The effects of reciprocal teaching on the perceived reading comprehension self-efficacy of 2nd-grade pupils: Reflections of the pupils and their teacher

This study examined the effects of reciprocal teaching on the perceived reading comprehension self-efficacy of 2nd-grade pupils. The study was designed in pre-post test experimental design with a control group. Qualitative data was also collected from the intervention group students and the classroom teacher who carried out the intervention lessons. Participants consist of typically developing 2nd-grade pupils from a state primary school (n = 34) in Turkey. While the intervention group used a total of 36 lesson hours of reciprocal teaching techniques for 6 lessons per week for 6 weeks, the lesson was taught in traditional ways in the control group. According to the research findings, there was no statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the intervention and control groups. Students stated that the most difficult reciprocal teaching strategy was summarizing, while the easiest was the prediction. As a result of the observations of the classroom teacher who conducted the intervention lessons, the positive effects of reciprocal teaching on the pupils' reading comprehension were emphasized. For this reason, it is suggested that the use of reciprocal teaching in Literacy lessons should be widespread in Turkey.

Background: Adolescence is an essential period in every human’s life. The lack of knowledge on puberty issues may adversely impact an adolescent’s future mental health and self-efficacy. The present study aimed to determine the effect of puberty health education on the general self-efficacy of female students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test; post-test and a control group design. This study was conducted on 100 female students of public schools with the onset of menstruation in 2018 in Ghaemshahr City, Iran. To prevent data contamination, the control group was selected from another similar public school. The required data were collected by Sherer General Self-efficacy Questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS using statistics, including mean, standard deviation, Chi-squared test, Fisher’s Exact test, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Paired Samples t-test. Results: The study groups were matched for demographic variables except for the mother’s age (P=0.01) and father’s education (P=0.001). Self-efficacy was not low in any of the groups before and after the training. Mean±SD pre-training self-efficacy scores in the intervention (63.68±9.72) and control (65.3±8.78) groups were not statistically significant (P=0.69). Comparing the students’ self-efficacy mean Pre-test-Post-test scores revealed a significant difference in the intervention group (P=0.017); however, there was no significant change in the control group (P=0.284) in this respect. Comparing between-group mean self-efficacy changes concerning before and after the intervention values suggested no significant difference (P=0.294). Conclusion: Puberty health education was effective in promoting the explored female students’ self-efficacy. Accordingly, it is recommended to include puberty education in female students’ courses. In addition, community health nurses are suggested to include this training in their programs.

This study was carried out to test the effects of reciprocal teaching on reading comprehension skills, learning retention and self-efficacy perception of reading comprehension. Research was conducted in 4th grade Turkish lessons of a primary school located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey with experimental and control groups of 25 randomly assigned students. Experimental method was used in the research and findings were supported with qualitative data. Data were collected through the Reading Comprehension Skills Achievement Test, Self-efficacy Perception Scale for Reading Comprehension and Student Interview Form, each developed by the researchers. According to the findings of the research, there was a significant difference between students in the experimental group where the reciprocal teaching technique was implemented and students in the control group where the traditional teaching process was continued in terms of the achievement level and retention scores of the reading comprehension in favor of the experimental group. However, no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of self-efficacy levels. The students in the experimental group expressed that they were pleased to have the opportunity to lead their friends, to have a say in guiding the lesson, this technique facilitated their understanding of the texts they read and it provided them with a group work environment.

Background: The adults’ life is rooted in their childhood. Children living in single-parent families have less self-efficacy than others. Educating self-awareness skill reliance on the family is among the key aspects of self-efficacy promotion in early childhood. The present study aimed to determine the effect of self-awareness training of the mothers as the head of the household on the self-efficacy of their 10- to 12-year-old sons. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a Pre-test-Post-test and a control group design. The study sample consisted of 10- to 12-year-old boys (N=71) from public schools of Ray City, Iran, and their heads of the family mothers. The study subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The Pre-test was administered to both groups. Then, the mothers of the intervention group attended four 45-minute training sessions twice a week. Moreover, the Post-test was administered to the groups three months after the end of the intervention. The required data were collected by demographic characteristics form, Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS), and Self-efficacy Questionnaire for Children (SEQ-C). Furthermore, the obtained data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics, including the Chi-squared test, Fisher’s Exact test, Independent Samples t-test, Paired Samples t-test, and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) using SPSS. Results: The study results suggested a significant difference in self-awareness Mean±SD scores of the mothers in the intervention group before (41.77±10.59) and after (53.83±8.43) conducting the intervention (P<0.001); however, such difference was not significantly different in the control group before (47.31±12.45) and three months after the intervention (47.05±11.76). There was a significant difference between the self-efficacy Mean±SD scores of boys in the intervention group before (61.88±9.29) and after (70.44±8.12) providing the intervention (P<0.001); however, this difference was not significantly different in the control group before (65.68±11.33) and after the intervention provision (65.14±12.01). Conclusion: In this study, mothers’ self-awareness positively affected their sons’ self-efficacy. Thus, self-awareness enabled mothers to identify the emotions of themselves and their children and become aware of them and pay more attention to interacting with their children. These findings help school health nurses in providing a proper educational environment with the collaboration of mothers who are the head of the family.

The purpose of this study was to  investigate the effectiveness of using the reciprocal teaching strategy on improving the reading comprehension of deaf students in Jordan. The reading comprehension was measured at the literal and inferential levels. The total number of deaf participants was  10 grade six students: 5 males and 5 females The students were selected from the Marka School for Hearing Challenges overseen by the Ministry of Education. The available study sample was divided into two groups: The experimental group consisting of 5 students 2 females and 3 males was taught using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy and the control group consisting of 5 students  3 females and 2 males  was taught using the conventional strategy. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference at the alpha level of .05 on the location and form of performance of deaf students on the posttest due to the teaching strategy. The group that  used the reciprocal teaching strategy with its two levels (literal and inferential) performed better than the group that used the conventional strategy. Also, the results showed no statistically significant difference due to gender at the alpha level of .05 on the location and form of performance on the posttest. Moreover,   the results revealed a significant difference at the alpha level of .05 on the location and form on the posttest due to the interaction between the teaching strategies and gender. Males and females who received the reciprocal teaching strategy performed significantly better than the participants who received the conventional method.

The research aimed at investigating the significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between students taught using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) strategy integrated with Padlet and students taught using conventional teaching strategy. This research was quasi-experimental utilizing post-test only control group design. The population of this research was tenth-grade students in SMA Negeri 4 Singaraja. The sample of this research were 73 students consisting of 35 students from X BB 1 as experimental group and 38 students from BB 2 as control group. The sample were chosen using cluster random sampling technique. The data collection in both groups were done through post-test. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The result of descriptive statistics analysis reveals that the mean score for experimental group is higher than control group (78.03 > 73.39). Furthermore, the result of inferential statistics analysis through t-test shows that the significant value of tobserve is higher than tcritical value, which is 2.270 > 1.666 (df = 71, α = 0.05). Thus, it indicates that there is a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between students taught using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) strategy integrated with Padlet and students taught using conventional teaching strategy.

The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of Teams Games Tournament (TGT) method to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grades of SMP N 02 Jepara in the academic year 2018/2019 and also to help the English teachers more creative in teaching reading especially on reading comprehension at eighth grades of SMP N 02 Jepara in the academic year 2018/2019. This research was a true experimental design exactly Pretest-Posttest control group Design that involving two groups of classes. One group treated as the experimental class and the other group treated as a controlled class. In the experimental class, the researcher applied the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and in controlled class, the researcher applied conventional teaching strategy. The population of this research was the eighth grades students of SMP N 02 Jepara which consisted of 320 students. The samples of the research consisted of 64 students which were taken by using simple random sampling, VIII F consisted of 32 students as experimental class and VIII E consisted of 32 students as a controlled class. There were two variables in this research: Teams Games Tournament (TGT) as the independent variable and students’ reading comprehension as the dependent variable. The instrument of this research was the reading comprehension test. In the reading test, the result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between students’ post-test in both experimental and controlled class. In the experimental class, the total mean score of the post-test was 94.75 was greater than the total mean score in the controlled class was 77.25. From the t-test, the researcher found that the value of the t-test in the post-test was greater than the t-table (8.616 > 2.000). Based on the findings and the discussion of the research, the researcher drew a conclusion that the use of the Teams Games Tournament was effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension in the eighth grades of SMPN 02 Jepara.

Background: The prevalence of schizophrenia has increased in the last few years. Nevertheless, methods in assisting schizophrenic patients have not improved significantly. Islamic spiritual mindfulness is a spiritual approach that can help schizophrenic patients increase their self-efficacy in anger management. However, the application of this intervention is still not well researched.Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of Islamic spiritual mindfulness on self-efficacy in anger management among schizophrenic patients.Methods: This study utilized a pre-post quasi-experimental design with a control group. A total of 54 schizophrenic patients were purposively recruited and divided into two groups: the intervention group (n=27) and the control group (n=27). The intervention group received four sessions of Islamic spiritual mindfulness in two weeks, while the control group received a standard intervention from the hospital. The data were collected using the Regulatory Emotional Self-Efficacy (RESE) scale and analyzed using the t-test.Results: The results showed a significant difference in self-efficacy scores between the control and intervention groups (p=0.000) after the intervention. In the pre-test, the mean score of self-efficacy in the intervention group was lower than the control group (M=28.15 vs. M=30.26) without a significant difference. However, in the post-test, a significant difference in self-efficacy between the intervention and control groups was found (M=46.44 vs. M=46.44; p=0.000).Conclusion: Islamic spiritual mindfulness significantly affects self-efficacy among schizophrenic patients. The Islamic spiritual mindfulness can be applied as a new form of approach to increase self-efficacy in schizophrenic patients.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of film screening for raising awareness and improving treatment in various clinical groups. This study not only focused on film screening but also paid special attention to pre-screening group analysis to explore the effectiveness of group movie analysis on mothers with schizophrenic sons. Methods: The present study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test and a control group. The research population included all mothers with schizophrenic sons who had enrolled in the Iranian Society Supporting Individuals with Schizophrenia in Tehran in 2021. The participants were 30 mothers with schizophrenic sons who were selected based on the inclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The participants in the intervention group attended 12 film therapy analysis sessions (one session per week). The data were collected using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Statistical analyses were performed using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: The results showed a significant difference between the mean scores of resilience for the participants before ( M = 28.89) and after the film therapy analysis intervention ( M = 52.56, F = 6.15, p = .0001). Conclusion: Film therapy analysis was effective in improving the resilience of mothers with schizophrenic sons. It seems that movie screening with the group analysis afterward contributed to sharing the experiences of caring for the sick child and creating a sense of empathy in mothers. Thus, group movie analysis can be used as a suitable option to reduce the psychological distress of mothers with schizophrenic sons and improve their quality of life.

Abstract Background Almost one-third of children under 5 years old in Indonesia suffer from stunting. Stunting can be prevented optimally during pregnancy as the initial phase of the first 1000 days of life. This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition and reproductive health education of pregnant women in Bogor Regency, Indonesia. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 194 pregnant women from August to November 2019. The pregnant women were randomly selected from four different villages in Bogor Regency. The intervention group (n = 97) received 2 h of nutrition and reproductive health education in small groups (four or five mothers per group) every 2 weeks for 3 consecutive months. This interactive education was given by facilitators using techniques such as lectures, role-playing, simulation, and games. The control group (n = 97) received regular health care services. A structured questionnaire was applied to collect data consisting of maternal characteristics, nutritional and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the intervention and control groups. Data were analysed using t-test and chi-square analysis. Results Pregnant women in the intervention group indicated a significant increase in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding nutrition and reproductive health after receiving education. The pre-test and post-test mean scores in the intervention group were 55.1 and 83.1 for overall knowledge, 40.2 and 49.0 for attitudes, and 36.2 and 40.2 for practices, respectively. In the control group, there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores for these three variables. There was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the post-test mean between the intervention group and the control group, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05) in the pre-test. Conclusion Providing nutrition and reproductive health education through small groups with interactive methods improves the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women. This intervention has the potential to be replicated and developed for large-scale implementation by optimising collaboration between government, non-governmental organizations, and maternal and child health service providers.

The aim of this research is to examine the effects of creative drama method on students' achievements towards the music lesson . In addition to this, in the research, it was aimed to develop appropriate educational activities prepared with creative drama method for the theoretical subjects of music, to eliminate the unwillingness of students towards these subjects, to facilitate the learning of information about music theory, to make learning fun and permanent, and to provide the student to learn voluntarily. In this study; For the determined purpose, creative drama method was applied in the teaching of theoretical knowledge of the 4th grade musical perception and information learning field in the 2018-2019 Academic Year Music Course Education Program of the Ministry of Education. The study was carried out by experimental method. The study group consists of 80 students, including 40 students in the Samsun Mimarsinan Primary School, an experimental group and 40 students in the control group. While the subjects pertaining to the musical perception and information learning area were taught by the classroom teacher with the traditional (classical) teaching method in the control group, the experimental group was taught by the researcher using the creative drama method. The pre-test and post-test post-test music course success scale was applied to both groups. With the results obtained from the scale, the effect of creative drama method on students' achievements towards the music lesson was investigated. As a result, it was found that creative drama method had a positive effect on students ' achievements, there was no significant difference according to gender, and the effect on students' achievement levels was 'enormous'.
