The present study continues a series of publications by the authors on the diversity of the herb vegetation in the floodplains of the Vychegda and Pechora rivers and their tributaries (Komi Republic). The floristic classification of the orders Molinietalia Koch 1926 and Arrhenatheretalia R. Tx. 1931 was published earlier (Shushpannikova, Yamalov, 2013, 2014). The results of classification of communities belonging to the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea Klika in Klika et Novák 1941 are discussed in this paper in accordance with principles of the Braun-Blanquet approach (Braun-Blanquet, 1964; Mirkin, Naumova, 1998). Analysis was based on 268 relevés made in 1981–2016. The assessment of environmental parameters was performed by ecological methods by L. G. Ramensky (Ramensky et al., 1956). Syntaxonomic diversity of the vegetation of the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea in the floodplain of rivers Vychegda and Pechora is presented by 3 orders (Phragmitetalia W. Koch 1926, Oenanthetalia aquaticae Hejny in Kopecky et Hejny 1965 and Magno-Caricetalia Pignatti 1953), 4 alliances (Phragmition communis W. Koch 1926, Nardosmion laevigatae Klotz et Köck 1986, Equisetion arvensis Mirkin. et Naumova in Kononov et al. 1989 emend. Taran 1995 and Magnocaricion elatae Koch 1926) and 13 associations. The communities of the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea, as well as the order Molinietalia of Molinio–Arrhenatheretea, are located at all levels of the floodplains and are characterized by a variety of humidification conditions. However, the communities of the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea are characterized by higher humidification indices (72.2–86.3) compared to meadow vegetation the order Molinietalia of the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea of (68.8–74.4). A lot of associations, heterogeneous in their floristic composition, can be divided into 9 subassociations and 10 variants. New 4 subassociations (caricetosum vesicariae, equisetosum fluviatilis, persicaretosum amphibiae and lysimachetosum vulgaris), are included into ass. Caricetum gracilis Savich 1926. The peculiarities of the floristic composition of the above mentioned associations, as well as their distribution and ecology are discussed. The distinguished associations are well differentiated by their elevation position on the floodplains. The communities of the ass. Caricetum gracilis are located at all levels of the floodplainons; these of Agrostio stoloniferae–Equisetetum arvensis — on the highest ones; Equisetetum fluviatilis — on the lowest part of the floodplains in the riparian zone. The described communities are located on the soils with various ecological indi­cators. The distinguished associations are differentiated by the levels of humidification (65.9–89.9), mean figures — 70.3–86.3. The communities of the ass. Agrostio stoloniferae–Equisetetum arvensis occupy the driest sites (65.9–72.9); these of associations ­Equisetetum fluviatilis and Nardosmietum laevigatae — the wettest ones (80.7–87.8). The ass. Caricetum aquatilis has a wide range of humidification (72.7–89.9). The variability of humidification varies from alternating to high values (6.4–12.0). The ­greatest differences in humidification are experienced by the communities of the ass. Caricetum gracilis (5.5–12.0). Тhe communities of the ass. Agrostio stoloniferae–Equisetetum arvensis occupy the richest (10.5–15.0) and alluvial soils (4.0–5.0). They are located on the low level in the riverine and middle zone of the floodplain and are formed by annual flooding on alluvial deposits. The distinguished associations are differentiated by pH (3.0–8.0), mean figures — 4.5–7.0. The communities of the associations Caricetum juncellae, Caricetum gracilis and Caricetum acutae–rostratae are located on the most acidic soil; these of the ass. Equisetetum fluviatilis — on the neutral ones. The associations are distributed by the scale of pasture digression in range 2.5–4.5, mean figures — 3.0–3.9. The communities are used for hay-making. The question of the boundary between the meadow vegetation, lowland swamp and semi-aquatic vegetation remains unsolved. The communities of the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea described in this paper belongs to meadows. Ass. Nardosmietum laevigatae (previously referred to the class Galio-Urticetea Pass. 1967) is included into the order Phragmitetalia W. Koch 1926. The communities of the ass. Agrostio stoloniferae–Equisetetum arvensis have a mesophilic species composition and low moisture values, so they represent a transition between the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea order Molinietalia and class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea. A comparison of species composition of the syntaxa in Komi Republic and that in other regions of the Eastern Europe and the Asian part of Russia showed that the semiaquatic communities of the Komi Republic have low species diversity. It is less than 16 species on sample plot. The richest are communities of the associations Caricetum gracilis and Carici acutae–Phalaroidetum arundinaceae. 101 vascular plant species are recorded in 268 geobotanical relevés of the class Phragmito–Magno-Caricetea. The aboveground phytomass varies from 30–80 g/m2 (Agrostio stoloniferae–Equisetetum arvensis) to 420 г/м2 (Phalaroidetum arundinaceae).

The present study continues a series of publications of the authors on diversity of the meadow vegetation in the floodplains of the Vychegda and Pechora rivers and their tributaries (Komi Republic). The floristic classification of wet meadows of the order Molinietalia Koch 1926 was published early (Shushpanikova, Yamalov, 2013). The results of floristic classification of meadow vegetation belonging to the order Arrhenatheretalia R. Tx. 1937 are discussed in this article. Analysis was based on 383 original relevés of the meadow vegetation of the order Arrhenatheretalia made in accordance with principles of the Braun-Blanquet approach (Braun-Blanquet, 1964; Mirkin and Naumova, 1998). The studies were performed in the floodplains of the Vychegda and Pechora rivers and their tributaries (Sysola, Kazhym, Pozheg, Viled, Usa, Colva, Synya, Sebys, Ilych, Syuzyu, Shchugor). The descriptions were conducted at the study plots of 10×10 m. Plant communities of small size were described within the natural limits. A location, dimensions of community, species composition, species saturation, composition of dominant and co-dominant species, total coverage and height of grass stand, aboveground phytomass production were identified. The abundance of species in meadow communities was recorded using the J. Braun-Blanquet method: r — species occurs sporadically, + — minor species, total coverage less than 1 %, 1 — 1–5 %, 2 — 6–25 % 3 — 26–50 %, 4 — 51–75 %, 5 — 76–100 %. The assessment of environmental parameters was performed by ecological methods of L. G. Ramensky (Ramensky et al., 1956). Syntaxonomic diversity of the meadow vegetation of the order Arrhenatheretalia of the Vychegda and Pechora rivers floodplains presented by 2 unions (Cynosurion R. Tx. 1947 и Festucion pratensis Sipaylova et al. 1985), 7 associations (Festucetum ovinae Turubanova 1986, Festuco pratensis–Deschampsietum caespitosae Turubanova 1986, Anthoxantho odorati–Agrostietum tenuis Sillinger 1933, Festuceto pratensis–Dactyletum glomeratae Dymina 1989 in Korolyuk et Kiprijanova 1998, Amorio repens–Poetum pratensis ass. nov., Equiseto arvensis–Elytrigietum repentis Maraculina 2009, Elytrigio repentis–Bromopsidetum inermis Yamalov 2011. Two new communities without rank are described (Agrostis vinealis, Hypericum maculatum–Phleum pratense). Most plant associations are heterogeneous by their floristic composition and they can be divided into 10 subassociations and 5 variants. The peculiarities of the floristic composition of the above mentioned associations, as well as their distribution and ecology are discussed. The distinguished associations are well differentiated by their elevation level on the floodplains. The meadow communities of Festucetum ovinae are located on the highest floodplains in the inland zone; there is Agrostis vinealis in the streamside zone of the floodplains. The meadow communities of the ass. Anthoxantho odorati–Agrostietum tenuis are located on the low floodplains in the streamside zone. The meadow communities of the associations Festuco pratensis–Deschampsietum caespitosae, Equiseto arvensis–Elytrigietum repentis, Elytrigio repentis–Bromopsidetum inermis, Festuceto pratensis–Dactyletum glomeratae are occupied the medium level floodplains. The meadow communities of the ass. Amorio repens–Poetum pratensis are found at different locations of the floodplain; they are formed under grazing. The described meadows grow on the soils with different ecological indicators. The distinguished associations are differentiated by water level (52.2–73.0), average figures — 55.9–68.9. The meadow communities of the ass. Festucetum ovinae occupy the driest sites of the floodplain; the ass. Anthoxantho odorati–Agrostietum tenuis is located in the wettest floodplains. The meadow communities of the ass. Elytrigio repentis–Bromopsidetum inermis occupy most rich and alluvial soils. They are located on the low ridges in the middle zone of the floodplain and they are formed by annual flooding on alluvial deposits. The distinguished associations are differentiated by pH (4.2–8.0), average figures — 4.9–7.0. The meadow communities with Agrostis vinealis are occupied the most acidic soil. The meadow communities of the ass. Anthoxantho odorati–Agrostietum tenuis are located on the neutral soils. The meadow communities of the most of associations occupy slightly acidic soils. The variability of moisture varies from alternating values to high values. The greatest differences in moisture are demonstrated by the communities of associations Equiseto arvensis–Elytrigietum repentis and Elytrigio repentis–Bromopsidetum inermis located on middle manes on low and medium levels of the floodplains. The associations are differ by the scale of pasture digression in range 3.3–5.0, average figures — 3.8–4.9. The meadow communities with Agrostis vinealis have the highest rates of pasture digression (4.5–5.1). The meadow communities of the ass. Anthoxantho odorati–Agrostietum tenuis have the smallest ones (3.5–3.9). A comparison of species composition of the syntaxa in Komi Republic with communities described in other regions of the Eastern Europe and the Asian part of Russia was carried out. It was shown that the meadow communities of the Komi Republic have low species diversity. Species richness of meadow communities is less than 39 species on trial area. The meadow communities of the ass. Festuco pratensis–Deschampsietum caespitosae are the richest. 195 vascular plant species are recorded in 213 geobotanical descriptions of the order Arrhenatheretalia. The aboveground phytomass varies from 20–40 g/m2 (Festucetum ovinae) to 520 g/m2 (Festuco pratensis–Deschampsietum caespitosae).

Ghorkhod Protected Area (GPA) is located in a transitional zone among different biogeographical units in North Khorassan Province, NE Iran. The study area is mainly a mountainous region in western extensions of Khorassan-Kopet Dagh floristic province. We investigated the floristic composition, life form spectrum and phytogeography of the study area through several random collection efforts and 200 vegetation samples (reléves) in selected vegetation types during 2007–2012. A total of 663 vascular plant species belonging to 367 genera and 81 families are recorded as native and naturalized in GPA. Angiosperms and Dicots are among the most diverse plant groups. The richest plant families are Asteraceae (88 species), Poaceae (78), Lamiaceae (45), Brassicaceae (43), Fabaceae (38), and Caryophyllaceae (32). The genera Allium L. (17 species), Astragalus L. (15) and Cousinia Cass. (12) are the richest ones, however, the majority of the species belongs to oligotypic and monotypic genera. Life form spectrum of the study area is dominated by hemicryptophytes (38.9%) and therophytes (23.4%). Allium transvestiens Vved., Agropyron desertorum Schult., Helictotrichon turcomanicum Czopanov and Piptatherum latifolium (Roshev.) Nevski are recorded as new to Iran. The core flora of the area has the Irano-Turanian origin. However, the wide-range and widespread elements are also well represented in the study area. GPA is inhabited by several endemic, rare and narrow-range plant species, indicating the biodiversity importance of the study area in NE Iran.

The present study dealt with the exploration and documentation of the floristic composition and phyto-diversity of Sitakunda Eco-park, Chittagong, Bangladesh. A total of 412 vascular plant species under 315 genera belonging to 94 plant families have been recorded from the study area during February, 2013 to April, 2015. Out of these recorded taxa, 330 were dicotyledons, 62 were monocotyledons, 5 were gymnosperms and 15 were pteridophytes. Among those, the maximum 144 species belonged to herbs followed by 138, 75 and 55 species as trees, shrubs and climbers, respectively. The species composition among the plant families varied in plant groups. In dicotyledonous group, Euphorbiaceae appeared to be the largest family with 35 species, whereas Poaceae showed the largest family containing 30 species among monocotyledonous group. The highest values of both Shannon-Weiner and Simpson diversity indices have been observed as 3.82 and 0.98, respectively to site D during monsoon season, whereas the lowest values 3.19 and 0.95, respectively of these indices were recorded in site A during summer season.Jahangirnagar University J. The aim of this study was to investigate the floristic composition and diversity of seven urban habitat types in 24 Serbian cities with different climatic affiliation. In each of the 24 cities, we selected 1 ha plots representing a habitat from one of the following groups: square, boulevard, residential area with compact and with open building pattern, city park, and sites with early and mid-succession vegetation stages. All vascular plant species that occur spontaneously in these plots were observed. Data on the main climatic characteristics were collected for each plot, and data on the life forms were obtained for each species recorded. Diagnostic species were identified for each habitat type analyzed, and alpha, beta and gamma diversity were calculated. A total of 674 taxa were recorded in the studied area. Significant differences were observed in habitats by diagnostic species and by life form representation. The lowest alpha and gamma diversity and the dominance of therophytes were observed in habitat types with intensive anthropogenic impact, whereas the highest number was recorded in mid-successional sites and residential areas with a compact building pattern. The analysis showed that habitat type influences species composition much more than climate.

Aims: Trithrinax campestris is one of the palm species with the southernmost distribution in the Neotropics. Despite that the vegetation types in which T. campestris occurs are nowadays heavily threatened by land use and land cover changes, their floristic composition and structure are still to be documented. In order to characterize T. campestris habitats, the aim of this study was to describe the floristic composition of the vegetation types in which this palm occurs and their relationships with different environmental factors. Study area: The survey was conducted in central Argentina in an area comprising the southern extreme of the distribution of T. campestris in the following phytogeographic areas: Espinal, Lowland and Mountain Chaco. Methods: Following the Braun-Blanquet approach we collected 92 floristic relevés recording a total of 601 vascular plant species. Vegetation was classified through the ISOPAM hierarchical analysis. Bioclimatic and elevation data were related to the floristic data through the ISOMAP ordination. Remote-sensed images (Landsat TM, ETM+ and OLI) were used to characterize the fire frequency in the 92 stands. Results: Four vegetation types that differed in floristic composition and in diagnostic species were discriminated: 1.1 Celtis tala/Sida rhombifolia closed forest; 1.2 Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco/Prosopis kuntzei open forest; 2.1 Jarava pseudoichu/Vachellia caven open savanna; and 2.2 Acalypha variabilis/Nassella cordobensis scrubland. The ISOMAP ordination showed that differences in floristic composition were related to elevation, topography and climatic variables.Out of the 92 stands, only 21 showed the occurrence of fires during the period 1999–2018. Conclusions: Our results evidenced that vegetation types (forests, savannas and scrublands) comprising T. campestris developed in a wide range of environmental conditions. This is the first study that focuses on all vegetation types in which T. campestris occurs in central Argentina and it is relevant for conservation and sustainable management of the only native palm species in the flora of this part of the country. The effect of ongoing forest invasion on floristic composition of subtropical montane grasslands was considered by examining vascular plant species frequencies across 13 adjoining areas of grassland, invaded grassland (eucalypt forest <50 years old) and eucalypt forest (>50 years old) on the Bunya Mountains in subtropical eastern Australia. Tree invasion of grasslands over the last 50 years has had substantial facilitative or antagonistic net impacts on populations of many plant species. Increases in species frequency, indicating net facilitation, generally appear to occur earlier in forest development than do decreases in frequency, indicative of net antagonism. Although more than 20% of the flora showed substantial association with either grassland or forest, the dominant ground-stratum species in each habitat were quite similar and very few grassland species were not recorded in grassy forests. Forb species composition appears to change more rapidly after tree invasion than grass species composition. Relatively few forbs preferred forest to grassland, whereas shrubs, trees or lianes were substantially more frequent in forests. Replacement of grasslands by grassy forests would reduce landscape diversity and impact on other values in the Bunya Mountains. However, this study suggests that most, if not all, vascular plants that currently occur on the grasslands will persist in the area provided the grassy character of the eucalypt forests is maintained.

Vegetation dominated by lancewood (Acacia shirleyi) occurs extensively across the Northern Territory and Queensland. The vertebrate species (birds, mammals, reptiles and frogs) composition was sampled at 61 patches of lancewood in the Northern Territory (including 22 patches where quadrats were intensively sampled), and the distribution of species was related to a wide range of environmental characteristics, spatial variables, disturbance and season. Of 165 species recorded from lancewood patches, eight species were recorded from more than half of the sampled patches: Pachycephala rufiventris, Pomatostomus temporalis, Rhipidura leucophrys, Cracticus nigrogularis, Melanodryas cucullata, Geopelia cuneata, G. placida and Macropus robustus. Environmental variation within sampled lancewood sites was described by classification of 51 quadrats into 7 classes, and the 61 patches into 5 classes. Vertebrate species showed limited association with this classification, with a few species associated with the occasional co-dominant tall shrub Macropteranthes kekwickii, other species associated with variation in rockiness or soil texture, and other species associated with variation in the occurrence of Eucalyptus species within lancewood vegetation. An ordination of all quadrats by their vertebrate species composition suggested a loose patterning associated mainly with latitude and, less strongly, soil texture and co-occurring tree/shrub species (notably Eucalyptus and Macropteranthes). Suggesting a depauperate and poorly defined vertebrate community in lancewood, quadrats in small isolated lancewood patches had more species than those in large patches, and this pattern was shown for many individual species. Lancewood patches showed some impact of grazing and logging, but this was generally minor and could not be demonstrated to have any consistent relationship with the abundance of individual species. In contrast, effects of fire were generally more severe, and were negatively associated with the abundance of relatively many species. Lancewood vegetation is not represented in any conservation reserve in the Northern Territory.

Abstract The present paper describes the floristic composition and synecology of steppe-like dry grasslands occurring in a Natura 2000 site in North-Central Greece around the two karstic lakes of Vegoritida and Petron. In total, 245 releves of vascular plant species composition and abundance were sampled and subjected to cluster analysis and ordination analysis. Passive explanatory variables, including environmental parameters as well as indicator values, were used to support the ecological interpretation. Four plant communities were distinguished in the area, namely Artemisia campestris-Dasypyrum villosum, Chrysopogon gryllus-Bothriochloa ischaemum, Satureja montana-Artemisia alba and Stipa capillata-Koeleria macrantha. All communities were classified within the Festuco-Brometea class and the Astragalo-Potentilletalia order. Soil properties (soil reaction, moisture and nutrient content) and meso-climate factors (temperature variation along topographic gradients) were identified as the main factors determining the floristic differentiation among the four communities. The dry grasslands harbor a number of species associated with steppic habitats. We discuss the relict character of the steppe-like vegetation.

The International conference “Flora and conservation in the Caucasus: history and current state of knowledge” dedicated to the 130-year anniversary of the Perkalsky Arboretum took place at 22–25 of May 2019 in Pyatigorsk (Stavropol Territory) on the base of the Pyatigorsk Museum of local lore and natural history. The participants were from 11 cities of Russia and 7 Republics of the Caucasus and represented 14 institutions. Proceedings of the conference were published by the beginning of the meeting the book of abstracts includes 49 papers on the study of vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and fungi, plant communities, as well as the protection of rare and endangered species, unique plant communities, and ecological problems in the Caucasus. The following geobotanical topics were highlighted in 13 papers: forest communities (3 reports), meadow and steppe vegetation (2), xeric open forests (2), communities of ecotone areas (1), structure of populations of rare plant species (3), as well as the history and current status of nature protected areas (2). The great emphasis has been focused on the study of floristic composition and plant populations. Thus, the conference showed that very few studies от vegetation are currently carried out in the Caucasus, and a lot of districts are not affected by the research. The greatest attention is paid to forest vegetation while meadow, steppe, alpine heath and xerophytic communities are studied rather poorly. Besides, there are “white spots” — mire, floodplain and aquatic vegetation. In nowadays, when the anthropogenic impact on the plant cover of the Caucasus is intensively increasing, it is especially important to study natural undisturbed communities preserved in protected natural areas. Another important issue is the conservation of the unique vegetation cover of the whole Caucasus. Thus, the study of vegetation of this region opens a wide field for researchers using various methods of modern plant science.

The results of floristic classification of technogenic vegetation (alliance Chamerio angustifolii–Matricarion hookeri A. Ishbirdin et al. 1996, order Chamerio–Betuletalia nanae Khusainov et al. in Sumina 2012, class Matricario–Poetea arcticae A. Ishbirdin in Sumina 2012) conducted by the Braun-Blanquet method (Braun-Blanquet, 1964; Mirkin, Naumova, 1998) are given. 98 geobotanical relevés, made in 1981–2013 on areas of oil fields and suburbs of the Usinsk city (Komi Republic) (56–60о N, 67–66о E), were involved into analysis (Fig. 1). The ecological parameters like moisture (F) and mineral nitrogen soil enrichment (N) were assessed using the Ellenberg ecological scales (Ellenberg, 1974).
