The occurrence of forest fire in Jambi can be considered as an annual phenomenon. It happenes almost every year in every type of land uses, including industrial timber plantation area of PT Wirakarya Sakti. The drivers of fire are a combination between natural factors and an anthropogenic factor, which in this case is traditional land preparation activity conducted by local farmer. To maintain their source of livelihoods, farmers convert forest land into seasonal agricultural land (ladang) using ‘slash and burn’ method. This activity occures along with the changes in social economic condition. Currently, although this circumstance has existed for a long time, availability of information regarding forest fire-prone area especially in industrial timber plantation is really minutes. Based on this condition, this study aims to model and develop spatial information on the vulnerability forest fire in industrial timber plantation (HTI) area. The specific objectives are: 1) To identify biophysical factors that affect of forest fire, 2) To identify the significance of community activities and land tenure factors to forest fires event in the area, 3) To analyze communities motivations and actions in regards to forest fire events, and 4) To analyze synergy between actual land use with HTI Spatial Planning (RTR-HTI). The results of using logistic regression analysis showed that the most significance biophysical variable are soil type and rainfall, while on the anthropogenic variable are the distance from land and the distancefrom road. Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis suggested that community motivations and actions are affected by social indicators. Based on these facts, spatial analysis using GIS was conducted. The result showed that the value of land use suitable (LUS) was 88.1% (218,289 ha) and not suitable was 11.9% (29,589 ha) from the land allocation of RTR-HTI. Using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the relative importance weight for each factor was derivied to be included in hazard model. The hazard map showed that fire hazard can be classified into high category (118,925 ha), moderate category (175,272ha) and low category (11,369 ha). Forest fires resulted from human activities such as land preparation by using fire. Dry season, forest fire hazard, low awareness of local communities as well as limited infrastructure for fire control are all the factors related to the occurrence of forest fires. The objectives of this research is to identify forest fire causes in Gunung Walat Educational Forest. Forest fire in Gunung Walat Educational Forest over the last five years (2011-2015) occurred in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Forest fire in 2015 had the highest frequency that is three times with the area burnt reached 8.4 ha. The rainfall in Cibadak District is relatively high but it contain some months with the low rainfall. There is a correlation of some parameters that analyzed between characteristic of respondent with the occurrence of forest fire. Characteristic of respondent such as employment, income and distance to forest in Batununggal village showed a positive correlation to the forest fire occurrence. Worldwide urban areas are having increasing influence over the surrounding landscape. Peri-urban regions of the world are facing challenges which results from sprawl with increasing problems of social segregation, wasted land and greater distance to work. This study seeks to examine the trends in land use dynamics, urban sprawl and associated development implications in the Bamenda Municipalities from 1996 to 2018. The study made use of the survey, historical and correlational research designs. The purposive and snowball techniques were used to collect data. Spatiotemporal analyses were carried out on Landsat Images for 1996, 2008, and 2018 obtained from Earth Explorer, Erdas Image 2014 and changes detected from the maps digitized. The SPSS version 21 and MS Excel 2016 were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data. The former employed the Pearson correlation analysis. Analysis of land use/land cover change detection reveals that built-up area has increased significantly from 1996 to 2018 at the detriment of forest, wetland and agricultural land at different rates within each municipality. These changes have led to invasion of risk zones, high land values, uncoordinated, uncontrolled and unplanned urban growth. The study suggests that proactive planning, use of GIS to monitor land use activities, effective implementation of existing town planning norms and building regulations, are invaluable strategies to sustainably manage urban growth in Bamenda.

The article outlines the main trends in the spatial development of agricultural land use and land tenure in the Non-Chernozem Economic Zone of the European part of Russia, which are summarized in several groups; worldwide trends, the most significant changes in countries, production and market phenomena, changes in the forms and types of ownership and land management. An assessment of the main problems that prevent the spatial development of agricultural land use is considered in the article paying the special attention to the areas unfavorable for agricultural production. The authors describe the existing problems in the field of land relations and administration of agricultural lands.

Two of the main remote sensing data resources for forest fire detection have significant drawbacks: geostationary Earth Observation (EO) satellites have high temporal resolution but low spatial resolution, whereas Polar-orbiting systems have high spatial resolution but low temporal resolution. Therefore, the existing forest fire detection algorithms that are based on a single one of these two systems have only exploited temporal or spatial information independently. There are no approaches yet that have effectively merged spatial and temporal characteristics to detect forest fires. This paper fills this gap by presenting a spatiotemporal contextual model (STCM) that fully exploits geostationary data’s spatial and temporal dimensions based on the data from Himawari-8 Satellite. We used an improved robust fitting algorithm to model each pixel’s diurnal temperature cycles (DTC) in the middle and long infrared bands. For each pixel, a Kalman filter was used to blend the DTC to estimate the true background brightness temperature. Subsequently, we utilized the Otsu method to identify the fire after using an MVC (maximum value month composite of NDVI) threshold to test which areas have enough fuel to support such events. Finally, we used a continuous timeslot test to correct the fire detection results. The proposed algorithm was applied to four fire cases in East Asia and Australia in 2016. A comparison of detection results between MODIS Terra and Aqua active fire products (MOD14 and MYD14) demonstrated that the proposed algorithm from this paper effectively analyzed the spatiotemporal information contained in multi-temporal remotely sensed data. In addition, this new forest fire detection method can lead to higher detection accuracy than the traditional contextual and temporal algorithms. By developing algorithms that are based on AHI measurements to meet the requirement to detect forest fires promptly and accurately, this paper assists both emergency responders and the general public to mitigate the damage of forest fires.

Reasonable forest fire management measures can effectively reduce the losses caused by forest fires and forest fire driving factors and their impacts are important aspects that should be considered in forest fire management. We used the random forest model and MODIS Global Fire Atlas dataset (2010~2016) to analyse the impacts of climate, topographic, vegetation and socioeconomic variables on forest fire occurrence in six geographical regions in China. The results show clear regional differences in the forest fire driving factors and their impacts in China. Climate variables are the forest fire driving factors in all regions of China, vegetation variable is the forest fire driving factor in all other regions except the Northwest region and topographic variables and socioeconomic variables are only the driving factors of forest fires in a few regions (Northwest and Southwest regions). The model predictive capability is good: the AUC values are between 0.830 and 0.975, and the prediction accuracy is between 70.0% and 91.4%. High fire hazard areas are concentrated in the Northeast region, Southwest region and East China region. This research will aid in providing a national-scale understanding of forest fire driving factors and fire hazard distribution in China and help policymakers to design fire management strategies to reduce potential fire hazards.

Wildfires are the most common disturbances in Mediterranean forest ecosystems that cause significant emissions of greenhouse gases as a result of biomass burning. Despite this, there is reasonably high uncertainty regarding the actual fraction of burnt biomass and the related CO2 and non-CO2 gas emissions released during forest fires. The aim of this paper is to compare existing methodologies adopted in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports of five of the most fire-affected countries of southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, France) with those proposed in the literature, to operationally estimate forest fire emissions, and to discuss current perspectives on reducing uncertainties in reporting activities for the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. Five selected approaches have been experimentally applied for the estimation of burnt biomass in forest fire events that occurred in Italy in the period 2008–2010. Approaches based on nominal rates of biomass loss can lead to an overly conservative value or, conversely, to underestimation of the fraction of burnt biomass. Uncertainties can be greatly reduced by an operational method able to assess inter-annual and local variability of fire effects on fire-affected forest types.

Forest fire hazard and risk mapping is an essential tool for planning and decision making regarding the prevention and suppression of forest fires,as well as fire management in general, as it allows the spatial visualization of areas with higher and lower ignition probability. This study aimed to develop a forest fire risk zoning map for the Vila Velha State Park and its surroundings (Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil), for the period of higher incidence of forest fires (from April to September) and for the period of lower incidence (from October to March). The following risk and hazard variables were identified: human presence, usage zones, topographical features, soil coverage and land use and meteorological conditions. Coefficients (0 to 5) reflecting the fire risk or hazard degree were allocated to each variable in order to construct the maps. The integration of these maps, through a weighting model, resulted in the final risk mapping. The very high and extreme risk classes represented about 38% of the area for both periods. The forest fire risk mapping spatially represented the levels of fire risk in the area, allowing the managers to identify the priority sectors for preventive actions in both fire seasons.

Purpose. The aim of the article is determining the conditions of rational use of agricultural land conditions and substantiation of measures to optimize the distribution and rational use of agricultural land. Methodology of research. General scientific and special methods are used to achieve this goal: the dialectical method of scientific knowledge – to consider the essence of the rational use of land and its protection; synthesis – to clarify the relationship between the subjects of land relations; analysis – to assess the constituent elements of agricultural land; graphic – for visual display of the obtained results; abstract and logical method – for the formation of conclusions and research proposals. Findings. The state and rational use of land in the region and the state are studied. The structure of agricultural lands in Ivano-Frankivsk region and Ukraine is analysed. The main ecological and economic aspects of land tenure and land use in agriculture are described, including changes in land relations. The main reasons that caused the negative trends of rational use and protection of land in agriculture are identified. Measures have been developed for the rational use of land in the economic activity of land and its protection. Originality. Approaches to the interpretation of the concept of “rational use of land” are systematized and generalized. Measures on rational use of agricultural lands in economic activity are offered, namely: creation and realization of innovative scientific and technical programs in the field of rational use of lands and their protection; improving the regulatory framework in the field of land relations; development of a mechanism for financing programs; introduction of environmentally friendly ways of agricultural production, etc. Practical value. The expediency of studying and forming the conditions of rational use of agricultural lands is proved. The results of the study can be used by agricultural enterprises in conducting business activities. Land use change generally involves transformation in allocating land resources from one to another use. The purpose of this study is (1) to identify the problem of conversion of agricultural land, especially paddy fields (2) to analyze spatial patterns and influencing factors, and (3) to analyze policies related to conversion of agricultural land. This study uses a qualitative approach, data collection using interview techniques, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is qualitative descriptive. The study was conducted in Brebes Regency, Central Java. The conclusion of this study is 1) the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural use is strongly influenced by the dynamics of very rapid urban growth, both seen from demographic, economic and physical aspects. 2) The spatial pattern of conversion of paddy fields is influenced by socio-economic factors, including urban population growth, growth and shifts in economic structure, growth of land-use agricultural households and changes in land tenure. 3) The policy related to controlling the conversion of agricultural land is the consistency of the implementation of the RTRW as a key to preventing the conversion of agricultural land to non-agriculture.
