The relationship of bivariate data ordinarily measured using correlation coefficient. The most commonly used correlation coefficient is the Pearson correlation coefficient. This coefficient is well-known as the best coefficient for interval or ratio bivariate data with a linear relationship. Even though this coefficient is good under the mentioned condition, it also becomes very sensitive to a small departure from linearity. Usually, this is because of the existence of an outlier. For that reason, this paper provides new robust correlation coefficients which combine the elements of nonparametric technique from the Hodges Lehmann estimator and the parametric technique based on the Pearson correlation coefficient. This paper also introduces different scale estimators such as median and median absolute deviation (MADn) and denoted by rHL(med) and rHL(MADn) respectively. The performance of the proposed correlation coefficients is measured by the coefficient values and these values are also being compared to the Pearson correlation coefficient and several existing robust correlation coefficients. The results show that the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) with no doubt is very good under perfect data condition, but with only 10% outliers, it not only give poor correlation value but turns the direction of the relationship to negative. While the rHL(med) and rHL(MADn) offer the highest coefficient values and these values are robust to the existence of outliers by up to 30%. With very good performance under all data conditions yet simple in the calculation, the rHL(med) and rHL(MADn) is considered a good alternative to the r when need to deal with outliers. Keywords: correlation coefficient; Hodges Lehmann; median; median absolute deviation (MADn)

This article examines the relationship between learning and behavioural evaluation among religious officers in Malaysia after attending the Manual on HIV/AIDS in Islam Training Programmes organized by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM). The training programmes were implemented to deliver the most accurate and the latest information on HIV / AIDS as well as to train religious officers in Malaysia to address the issues among Muslims. The training programmes apply the theoretical and practical activities where participants had the opportunity to carry out outreach activities with People Living with HIV / AIDS (ODHA). Quantitative methods through questionnaires were used to obtain data. A total of 350 religious officers who had attended the training programmes were selected as respondents by simple random sampling technique. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between the learning and behavioural evaluation. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis found that there was a significant relationship between learning evaluation in terms of the information obtained from programmes’ contents and behaviour evaluation with r = 0.489 and sig = 0.000 (p <0.05) at the medium positive range.. While the relationship between learning evaluation in terms of the information obtained from outreach activities with behavioural evaluation showed a strong positive correlation with the strength values obtained were r = 0.539 and sig = 0.000 (p <0.05). This analysis shows that the information acquired through the training program Manual Islam and HIV / AIDS has been successful in changing the behaviour of religious officers’ awareness in terms of the role of dakwah to ODHA. The Pearson correlation coefficient squared, r2, is often used in the analysis of neural data to estimate the relationship between neural tuning curves. Yet this metric is biased by trial-to-trial variability: as trial-to-trial variability increases, measured correlation decreases. Major lines of research are confounded by this bias, including the study of invariance of neural tuning across conditions and the similarity of tuning across neurons. To address this, we extend the estimator, r̂2ER, developed for estimating model-to-neuron correlation to the neuron-to-neuron case. We compare the estimator to a prior method developed by Spearman, commonly used in other fields but widely overlooked in neuroscience, and find that our method has less bias. We then apply our estimator to the study of two forms of invariance and demonstrate how it avoids drastic confounds introduced by trial-to-trial variability.

The numbers of COVID-19 increase daily, both confirmed cases and deaths. All over the world, shock waves are felt with impacts on economies in general and the financial sector in particular. Aiming to assess the relationship between confirmed cases and deaths and the behaviour of stock markets, the authors perform a dynamic analysis, based on the Pearson correlation coefficient, for 10 of the most affected countries in the world. As expected, they find evidence that the number of COVID-19 cases had a negative effect on stock markets, and that the current second wave is penalizing them. They also find that deaths have a more relevant impact than the number of confirmed cases.
