The advancement of information technology has changed the education landscape. The process of teaching is no longer the same. Information technology has made e-learning possible and available on a large scale. The main component of an e-learning is a learning management system (LMS). LMS has been widely used and are accessible through the Internet. By connected and accessed to the Internet, LMS are exposed to various threats. Proper understanding of these threats combined with strategy and best practices countermeasures will ensure a safe learning environment. Therefore this study will look into the information security aspect of LMS. There are two main purpose of this study. First, this study provides a review of information security in e-learning environments and explains the important of information security. Confidentiality, integrity and availability are considered to be the primary pillars of information security. In addition to these pillars, the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium introduced a common body of knowledge (CBK) comprised of ten domains relating to specific information security topics. These domains are the foundation of security practices for those involved in information security. In this article, each of these is explained within an e-learning context. It is recommended that institutions employing e-learning adhere to these domains. By applying the principles and practices associated with each domain, e-learning institutions should be able to provide an e-learning system with high confidentiality, integrity and availability. The second purpose of this study is to understand student perception of an information security perspective of an e-learning management system. To achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted targeted at undergraduate students in a distance learning program. 497 students responded to a survey questionnaires. Apart from demographics information, the survey asked the respondent to rate six statements related to how they perceived security of the learning management system which they are currently using. All six statements are rated using a five point Likert scale anchored at 1 (Not at all) to 5 (Very much). Frequencies analysis was conducted to show the profile of the respondent. Overall, respondent has strong positive perceptions towards security of their LMS. This study provides an overall picture of information security elements of a learning management system. It can serve as an introduction which help LMS administrator to understand the issues and possibilities related to the safety of LMS.

AbstractThe prevalence of HTTP web traffic on the Internet has long transcended the layer 7 classification, to layers such as layer 5 of the OSI model stack. This coupled with the integration-diversity of other layers and application layer protocols has made identification of user-initiated HTTP web traffic complex, thus increasing user anonymity on the Internet. This study reveals that, with the current complex nature of Internet and HTTP traffic, browser complexity, dynamic web programming structure, the surge in network delay, and unstable user behavior in network interaction, user-initiated requests can be accurately determined. The study utilizes HTTP request method of GET filtering, to develop a heuristic algorithm to identify user-initiated requests. The algorithm was experimentally tested on a group of users, to ascertain the certainty of identifying user-initiated requests. The result demonstrates that user-initiated HTTP requests can be reliably identified with a recall rate at 0.94 and F-measure at 0.969. Additionally, this study extends the paradigm of user identification based on the intrinsic characteristics of users, exhibited in network traffic. The application of these research findings finds relevance in user identification for insider investigation, e-commerce, and e-learning system as well as in network planning and management. Further, the findings from the study are relevant in web usage mining, where user-initiated action comprises the fundamental unit of measurement.

This chapter provides an overview of the use of swarm-intelligence techniques in the field of e-learning. Swarm intelligence is an artificial intelligence technique inspired by the behavior of social insects. Taking into account that the Internet connects a high number of users with a negligible delay, some of those techniques can be combined with sociology concepts and applied to e-learning. The chapter analyzes several of such applications and exposes their strong and weak points. The authors hope that understanding the concepts used in the applications described in the chapter will not only inform researchers about an emerging trend, but also provide with interesting ideas that can be applied and combined with any e-learning system.

In the past decades, the Internet has evolved so rapidly that it makes the information-technology industry grow extremely fast. Internet-based applications such as e-commerce, e-payment, e-billing, e-learning, and so forth have tremendous influence on society: There is a trend that our society will be reshaped by the Internet. Among these applications, e-learning is one of the killer applications. Currently, the traditional education system faces some challenges that arose from the development of the knowledge-based economy. School enrollment increases with the population growth, education levels also increase for the new economy, and the cost of higher education escalates. On the other hand, in the workforce-training market, as the information economy develops, the demand for skilled workers increases. As the technology keeps changing, the workforce needs continuous training to maintain its productivity level. Hence, both formal school-based education and continuous workforce training have become big business now, and they will be even bigger in the future (Kerrey & Isakson, 2000). A more sophisticated education model is required to take this challenge, and so e-learning came into being. Compared to traditional classroom teaching, e-learning provides one major advantage: It makes the access of information much easier and more convenient. Hence, it makes learning of all kinds, at all levels, anytime, anyplace, at any pace a practical reality (Kolar, 2001). E-learning also gives tremendous cost savings for both instructors and learners; the learning model is shifted from instructor centered to learner centered, which focuses primarily on the needs of learners. The updating of online material is also much easier. Many e-learning systems can develop personalized and interactive applications that allow users to customize their e-learning models to their own pace, and they can truly engage the user in that they involve the simulation of real-world events and sophisticated collaboration with other learners and instructors (Quah & Chen, 2002). In our e-learning system, we incorporated mobile-agent technology to enhance the response time of information retrieval. The purpose of this incorporation is to overcome the bottleneck problem faced by many pure client-server-based systems. Since mobile agents are able to traverse from one information server to another autonomously to search for relevant documents for users, only relevant articles are sent back. This saves bandwidth and enhances the efficiency of the e-learning system. As a result, the turnaround time for user queries or information searches reduces, and the feedback from the user community is positive as the response time is shorter and users find it easier to maintain their trains of thought in their study.

Human motion animation has been one of the major research topics in the field of computer graphics for decades. Techniques developed in this area help present human motions in various applications. This is crucial for enhancing the realism as well as promoting the user interest in the applications. To carry this merit to e-learning applications, we have developed efficient techniques for delivering human motion information over the Internet to collaborating e-learning users and revealing the motion information in the client machines with different rendering capability. Our method offers a mechanism to extract human motion data at various levels of detail (LoD). We also propose a set of importance factors to allow an e-learning system to determine the LoD of the human motion for rendering as well as transmission, according to the importance of the motion and the available network bandwidth. At the end of the paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method with some experimental results.

Kata kunci: pelajar, pembelajaran daring, pengajar, sistem pembelajaran, website   Abstract: Modern technology is growing rapidly, as a society we can feel positive things from the development of modern technology, one of which is the internet. Using the internet with positive things can facilitate community activities, such as in the field of education, one of which is teaching and learning activities. With teaching and learning activities, it can add insight and knowledge to the community, but sometimes students and even teachers who carry out teaching and learning activities are too constrained by time and the regulations that apply to the place of study. The results of the problems that the authors get in conventional teaching and learning activities are that they are required to take the time to go to the place of study and also determine the duration of teaching and learning and even make regulations that sometimes make participants until the teacher is not comfortable with these rules. Therefore, the authors are interested in solving these problems by creating a learning information system (e-learning) with a web-based learner-led learning method that can be accessed anywhere and anytime without incurring costs and not being constrained by time. This research is expected to help in the teaching and learning process comfortably. This website also provides facilities such as video materials and articles aimed at making students more comfortable learning with interactive videos and certificate facilities are also available as evidence that students have succeeded in solving problems from the material they have studied.   Keywords: e-learning, learning system, student; teacher, website
