Children are influenced by multiple contexts, including their families and schools. Research on children with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) parents has primarily focused on their experiences within their families, with little attention to experiences in the school context. The lack of research on the family–school interface of LGB parent families is troubling because these families are vulnerable to marginalization, exclusion, and stigma in the broader society, which likely extend to the school environment. This chapter reviews research on the academic achievement, social functioning, and bullying of children with LGB parents. When relevant, the author emphasizes race/ethnicity, social class, geographic location, and other key social locations that may shape the experiences of LGB–parent families, then addresses research on LGB parents themselves, including their experiences in selecting and interacting with their children’s schools. The chapter ends with recommendations for educators and practitioners who may encounter LGB parent families.

As a reflection of the culture and norms of the school community, the school climate (SC) is a potential factor connected to students’ major behavior problems (BP). Parental involvement (PI) is considered as an essential factor for SC, contributing to promote good students’ educational results, as well as better social functioning. The present study aimed to analyze the mediating effect of PI on the relationship between SC and BP, taking into consideration the school personnel perceptions. A total of 329 school personnel (teachers versus no teachers) aged between 29 and 66 (M = 50.78, SD = 7.56), mainly female (79%), were integrated in the sample. Based on the perception of the school personnel, the results indicate moderate level of PI and SC, as well as the existence of different BP in the school context. The mediating effect of PI in the relationship between the SC and BP has been demonstrated. These results suggest that, if the SC and PI are improved, it could be an effective strategy to enhance the social functioning of students in the school context. This study thus contributes to a comprehensive empirical analysis of how PI can improve the relationship between the SC and the BP of Portuguese students.

Abstract We examine how the family environment is associated with aspects of the Fragile X syndrome phenotype during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Mothers of children (n  =  48), adolescents (n  =  85), and adults (n  =  34) with Fragile X syndrome participated in a multisite study. For children and adults with Fragile X syndrome, the presence of warmth and positivity and the absence of criticism were associated with fewer behavior problems. Although a higher level of criticism was significantly associated with greater behavior problems, there were only trend-level associations between levels of warmth and positivity and behavior problems during the adolescent years. The provision of family psychoeducation programs, which can reduce parental criticism, would likely benefit both the individual with Fragile X syndrome and the family.

It was found out that age, sex, grade level, number of siblings, and person stays with has no direct influence to the pupils’ behavioral development, and however, academic success of the pupils depends on their behavior development. This study concluded that the attitude and behavior of the learner affects their academic success.

Education through activities outside of school is a learning activity that does not require tiered and continuous activities. The family is the main foundation that can influence the attitudes and behavior of a child. Children's behavior includes attitudes, speech, actions and perceptions of children in the process of development so that they become a character. The character appears through thoughts obtained based on experience and observations from where a person grows and develops, starting from the first meaning that is understood based on a person's words, gestures and behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the family environment on the formation of children's character. The method used is descriptive quantitative, with a correlational study approach. After testing the hypothesis which reads: 'there is an influence of the family environment on the formation of children's behavior', it was found that the hypothesis is acceptable, meaning that the family environment has an effect of 13.8%. These results indicate that there is an influence of the family environment on the formation and changes in children's behavior, the family is the initial foundation for children to interact with the outside environment, both the living environment and the school environment.

AbstractPrevious studies have reported significant associations between measures of the family environment and behavior problems in children. However, because children in these studies were genetically related to their parents, such links may not be caused solely by environmental influences. The goal of this study was to investigate genetic influence on associations between family environment and problem behavior using an adoption design. Participants in the study included 179 adopted and 176 nonadopted children, as well as their parents and teachers, in the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP; Plomin, DeFries, & Fulker, 1988). Mothers and fathers each completed the Family Environment Scale (FES) when their child was 1, 3, and 5 years of age; the child's problem behavior at age 7 was rated by both mothers and teachers using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Patterns of correlations for nonadopted versus adopted boys indicated that associations between aspects of the family's relationship (conflict, cohesion, expressiveness) and behavior problems in home and school were mediated genetically. For girls, however, these links appeared to be influenced by direct shared environmental effects.

This study reports results of a randomized, controlled trial examining the efficacy of the Family Check-Up (FCU) initiated during kindergarten on teacher report of children’s emotional and behavior problems in first and second grade. Children’s emotional and behavior needs and the receipt of special services in school at pretest were examined as moderators. Participants were primary caregivers and teachers of 365 children in early elementary school. Using an intent-to-treat approach, results indicated children in the FCU condition outperformed children in a business-as-usual control condition on teacher report of emotional and behavior problems in first and second grade. Children experiencing higher levels of emotional and behavior problems at pretest benefited from the FCU more than did children who experienced lower levels of problems. There was no evidence of moderation by whether children received special services in school. Implications for family-centered interventions, study limitations, and future research directions are discussed.
