Objective: To know the prevalence of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.Design: Observational cross sectional study. Setting: Blood Transfusion Center Tehsil Headquarter HospitalLiaquetpur. Subjects and Methods: The data of blood donors from 2001 to 2003. Results: Total blood donors studiedwere 1426. The prevalence for hepatitis B was 5.96% (CL 4.84%-7.32%) It was 0.07% (CL <0.01% - 0.44%) for HCVand zero for HIV. The prevalence of HBV in males was 6.03% (CL 4.87%-7.45%) while 5.05% (CL 1.91%-11.63%) infemales (p=0. 6917). The prevalence in 17-20 years age group was 6.4% (CL 3.92%-10.23%), 5.81% (CL 4.6%-7.33%)in 21-40 years age group and in 41-60 years age group it was 4.35% (CL 1.33%-28.19%) [p=0.9029]. Conclusion:Hepatitis B is common, hepatitis C is an uncommon health problem while HIV is not present in this area.

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are the chronic viral infection that might be transmitted by blood transfusion. Nepal is known to have lowest seroprevalence in Asia. The main objective of the present study is to find out the prevalence of hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and their co-infection among blood donors during study period from March to August 2014. This was a cross sectional study among volunteer blood donors in Dharan who had donated the Blood. A total of 4930 donated blood samples were collected and screened for hepatitis B and hepatitis C by using a rapid enzyme immunoassay (EIA) technique. Among 4930 blood samples under study, the overall seroprevalence of hepatitis B were 0.22% (11 out of 4930) and hepatitis C were 0.39% (19 out of 4930) (P value = 0.01) and the prevalence being lower in females than males for both cases. Hepatitis B were more in age group of 21 -30 (0.4%) but hepatitis C in age group of 31-40 (0.5%). Hepatitis B and C are potential threats to be transmitted from unscreened blood.Sunsari Technical College Journal 2015, 2(1):13-16

`Objective: To know the prevalence of ABO and Rhesus blood groups.Design: Observational cross sectional study. Setting: Blood transfusion Center Tehsil Headquarter HospitalLiaquatpur. Subjects and Methods: The data of blood donors from 2001 to 2003. Results: Total numbers of donorsstudied were 1389. The commonest ABO blood group was O present in 44.56% (CL 41.97% - 47.20%) followed byB in 32.54% (CL 30.13% - 35.06%), A in 20.88% (CL 18.82% - 23.10%) and AB in 2.02% (CL 1.39% - 2.91%) donorswhile 90.35% (CL 88.68% - 91.80%) donors were Rh +ve and 9.65% (CL 8.20% - 11.32%) were Rh -ve. Thecommonest ABO +ve group was O +ve present in 40.03% (CL 37.48% - 42.69%) followed by B +ve in 30.31% (CL27.95% - 32.78%), A +ve in 18.21% (CL 16.27% - 20.34%) and AB +ve in 1.8% (CL 1.21% - 2.66%) donors. The mostcommon ABO -ve was O -ve present in 4.54% (CL 3.56% - 5.77%), A -ve in 2.66% (CL 1.93% - 3.66%), B -ve in 2.23%(CL 1.57% - 3.17%) donors. Conclusion: Blood group O is the commonest ABO blood group and 90.35% are RH +vein this area.

Objectives: To determine incidence of steatosis in non-responder casesof chronic HCV. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Tertiary Care Sanatorium inMedicine Department of LIAQUAT University Hospital Hyderabad/Jamshoro. Period: 26-9-2011to 25 August 2012. Material & Methods: Total 144 non-responders cases of Hepatitis C wereintegrated. Both gender, age 18 to 50 yrs, chronic HCV non-responder cases as well as cases fitfor hepatic biopsy were integrated in study. Grading of Inflammation was carried out as indicatedby histopathological measures. Results: Mean age was 48.5 + 5.2years. Uppermost prevalenceof chronic HCV disease was 65(45.13%) at 41 to 50 years age interval whereas 42(29.1%) caseswere noticed in 31 to 40 yrs age group and 25(17.3%) cases were observed in 20 to 30 yearsof young age group. In this study hepatic steatosis occurrence was observed in 103 (71.5%)cases and these were categories as: grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, as (<33%) 45/103(43.68%), (33to 66%) 35/103(33.98%), (>66%) 23/103(22.33%) respectively. Conclusion: Hepatic steatosisis a important risk factor the cases of HCV to decreased response to antiviral therapy and forprogression toward fibrosis as observed in cases related to metabolic steatosis.

The study's objectives are to find out the frequency of hepatitis C, B, and HIV infection among blood donors at different hospitals of Lahore; to understand the relationship of demographic risk factors contributing to the positive cases of hepatitis C, B, and HIV. A cross-sectional study with random sampling in which 200 blood donors participated. A questionnaire was used to record the social and personal practices.  A small percentage of blood donors have a history of jaundice. More than one-fourth had undergone surgical intervention, and more than one-third had suffered a needle stick injury. The vast majority had a history of I/V injections/drips, tooth extraction/dental operations, or both. 10.5% of blood donors were Anti-HBV positive, 12.5% were Anti-HCV positive, and 0.5% were HIV positive. Shaving from community barbers should be avoided. In addition, to overcome hepatitis B, C, and HIV transmission, health education programs should be held among blood donors and the general public to prevent them from infection.

Background: Chronic viral hepatitis is a major health problem worldwide. Medical waste handlers (MWH) are particularly vulnerable to such hepatitis due to nature of their job.Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the prevalence of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infection among the medical waste handlers.Methodology: This cross-sectional study was done from January 2015 to June 2015 to know the frequency Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C among medical waste handlers in SSMC Mitford Hospital, Dhaka. Result: 96 medical waste handlers were enrolled. The mean age was 38.39 (SD ±10.057) years (range: 20 to 60 years). The leading age group was 31-40 years (32%). Most of them had little educational attainment and more than half of the respondents (53.1%) were working in the hospital for more than 10 years. Prevalence of HBV and HCV were 6.3%% and 1% respectively in MWH. More percentage of HBsAg was identified in female (8.1%), in age group between 30-39 years (17.9%), in MWH who were in the service for 7-10 years. 7.2% of the MWHs were found to have needle stick or sharp injuries while 7.7% had mucous membrane contamination. More than three-fourths of the MWHs wore thick disposable gloves, 30 (31.3%) protective gown and only 14 (14.6%) wore boots. Male MWHs were significantly more likely to wear Boots (OR: 1.505: P < 0.002) compared to Female. Conclusion: Due to needle stick puncture infectious disease like Hepatitis B & C can be transmitted to the health care workers. Health education, prophylaxis by vaccination, universal precautions and proper hospital waste management are crucial in the prevention of HBV and HCV infection. Background Blood transfusion saves many people every year that would otherwise have died. The present study aimed to provide an update and insightful information regarding prevalence of the common Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (TTIs) and associated factors among blood donors in Tanzania. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving retrospectively collected data of blood donors from the Tanzania Northern Zone Blood Transfusion Center between 2017 and 2019. Descriptive statistics were performed to describe characteristics of the blood donors. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine association between prevalence of TTIs and socio-demographic factors. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 101, 616 blood donors were included in the present study of which 85,053(83.7%) were males while 16,563 (16.3%) were females. Of all participants, the majority 45,400 (44.7%) were aged between 18 and 25 years; 79,582 (78.3%) were voluntary non-remunerated donors while 22,034 (21.7%) were replacement donors. The vast majority of them 99,626 (98%) were first time blood donors while 1990 (2%) were multiple donors. The overall prevalence of TTIs was 10.1% (10,226 out of 101,616) of which the leading was HBV accounting for 5.1% (5,264 out of 101,616). Being a replacement donor was associated with all the four types of TTIs: HIV (AOR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.10–1.35), HBV (AOR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.27–1.44), HCV (AOR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.12–1.46), and syphilis (AOR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.20–1.48). Conclusions Our study has demonstrated that Tanzania has relatively high prevalence of TTIs compared to some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. HBV infection seems to be the most common infection among blood donors and replacement blood donors are at a higher risk of harboring the commonest TTIs among blood donors.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Selection of healthy blood donors is essential to ensure blood safety. A confidential self-exclusion (CSE) system was designed so that high-risk donors could confidentially exclude their blood from use in transfusions. This study aimed to compare the demographic characteristics and the results from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B surface (HBS) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening tests on donors who opted to get into and out of CSE. DESIGN AND SETTING: Analytical cross-sectional study on all volunteer donors at Shiraz Blood Transfusion Organization from March 21, 2006, to March 21, 2008. METHODS: The results from the abovementioned tests were compared between donors who opted into and out of CSE. RESULTS: 100,148 donors in 2006 and 104,271 in 2007 gave blood. Among these donors, respectively, 829 (0.82%) and 592 (0.57%) opted for the CSE. The prevalence of HIV antibodies, HBS antigens and HCV antibodies in CSE donors was significantly higher than in donors who did not choose CSE (p < 0.05). The prevalence of at least one of these three infections among CSE donors was 3.12% in 2006 and 3.04% in 2007, and was significantly higher than the prevalence among non-CSE donors (0.58% and 0.57%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Because of the higher prevalence of HBS, HCV and HIV positivity in blood donors who chose the CSE option, offering CSE to blood donors could be a potentially useful method for improving blood safety, since it could increase the detection of infected blood during the window period.

Background: Health care workers (HCWs) represent high risk population for viral hepatitis infection. Objectives: This study sought to assess the knowledge of HCWs regarding hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infection. Methods: In a multi-center cross sectional study, all HCWs from eight teaching hospitals were invited to participate in the study and to fill in a self-administered questionnaire. Results: A total of 1008 eligible HCWs have responded to the study. A high proportion of the study participants (55.4% and 52.9%) had unsatisfactory knowledge about HBV and HCV. Mean knowledge score toward HBV was significantly higher among more educated staff, p <0.001 and vaccinated personnel, P=0.02. Majority of responders answered correctly to transmission questions toward HBV and HCV (90% and 80%, respectively). There was statistically significant difference in only transmission domain score between various hospitals (p<0.05). The highest scores were related to surgical hospital. Conclusion: Although more than ninety percent of our participants were educated about HBV and HCV, knowledge about nature of disease, prevention, treatment and vaccine availability was unsatisfactory. Continuous training program toward viral infection is a matter of necessity.

Objectives: To assess the performance of Lady Health Workers (LHWs) in collection, storage & distribution of drugs andevaluate their effectiveness regarding TB suspect identification, referral, directly observing the intake of medicine, default identification andhealth education in TB-DOTS program. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: In district Toba Tek Singh. Period: From January to Sep2006. Materials & Methods: One hundred and Two LHWs were selected randomly and interviewed using a structured pre-tested questionnaire.Results: Among 102 LHWs, 76.5% were trained in TB-DOTS. Sixty four (62.7%) had qualification matric and above. Collection of the drugswas being performed properly by 87.3%, while 83.4% were storing the anti-TB drugs at proper places. Anti-TB drugs were being distributedto patients daily by 95.1%. Under the direct supervision of LHWs 69.6% of TB patients had completed treatment. In the areas of 58.8% LHWs,TB patients were declared cured after 8 months treatment. Defaulted TB cases were present, in the areas of 19.6% LHWs, while 12.8% of theLHWs had relapsed TB cases in their areas. Most of the LHWs (85.3%) had proper record of medicine and of the patients (84.3%). Conclusion:The experienced and TB-DOTS trained LHWs of urban areas, in the age group of 41-50 years had overall good performance. The LHWs havingqualification matric and above had better performance than the LHWs having middle qualification. TB-DOTS program in district Toba Tek Singhwas working successfully and it should be continued with some improvements and innovations.
