The extensive analysis of remote-sensed data (among which ALS-derived images) and fieldwork carried out in the Trieste Karst (Northeastern Italy) have shed light on archaeological landscapes largely unknown until recent years. The chronological definition of this complex palimpsest was based on the collection of findings associated to the archeological evidence, shape and orientation of detected structures and stratigraphic relations among features. This allowed to evaluate the interplay between archaeological and geo-morphological landforms through time and to reconstruct some long-term economic strategies pursued by past communities. As a result, we present a map of the easternmost sector of the Trieste area, next to the border between Italy and Slovenia, approximately corresponding to the area of the map Carta Tecnica Regionale “Grozzana”. The map aims at providing a tool for the protection of the cultural and environmental heritage, land use planning and touristic valorisation of the area.

A warm welcome to our "World of Difference" to all delegates attending this conference - we hope your stay is enjoyable and that you will leave Central Otago with an enhanced appreciation of the diversity of land use and the resilient and growing economic potential that this region has to offer. Without regional wellbeing the national economy will struggle to grow, something Central Government finally seems to be realising, and the Central Otago District Council Long Term Plan 2012-2022 (LTP) signals the importance of establishing a productive economy for the local community which will aid in the economic growth of the district and seeks to create a thriving economy that will be attractive to business and residents alike. Two key principles that underpin the LTP are sustainability and affordability, with the definition of sustainability being "… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Our objectives were to develop a method that would be appropriate for long-term ecological studies, but that would permit rapid surveys to evaluate biotic complementarity and land-use planning in Amazonia. The Amazon basin covers about 7 million km². Therefore, even a sparse coverage, with one sample site per 10.000 km², would require about 700 sampling sites. Financial considerations limit the number of sites and investment at each site, but incomplete coverage makes evaluation of biotic complementarity difficult or impossible (Reddy & Dávalos 2003). Our next challenge is to install similar systems throughout Amazonia. The cost, based on modification of Al Gentry's original design is moderate (less than US$ 50.000 per site if it is not necessary to immediately identify all vascular plants in plots) and we can obtain RAP results for most taxa in the short term at much lower cost. However, biological surveys will only be relevant if the local people participate and the surveys serve as much to teach the local communities about the value of their natural resources as they serve to teach the international community about biodiversity. Therefore, we want to see each site run as a long-term ecological research project by local people and institutions. Biological surveys are an important tool in land-use planning, but only the local people can implement those plans.

Land-based, utility-scale renewable energy (RE) systems using wind or solar resources to generate electricity is becoming a decisive solution to meet long-term carbon emission reduction goals. Local governments are responding in kind, by adopting their own goals and/or establishing policies to facilitate successful implementations of RE in their jurisdiction. One factor to successful RE development is to locate the most suitable lands, while continuing to sustain land-based economies and ecosystem services. Local governments often have limited resources; and this is especially true for small, land-constrained local governments. In this paper, we illustrate how a standardized RE technical mapping framework can be used by local governments to advance the implementation of RE in land-constrained areas, through a case study in the Town of Canmore, Alberta. Canmore has a limited municipal area surrounded by the Canadian Rockies, along with complex land-use bylaw and environmentally sensitive habitats. This mapping framework accounts for these conditions as it considers theoretical resources, technically recoverable lands, legally accessible lands, and the spatial capital cost of connecting new RE facilities. Different land-use planning scenarios are considered including changing setback buffers and expanding restrictions on development to all environmentally sensitive districts. The total RE potentials are then estimated based on the least-conflict lands. Technically speaking, even under restrictive land suitability scenarios, Canmore holds enough land to achieve ambitious RE targets, but opportunities and challenges to implementation remain. To eventually succeed in its long-term emission reduction goal, the most decisive step for Canmore is to balance the growth of energy demands, land-use changes, and practicable RE development. Mapping systems that can study the influence of land-use planning decisions on RE potential are critical to achieving this balance.

The economic and strategic importance of tungsten is widely recognized, but several concerns exist on its stable future supply. Portugal is one of the main tungsten producers in Europe, having generated ≈121 kt of contained tungsten in mineral concentrates from 1910 to 2020, i.e., ≈3.3% of the global production documented for the same time period. Since the early nineties, tungsten mining in Portugal is confined to the Panasqueira deposit which accounts for 79% of the country reserves (≈5.4 kt). However, according to the performed Generalized Verhulst and Richards curve-fitting forecasts, there is a significant future potential for increasing production in Portugal due to the low (<2%) depletion rates of the remaining known tungsten resources (≈141 kt). This projected growth is not necessarily guaranteed, depending on many unpredictable economic, technological, and political factors, besides appropriate social consents. Even so, a prudent land-use planning oriented to long-term needs should avoid the sterilization of the most relevant tungsten resources so far identified in the country. These are resources of “public importance”, as objectively demonstrated with a weighed multi-dimensional (geological, economic, environmental, and social) approach. Safeguarding the access to these resources does not implicate more than ≈6% of the Portugal mainland territory. The joint interpretation of results independently gathered for tungsten production forecasts and for the definition of areas hosting tungsten resources of public importance, provides additional support to political decisions on the urgent need to reconcile mineral exploration surveys and mining with other land uses.

Abstract Land use planning is defined as the regulation of the relationship between space and human activities. Space occupied by human settlements, farmland and forests, parks, fallow land, rivers and lakes, and by transportation networks constitutes a network of areas dedicated to land uses such as agriculture, forestry, rangeland, industry, mining, recreation, and fishing. Land use planning is a comprehensive and long-term approach to planning human relations and their activities in space; it is the task of regulating and coordinating the strategies and general orientations of sectors, and it is the foundation of economies and human activities. The purpose of land use planning is to achieve an optimal distribution of economic and social activities. Land use selection and management are commonly done without regard to the carrying capacity of the land which, when exceeded, results in economic losses and in a reduction of environmental quality. The overall goal of land use planning is to achieve the optimal use of the land within the national interest framework. Accordingly, formulating a successful plan for managing the development of a country requires proper attention to the roles of geography and land use. Creation of a suitable balance between the Earth and its use by human activities can be achieved by proper land management. The increasing importance of environmental issues and human alteration of natural environments calls for sustainable development and land use practices that conserve natural resources while benefiting society and the environment. Nowadays, due to many factors such as climate change, population growth, changing standards of living, poverty, access to education, and mismanagement of natural and water resources, there is a need to diversify food and agricultural production in a variety of ways. Overseas cultivation is one of them, and it has potential for improving agricultural production. The practice of overseas cultivation by a country means planting and harvesting of a variety of agricultural products in other countries to be sold in its domestic market or in foreign markets. There are five basic principles that underline the success of overseas cultivation involving any group of countries: (1) mutual respect for the governance of all countries; (2) making and abiding by agreements between the countries; (3) non-interference in the internal problems of each country and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries; (4) optimal use of human resources and capacities to support agricultural activities and trade; and (5) expanding security and military cooperation.

This chapter discusses the changes to the regime of landownership and land use in the decades following annexation. In the second half of the eighteenth century, officials and scholars alike were developing new methods of quantifying Russian terrain. In their deployment of the cadastral survey and estate mapping and the compilation of statistics, they helped standardize the management and definition of imperial space. However, their efforts also cultivated an increasing awareness of the value and idiosyncrasies of micro-landscapes and shed light on differences in the cultural understanding of landownership in Russia and the former khanate. The chapter then shows how imperial officials, Russian pomeshchiki (landowners), and Crimean Tatars used landownership practices to shore up social and political hierarchies.

To improve communication between reindeer-herders and other land users, we developed and implemented a system to produce reindeer husbandry plans together with Sami reindeer-herding communities. A central component of our communications strategy was the introduction and use of a participatory GIS (pGIS). We evaluated the potential and limitations of pGIS as a tool for collaborative learning. We concluded that by merging traditional and scientific knowledge in a pGIS, the process of spatial communication has contributed to a more inclusive planning process, and to improved knowledge-sharing. Furthermore, the process has contributed to a more efficient long-term perspective where land use planning focuses on key areas but with solutions applied to the landscape. The Model Forest offered an appropriate platform to facilitate the process.

Over the last two decades the concept of applied archaeology has been used increasingly to refer to how archaeology can contribute more broadly to society at large. Depending on the intellectual and geographical context there are many different ways that applied archaeology is understood. One important set of approaches builds on the standard definition of applied science as the application of scientific knowledge in creative problem-solving. Many archaeologists find that evidence which sheds light on resource exploitation strategies in the past is particularly rewarding in this regard, arguing that the insights gained from archaeological research can guide land use planning and resource management and make a positive impact on local livelihoods for people today and in the future (Costanza et al. 2007a; Hayashida 2005). This kind of applied archaeology is usually associated with rural livelihood development, but there is also an emerging applied archaeology of land use planning in predominantly urban sectors (Smith 2010). Some of the most prolific projects of applied agro-archaeology for rural development are those engaging in rejuvenating prehistoric agricultural features that have fallen into disuse or are being mismanaged. Groundbreaking applied agro-archaeology in the Andean region demonstrates considerable advances in this field, reconstructing abandoned raised fields, irrigation canals, and cultivation terraces in order to understand pre-Hispanic agricultural systems and long-term land-use dynamics and to re-apply ancient technologies for contemporary use (Chepstow-Lusty and Winfield 2000; Erickson 1985, 1994, 1998; Kendall 1997b, 2005, Chapter 9 this volume). The Andes are exceptionally rich in archaeological remains of pre-Hispanic agriculture and demonstrate considerable diversity in peoples’ approaches in the past in addressing the many different managerial issues associated with sustaining a farming livelihood in these environments (Denevan 2001; Donkin 1979). Linking the broad scope of applied agro-archaeology to the theoretical framework of historical ecology (Balée 1998, 2006; Balée and Erickson 2006; Crumley 1994, 2000, 2007), the motive of this contribution is to discuss some of the problems and opportunities facing an on-going applied agro-archaeological project in the Yungas of the Bolivian Andes (Isendahl 2008).

In land-use planning, taking natural hazards into account cannot be based uniquely on the degree of danger, as shown on natural hazards maps. The level of risk brought in by the different types of human activity in the areas exposed to these hazards must also be taken into consideration. The communes in canton Vaud will soon have completed the realisation of all gravitational natural hazards maps according to catchment area. Consequently, a cantonal and intercommunal strategy for integral risk management must be put in place. The implementation of this strategy requires some prerequisites such as: legislation based on risks, a definition of protection objectives, the organisation of a decision-making process involving all parties concerned, and which will make possible a comprehensive evaluation of land-use related interests. These reflections should result in a change of attitude when faced with the risks linked to natural hazards, and hence land-use adapted to these risks respecting the principles of precaution, equity and proportionality.
