Some researchers have researched to explore the effects of gender differences on learning outcomes. However, the interrelatedness of gender differences to attitudes and motivation needs to explore and investigate more. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the students' attitudes toward the English language and their motivation toward English language teaching based on gender differences in a state junior high school in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. There were 38 male and 32 female students who participated in this research. This research used a survey adapted from the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) and interviews in collecting the data. The researchers employed descriptive statistics and MANOVA for quantitative data and the Miles and Huberman model for qualitative data analysis. The findings showed a significant difference and effect of gender differences on the students' attitudes and motivation. Both male and female students revealed moderately high attitudes and motivation. However, female students showed a higher average score of the survey result. Less practice in real-life communication and limited exposure was the reason why the male students' have lower results in their attitudes and motivation toward English learning. Thus, providing authentic materials and exposure became some of the key points to improve meaningful learning experiences.

This study investigated the English students’ attitudes of IAIN Padangsidimpuan towards both English language teaching in terms of (a) language-centered, (b) learner-centered, and (c) learning-centered method; and learning English in terms of scales (a) attitudes toward long-term English learning, (b) interest in culture and communication, (c) perception about studying in school context, (d) images associated with English, (e) English learning activities, (f) exposure to English outside school, (g) self-rated four English skills, (h) self-reported academic English grade, and (i) identification of English role models. The data were obtained by questionnaire and interview from 10 selected students in which 4 male and 6 female students in 7th semester and were analyzed by steps provided by Gay, L.R and Airasian (1996). The result showed:  first, English students’ attitudes towards English language teaching had been found highly onlearning-centered method, followed by learner-centered method in second range, and almost negative view in language-centered method.Second, English students’ attitudes towards English language learningwere positivein scales; long-term English learning, interest in communication, and images associated with English.  Third, role of students’ gender on English language learning were not found. Reasons for this statement are (i) status of English as international language and (ii) equalization of getting education for male and female. The study sought to find out the significant relationship between self-esteem and the English learning achievement of students at SMU Advent Klabat Manado and to know whether it was high or low. Furthermore, this study was also to find out whether there is significant difference between males and females in their level of self-esteem. The subjects of this study were the second-year students of SMU Advent Klabat Manado. There were 50 students who were chosen randomly to become the sample. They were 26 female students and 24 male students. The data were obtained from a self-constructed questionnaire based on Coopersmith’s concept of self-esteem. To answer the main problem of this study, the Pearson r Product Moment Coefficient Correlation formula was used. The result indicated that there is significant relationship between self-esteem and the English learning achievement of students at SMU Advent Klabat Manado. Therefore, the null hypothesis which said there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and the English learning achievement of students at SMU Advent Klabat Manado, was rejected. Moreover, the results showed a significant difference between males and females in their level of self-esteem. It was recommended that English teachers at SMU Advent Klabat Manado should explore more possibilities of serving the students in learning English particularly by cultivating their self-esteem, for it will significantly contributed to their achievement in English. Moreover, English teachers of SMU Advent Klabat Manado should treat the male and female students differently. Since the female students have higher self-esteem than the male, so male, especially, should be encouraged to cultivate their self-esteem so they will gain higher achievement in English. On the other hand, students need to appreciate themselves, and their own ability as the gift of God, for the self-esteem they have contributed to or increase their ability to learn the English language. A study with a broader sample should be done for further study using a similar methodology and instrumentation. Furthermore, future research should replicate this study using other levels such as elementary, junior high school, and college.   Key words: Self-esteem, English learning, Achievement

A staple issue in English language teaching is the fact that individual students in formal classrooms usually have minimal opportunity to speak due to large class sizes. Recent studies have vouched language laboratories to be capable of overcoming this barrier. As far as the researchers know, no study has launched a wide investigation whether a language laboratory exists and is used to optimise the English learning in the Islamic schools in Majene, Indonesia. This research applies descriptive quantitative design, involving 22 Islamic schools in the level of junior high school. 22 English teachers that represents all the schools filled a questionnaire to provide the data. It is found that the Islamic schools at Majene do not yet have a language laboratory even though the English teachers consider it important. Its absence is influenced by the lack of support from leaders. As a result, listening practice activities are rarely carried out. English teachers only carry out practical activities in the classroom with limited tools and materials. This research illuminates a concern for policy makers in the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the field of Islamic school education and the principals to hold a language laboratory at Islamic Schools. To improve English learning activities, the existence of a language laboratory in Islamic schools is matter, so that students at Islamic schools can show their quality in foreign language mastery and compete with others.

The present study is aimed at assessing the preferences of ninth standard students in various situations of situational approach of English language teaching. All the ninth standard students studying in the high and higher secondary schools in Thanjavur district form the population of the study. 200 ninth standard students have chosen randomly to form the sample of the study. Percentage analysis was the only statistical technique adopted to compute the number of students preferring each situation. A rating scale for student’s preference towards different situations was prepared and validated by the researcher to collect data. The percentage analysis of the collected data reveals that real life situations are the most preferred situation from the situational approach by ninth standard students; whereas verbal situation is the least preferred by them. Male students, Students from rural area, Students from government and aided schools have more preference towards real life situations; whereas female students, Students from urban area, Students from private schools shown preference towards classroom situations. Without any difference, all the category of students prefers verbal situations as the least effective situations of situational approach of teaching learning process. These findings may be handy in making aware of teachers to use various situations to teach language in the classrooms.

Instructing listening comprehension to EFL students need good plannings. Authentic listening materials as a strategic teaching media are best utilized by English instructors to facilitate the EFL students’ listening comprehension in classrooms and language laboratory. Applying authentic listening materials as teaching media in listening practice activites are challenged to bridge EFL students and not only enhancing their listening skill but also improving and developing their knowledge of the real life, culture, and social affairs of English native speakers.The source of authentic listening materials applied in the subject class are mostly taken from youtube.com. A popular open source website which provide online videos. The aim of the study was to find out EFL students’ attitudes and perceptions when and after using the authentic videos in an EFL listening class. The participants of the study were the second semester EFL students of English Language Teaching department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro Indonesia. The data were gathered from a questionnaire and open interviews. It is found out that most of EFL students who were instructed by the authentic videos show positive attitudes and have good perceptions in utilizing youtube videos as one of the alternative authentic materials in comprehending English utterances.

This article presents the results of the study investigating the relationship between the students’ attitudes towards English and their English achievements in bilingual and regular classes and investigating the differences. The study was conducted in a junior high school in Manado. There are 30 Year VIII students in each bilingual class and each regular class. The results are as follows. First, there is a significant correlation between the students’ attitudes towards English and their achievements. Second, there is a significant difference in their English achievements between bilingual class students and regular students. Third, female students have higher English achievements than male students. Bilingual class students have more positive attitudes and higher English learning achievements than regular class students.

The advancement of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) has significantly affected English language teaching, such as the utilization of miscellaneous applications, social media and other digital platforms facilitating the learners to invigorate their language skills, notably L2/FL writing context. However, insufficient attention has been addressed to the contributions of employing storybird to the learners’ narrative writing activities. To fill this void, this study aimed at delineating the contributions of employing storybird to the Indonesian EFL learners’ narrative writing activities. Three Indonesian junior high school learners participated as research participants. The data were gathered through semi-structured interview and analyzed with Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The findings designated that storybird (1) generated ideas for writing a story (2) facilitated to construct generic structure of English narrative texts (3) considered lexicogrammatical features of English narrative texts (4) produced English narrative texts joyfully and (5) wrote English narrative texts actively. Given these facts, storybird enables the learners to think creatively, provides them enjoyable learning experiences, brings their abstract thoughts to real life and guide them to communicate and collaborate effectively. This research is aimed at describing activities used to make the students enthusiastic to participate in English learning activities. It is a descriptive qualitative study involving four English teachers from two schools that have different characteristics in terms of school management. The first school is under Ministry of National Education (MONE) and another is under Ministry of Religion Affairs (MORA). The data gained are from observation, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), in-depth interview, and documentation. The findings of this research shows that the students were more delighted in learning when the teacher implemented exciting learning activities. Teachers used activities to make the students enthusiastic to participate in English learning activities and to make them spurred in learning English. The teacher triggered the students by implementing activities such as Near Peer Role Model (NPRM), Mingling Games and Tiered. As a result, students become spurred because the social interaction is involved.

Rapid technological development and the growth of educators’ and students’ digital skills have allowed e-textbooks to take root in different school subjects’ pedagogical practices. This article’s aim is to compare two e-textbooks – A Guide for Exploring City Texts (Berra (Burr), 2020) and Linguistic Landscapes in English Language Teaching: A Pedagogical Guidebook (Solmaz & Przymus, 2021) – in terms of their technological and pedagogical frameworks and to discuss the benefits and disadvantages of using a language e-textbook which heavily utilizes linguistic landscape signs. The comparison shows that the e-textbooks’ main technological advantages are hyperlinking, bookmarking, highlighting, annotating, and searching. Their content uncovers pedagogical concepts they both share: (1) authenticity, (2) resourcefulness, (3) connectivism, (4) a focus on text genres. Language in both textbooks is understood in the context of semiotic resources, so knowledge and skills in one language are inextricably linked to awareness of other languages, semiotic consciousness, and multiliteracies. The learning process in both e-textbooks is designed in a way that students interactively create and contribute knowledge and apply them in various real-life situations. There are a few drawbacks of the e-textbooks. First, their current technological do not allow for changing the order, length, or content of chapters, subchapters, or sections. Second, a lack of space for writing answers in e-textbooks, which can be frustrating for students. Third, none of the e-textbooks provides content for the entire study year/course, language level, or national subject standard.

This study aims to analyze the differences and also the relationship between attitudes and self-efficacy of students in science lessons. This research is important because in science lessons the teacher must know the attitudes and self-efficacy of students because they affect the learning process. This type of research is quantitative with comparative type. The number of respondents used as a sample is 74 students. The data collection technique used simple random sampling. The results of the study using the T test were that there were significant differences in the attitudes and self-efficacy of students in science lessons, both female students and male students. The results of the correlation test between students' attitudes and self-efficacy towards science subjects in grade 8A showed that the two variables (attitude and self-efficacy) were related. And the results of the correlation test in class 8B showed that the two variables (attitude and self-efficacy) were related. The urgency of this research is that teachers can find out the differences in attitudes and self-efficacy between male and female students. The novelty of this research compared to previous research is that it uses Attitude and self-efficacy variables, with different indicators from previous research.
