Due to a disparity in Human Development Index (HDI) among regencies and cities in Special Region of Yogyakarta, this study aimed to examine whether HDI convergence occurred in this province. The data were sourced from the Statistics of Special Region of Yogyakarta, including HDI, infrastructure, and gross regional domestic product in four regencies and one city from 2001 to 2019. The infrastructure consists of installed electricity, education, and health facilities. The results showed an absence of HDI convergence between regions in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Furthermore, HDI growth in the impoverished region was slower than in leading ones, resulting in a gap. The infrastructure gap made the impoverished region unable to catch up with leading ones, causing an HDI divergence. In contrast, Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) has no impact on HDI. Therefore, the government needs to improve infrastructure in disadvantaged areas to increase HDI.

This research aims to determine the factors affecting human development index (HDI) in regency/city in Indonesia. Based on data from BPS (Statistics Indonesia), human development index (HDI) of each regency/city in Indonesia has a heterogeneous achievement value from the low, middle to high categories of HDI. This indicates that there are still underdeveloped areas and inequality in human development in Indonesia. Meanwhile, regional government expenditure on education, health, and economic functions tends to increase considerably each year. The methods used were panel data regressions with time series data from 2011-2017 and cross section data of 465 regencies/cities in Indonesia. Econometrics results show variables that have significant positive effect on HDI, which are regional government expenditure on education function, health function, economic function, GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product), education infrastructure (number of junior high schools), health infrastructure (number of community health center), and BPK (The Audit Board of Indonesia) opinion. While poverty has negative effect, infrastructure (road length) has no effect. To avoid inequality from affecting human development in Indonesia, the government role to prioritize human development in regency/city with HDI achievement values that are still low or underdeveloped is necessary. These contributions can be made by prioritizing expenditure on health, education, and economic functions in the regional budget.

Environmental degradation is a primary indicator in reducing sustainability and causing many of the challenges faced by humankind, such as climate change, water scarcity, inequality, and hunger. One way to resolve the sustainable issue (environmental degradation) is to promote sustainable development through a commitment to social progress, environmental balance, and economic growth. In conjunction with the present issue, this study aims to analyse the nexus of human development index, economic and population growth on environmental degradation in South Aceh District, Aceh Province, Indonesia. This quantitative study uses secondary data that involved three main variables: environmental degradation, economic growth, and population growth. This study data were collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Aceh, Indonesia and related Regional Government Agency for 20 years started 1997 to 2017. This study found that the human development index and population growth positively and significantly affect environmental degradation. Also, economic growth has no significant impact on environmental degradation. In conclusion, this study identifies that when the human development index low and population growth high, it would increase environmental degradation. Surprisingly, whereas economic growth does not significantly contribute to environmental degradation, this study can provide an overview of the nexus of human development index, economic and population growth on environmental degradation and its impact on society.
