scholarly journals Correlational investigation of manufacturing technology and environmental impact in an agricultural machinery industry

2021 ◽

<p>There is a relation between the environmental impacts to the high emissions in the environment and the natural resources depletion, which can be measured with the useful life of the products, affected by the manufacturing technologies and the sustainable development. In this background, the present article aims to evaluate the environmental impact generated by the manufacturing technology in an agricultural machinery industry, in the grain trailer production, regarding the lifecycle from the cradle to the gate. The study consists in a practical adoption in the industry, where the product and the production flow were identified, the inventory analysis was performed and later the environmental impact was evaluated, considering three categories of ending damage (endpoint): human health, ecosystem and the scarcity of resources, in addition to twenty-two environmental impact categories (midpoint). There is a strong correlation among the use of carbon steel and stainless, the laser machining process and the environmental impact, where the human health damage category is the most impacted in the carbon dioxide element, gas associated to the greenhouse effect. The consumerism of the natural resources for the energy generation is the category which most affected in the scarcity of the fossil resources.</p>

Competition among companies is growing globally, with the need to increase productivity and efficiency in the product sector. However, there is also a growing concern about global warming and the depletion of natural resources, as well as their effects on human health. In this context, all human activities that involve intense usage of resources must take into account sustainability as one of the decision criteria. This work presents the application of decision-making methods to define the best product mix in the agricultural machinery industry. With this objective, the current schedule of the production line was identified, along with the production flow, by performing an inventory analysis and an environmental impact study (endpoint). A total of seven alternatives for the production mix of grain trailers were defined, considering different materials and production processes. The selection of the best schedule according to the different criteria was performed through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the managerial implications for decision making. The results obtained through AHP identified a single alternative as being the best, which facilitates the decision making. The DEA method identified two alternatives as the most efficient, and in this case the manager can choose between a product mix that generates lesser environmental impact or greater profitability. Although applied to agricultural industry, the presented methodology can be easily adapted to other activities related to the built environment, such as construction industry.

There are numerous threats to the natural environment that pose a significant risk both to the environment and to human health, including car tires. Thus, there is a need to determine the impact of the life cycle of car tires on the environment, starting with the processes of raw materials acquisition, production, and ending with end-of-life management. Therefore, the authors of this study chose to do research on passenger car tires (size: P205/55/R16). As part of the research, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of traditional car tires was performed with the use of the Eco-indicator 99, cumulative energy demand (CED), and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methods. The level of negative effects was determined for the life cycle of a tire and its particular stages: Production, use, and end of life. The negative impact on the atmosphere, soil, and water, as well as on human health, the environment, and natural resources was also investigated. The results show that the most energy-absorbing stage of a car tire life cycle is the use stage. It was found that the most harmful impact involves the depletion of natural resources and emissions into the atmosphere. Recycling car tires reduces their negative environmental impact during all their life cycle stages.

The environmental impact of shipping on marine environment includes discharge of garbage. Plastic litter is of particular concern due to abundance, resistance to degradation and detrimental effect on marine biota. According to recently published studies, a further research is required to assess human health risk. Monitoring data indicate that despite banning plastic disposal at sea, shipping is still a source of plastic pollution. Some of the measures to combat the problem are discussed.

&nbsp; The production of compressor disks places high demands on the manufacturing technology. A very complex task is created by new difficult-to-cut materials and integral components. The project “SchwerSpan” is taking on this task by developing a machining process for rough milling in the production of compressor disks. The aim of the process is to reduce the tool costs by increasing material removal rate.

A green product as one that has less of an environmental impact or is less detrimental to human health that the traditional product equivalent. Now-a-days, peoples are becoming more conscious about health and environment. Green products will be produced by using organic fertilizers, without using any pesticides, insecticides, any inorganic fertilizers, or toxic elements. So, the demand for such products has doubled when compared to the last ten years. The changing climatic condition is not just a talk but has become an international concern. This awareness is greatly affecting consumer's purchasing decision. Even marketers are taking measures to minimize the production of harmful wastes. In the present scenario, brands producing green products use green marketing to communicate their value proposition to the market. Green products will be healthier in nature and safe to use.In this present study, to make a research on green products marketing among the consumers and their perspective.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are traditionally synthesized using formamide solvents that are hazardous to human health and the environment. In order to alleviate the environmental impact of MOF synthesis in both academic and industrial settings, safer and greener solvent alternatives are desired. Herein, STEPOSOL® MET-10U (<i>N,N</i>-dimethyl-9-decenamide), a bioderived solvent produced <i>via</i> olefin metathesis using renewable feedstocks, such as plant oils, is explored as a solvent for the synthesis of a series of structurally diverse MOFs.
