem fiber powder on asphalt by 0.1%.

The problem of the quality of the asphalt mixture, especially on the surface layer, is a matter that really needs to be considered because a poor asphalt mixture will cause the surface layer on the road to be damaged quickly or not in accordance with the expected service period. This research was conducted to test the AC-WC mixture with added waste tires. The research methodology uses the Conventional Marshall method to obtain the characteristics of the AC-WC mixture and Marshall Immersion to obtain the Marshall Residual Stability value. The results show that the characteristics of the AC-WC mixture meet the 2018 Highways Specifications. The results of the Marshall Immersion test with an optimum 4% used tire content obtained a Marshall Stability value of 94.64% and the effect of adding used tire rubber will make the cavities in the mixture smaller thus the mixture can be resistant to water.

According to the relationship of the viscosity and temperature when the mixture reached Optimum compaction effect and the shear rate, the viscosity shear rate of the testing modified asphalt mixture, 60s-1 has been found. The test results show that the difference between the compaction temperature of the modified asphalt mixture and the compaction temperature under the condition of the best compaction effect is 5°C. It shows that the temperature is satisfied with the specific temperature during construction, so the determination method is workable.

Polymer modified binders have been used for long time to improve the quality of asphalt pavement. This study investigates the effect of crumb rubber and latex on the properties of bitumen binders. Crumb rubber and latex were added to the control 60/70 pen grade bitumen. Four different proportions of crumb rubber and latex were considered in this study: 0%, 4%, 6% and 8% by weight of bitumen binder. The effect of crumb rubber and latex were evaluated through standard penetration and softening point tests as well as dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test. Temperature ranges of 20°C - 40°C were used for the DSR rheological testing. The results showed that the addition of crumb rubber and latex leads to a promising improvement on the binder properties. A reduction in penetration and an increase in softening point temperature were observed with the addition of either crumb rubber or latex, this indicates improvement in stiffness and rutting resistance. The analysis on DSR results also show that the modified binders have good rutting resistance.

The use of modified asphalt binders has become much more common over the past two decades. Many types of modifier have been used in paving asphalts to enhance the performance of asphalt pavements in a wide range of climates and loading conditions. Among various asphalts binder modifiers, the recycled crumb rubber has been used very successfully for many years. Generally in production of CRM binder, mixing and compaction temperature is determined by measuring of binder viscosity. The ordinary method used for viscosity measurement of unmodified binder leads to a very high Mixing and Compaction Temperature (MCT) for CRM binder. The aims of this paper are to identify, develop and give some recommendations on a reliable laboratory approach for blending of CRM with binder, as well as introducing appropriate laboratory test methods for optimisation of MCT of crumb rubber modified binder asphalt.
