Through science, we generate new knowledge and discovery, become inspired as we coax nature to reveal her myriad secrets and expand our understanding of the physical and living world. Since the beginning of human civilization, science and technology have progressed in a continuous process. As we know, Science is essentially an attempt to help human solve the problem. Increasingly interdisciplinary science is driving many changes. Some disciplines are becoming irrevocably intertwined. Progress in one field of science makes possible progress in seemingly disparate fields, and increasingly the most exciting research problems involve multidisciplinary collaborations, require the use of large-scale research facilities, and use advanced information technology. In the 21st century, legal studies offer equal promise for improving human welfare. The advances that we have made and will be making, especially in understanding human behavior and its very deep origins, will be translated into interventions of diverse sorts that will have a much bigger impact in terms of improving human welfare. Keywords : Science, Legal Studies, 21st Century.

The paper responds to research problems related to the implementation of large-scale investment projects in waterways in Europe. As part of design and construction works, it is necessary to indicate river ports that play a major role within the European transport network as intermodal nodes. This entails a number of challenges, the cardinal one being the optimal selection of port locations, taking into account the new transport, economic, and geopolitical situation that will be brought about by modernized waterways. The aim of the paper was to present an original methodology for determining port locations for modernized waterways based on non-cost criteria, as an extended multicriteria decision-making method (MCDM) and employing GIS (Geographic Information System)-based tools for spatial analysis. The methodology was designed to be applicable to the varying conditions of a river’s hydroengineering structures (free-flowing river, canalized river, and canals) and adjustable to the requirements posed by intermodal supply chains. The method was applied to study the Odra River Waterway, which allowed the formulation of recommendations regarding the application of the method in the case of different river sections at every stage of the research process.

This paper describes a systematic methodology for selecting independent variables to be considered in large-scale research problems. Five specific procedures including brainstorming, prototype interface representation, feasibility/relevance analyses, structured literature reviews, and user subjective ratings are evaluated and incorporated into an integrated strategy. This methodology is demonstrated in the context of designing the user interface for a telephone-based information inquiry system. The procedure was successful in reducing an initial set of 95 independent variables to a subset of 19 factors that warrant subsequent detailed analysis. These results are discussed in terms of a comprehensive sequential research methodology useful for investigating human factors problems.

In comparison to monolithic composite structures, tailored multi-material structures offer high potential considering lightweight design approaches in combination with cost efficient manufacturing processes. Roll forming enables flexible large scale production of hybrid structures, due to the continuous manufacturing process as well as high degree of automation. The multi-material structures consist of steel sheets which are selectively reinforced by unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastics (CFR-TP). In view of minimizing process steps and decreasing cycle times, both materials are joined by fusion bonding. Therefore, CFR-TP is heated above melting temperature of thermoplastic matrix and joined to the steel surface under defined pressure and time. However, joining of both materials within a continuous process is still challenging due to a lack in terms of process comprehension. Consequently, multi-material specimens were manufactured depending on various process parameters as temperature of either material or processing speed and tested mechanically by floating roller peel test for the evaluation of the adhesion between both materials. Furthermore, viscosity of matrix was determined and investigations of CFR-TP interface were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show the requirement of a defined CFR-TP temperature and the change in crystalline structure of the matrix in dependency of the processing.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a very promising component for bio-based plastics. Efficient synthesis of HMF from biomass is still challenging because of fast degradation of HMF to by-products under formation conditions. Therefore, different studies, conducted mainly in monophasic and biphasic batch systems with and without water addition have been published and are still under investigation. However, to produce HMF at a large scale, a continuous process is preferable. Until now, only a few studies have been published in this context. In this work, it is shown that fluorous alcohol hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) can act as superior reaction solvent for HMF synthesis from fructose in a fixed bed reactor. Very high yields of 76% HMF can be achieved in this system under optimized conditions, whilst the catalyst is very stable over several days. Such high yields are only described elsewhere with high boiling reaction solvents like dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), whereas HFIP with a boiling point of 58 °C is very easy to separate from HMF.

The most common definition of literacy is the ability to read and write. However, for teachers working with multilingual learners, the development of literacy skills is much more complex than this simple definition would suggest. Notions of literacy in the 21st century have evolved in response to a number of societal changes, such as globalization, large-scale human migration, and advances in digital technologies. This chapter considers how these societal changes have influenced conceptions and practices of literacy. It provides a brief overview of some important theoretical considerations that inform understandings of literacy development for multilingual learners, including critical literacy, multiliteracies, multimodal literacy, and translanguaging, and explores current conceptions of literacy to help second and foreign language (SFL) teachers better understand how to meet the literacy needs of multilingual learners in the 21st century, offering practical suggestions for teaching from a multiliteracies perspective.
