AbstractIn order to provide valuable guidelines for the conservation of germplasm of Lateolabrax maculatus, the genetic diversity and population structure analysis were evaluated for eight geographic populations along coastal regions of China, using 11 microsatellite DNA markers. The genetic parameters obtained showed that, eight populations can be clustered into two groups, the Northern group and the Southern group, concordant with their geographical positions. The UPGMA tree constructed according to the Nei’s genetic distance along with the structure analysis and discriminant analysis of principal component also supported this result. This might be explained by the geographic separation and the divergent environmental conditions among the populations. It's worth noting that, QD (Qingdao) population from northern area was assigned to the Southern group and showed a close genetic relationship and similar genetic constitution with the southern populations. We speculated that large scales of anthropogenic transportation of wild fries from QD populations to the southern aquaculture areas in history should be the primary cause. The populations from GY (Ganyu), RD (Rudong) and BH (Binhai) had higher genetic diversity and showed limited genetic exchange with other populations, indicating better conservation of the natural resources in these regions. All populations were indicated to have experienced bottleneck events in history.

Abstract. Twenty-one coastal rivers located on the western Peruvian margin were analyzed to determine the relationships between fluvial and environmental processes and sediment grain properties such as grain size, roundness and sphericity. Modern gravel beds were sampled along a north-south transect on the western side of the Peruvian Andes, and at each site the long a-axis and the intermediate b-axis of about 500 pebbles were measured. Morphometric properties such as river gradient, catchment size and discharge of each drainage basin were determined and compared against measured grain properties. Grain size data show a constant value of the D50 percentile all along the coast, but an increase in the D84 and D96 values and an increase in the ratio of the intermediate and the long axis from south to north. Our results then yield better-sorted and less spherical material in the south when compared to the north. No correlations were found between the grain size and the morphometric properties of the river basins when considering the data together. Grouping the results in a northern and southern group shows better-sorted sediments and lower D84 and D96 values for the southern group of basins. Within the two groups, correlations were found between the grain size distributions and morphometric basins properties. Our data indicates that fluvial transport is the dominant process controlling the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment in the southern basins while we propose a geomorphic control on the grain size properties in the northern basins. Sediment properties in the northern and southern basins could not be linked to differences in tectonic controls. On the other hand, the north-south trend in the grain size and in the b/a ratio seems controlled by a shift towards a more humid climate and towards a stronger El Nino impact in northern Peru. But, generally speaking, the resulting trends and differences in sediment properties seem controlled by differences in the complex geomorphic setting along the arc and forearc regions.

Abstract The stump-tailed porcupine, Coendou rufescens, is a widely distributed but scarcely documented species inhabiting the Andean region of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and an isolated population in Bolivia. Despite the wide distribution different aspects on its biology and ecology are still unknown. We present an update to the distribution of C. rufescens, and recent observations on the anatomy, natural history, and conservation in Colombia. For this, we described the male genitalia and present data on reproductive periods, plants used and consumed, and threats. The distribution of C. rufescens comprises 12 ecoregions in an area of 376,225 km2 for the northern group (Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) and 393 km2 for the southern group (Bolivia). The highest elevational record is in Ecuador (4387 m), being the porcupine inhabiting at highest elevations. The anatomy of the glans is similar to that observed in Coendou quichua and constitutes the second species of Coendou with available information on glans morphology. C. rufescens consumes fruits and leaves of potato cider (Sechium edule: Cucurbitaceae) and woody shrub (Bejaria: Ericacea), and usually perches even in exotic species such as pines. Finally, common treats for the species in Colombia are related to hunting pressures, predation by domestic dogs, and roadkills.

Abstract We surveyed 1,115 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA sequence from three gene regions in 66 Curve-billed Thrashers (Toxostoma curvirostre) taken from throughout their range. We found that populations sorted unambiguously into three groups. Two of these groups, the Curvirostre and Palmeri groups, have been known for many years because of their distinctive phenotypic characteristics, and their status was recently confirmed with an intensive morphometric analysis. The third (southern) group consists of populations in Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico. The strong morphological and mtDNA distinctiveness of the Curvirostre and Palmeri groups suggests that they warrant species status. We recommend that more specimens of the southern group be obtained prior to formal taxonomic recognition of this form. Coalescence analyses suggest that the Curvirostre group has undergone a recent population increase, whereas the Palmeri group seems to have been more stable in its Sonoran Desert range.

The genus Typhleotris contains three poorly known blind fish species, inhabiting aquifers in the limestone plateau of south-western Madagascar. Until recently these species were known from only few localities, and their pattern of genetic differentiation remains poorly studied. In this study we analyse 122 Typhleotris tissue samples collected from 12 localities, spanning the entire known range of the genus, and use DNA sequences to assign these samples to the three species known. The phylogeny based on the mitochondrial marker cox1 revealed three main clades corresponding to the three species: Typhleotris madagascariensis, T. mararybe and T. pauliani, differing by uncorrected pairwise sequence divergences of 6.3-9.8%. The distribution ranges of the three species overlapped widely: T. mararybe was collected only in a southern group of localities, T. madagascariensis was found in both the southern and the central group of localities, and T. pauliani occurred from the northernmost site to the southern group of localities; yet the three species did not share haplotypes in two nuclear genes, except for three individuals that we hypothesize are hybrids of T. pauliani with T. madagascariensis and T. mararybe. This pattern of concordant mitochondrial and nuclear divergence despite sympatry strongly supports the status of all three taxa as separate species. Phylogeographic structure was obvious in T. madagascariensis, with two separate shallow mitochondrial clades occupying (1) the central vs. (2) the southern group of populations, and in T. pauliani, with separate mitochondrial clades for (1) the northern vs. (2) the central/southern populations. The widespread occurrence of these three cave fish species suggests that the aquifers in south-western Madagascar have at least in the past allowed episodic dispersal and gene flow of subterraneous organisms, whereas the phylogeographic pattern of T. madagascariensis and T. pauliani provides evidence for isolation and loss of connectivity in the more recent past.

Acanthochiton rubrolineatus (Cryptoplacidae, Neoloricata, Polyplacophora) has a narrow distribution range along the seacoasts of China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. We collected 238 samples from eight localities along the Chinese coast, and analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure with COI, 16S-rRNA and 28S-rRNA gene sequences. All analyses based on combined sequences of COI and 16S-rRNA suggested that there was evident genetic differentiation between the northern populations (YT, WH, DL, QD, LYG) and southern populations (ZS, YH, XM) of A. rubrolineatus. The haplotype distribution pattern and genetic diversity based on 28S-rRNA sequences also supported the genetic divergence between the two groups. Both groups had experienced population expansion after the ice age of Pleistocene, and an additional population bottleneck had happened in the southern group in recent history, which led to low genetic diversity of mitochondrial DNA and abnormally high diversity of nuclear DNA in this group. Our results suggested that the protection on A. rubrolineatus is necessary, and the northern and southern group should be protected separately.

The stories published in this issue of the Bulletin are from the same stock as the tale of Suto and Tato given in Vol. III, Part I, which I had the good fortune to publish with the most kind help of the late Major E. B. Soane. whose premature death we have to deplore so deeply. The Kurdish in which our stories are written may be termed the Central dialect of the Northern group according to E. B. Soane's classification. The author, Molla Said Kazi of Kurdistan, was a learned Kurd from Nahri, the capital of Shamsdinan. Indeed, we see in the text some characteristics which can only be met with in the Northern group, such as the plural in īd, the termination rā, the preposition zhe (from), which is only used in the Northern group and replaces la which has the same value in the Southern group; and the preterite hābū (he was), which only extends as far south as Rawandiz, whose dialect is decisively Southern. But on the other hand, there are some peculiarities which lead one to think that this Shamsdinan dialect is not a pure Northern group dialect, but may present a transition to the Southern group. For example this dialect uses indifferently as the genitive particle ä and ī it also makes indiscriminate use of the preposition zhe or la. These, of course, are only faint signs, but one can hope that further careful investigations may furnish other proofs. Anyhow, we must remember that Molla Said was born in the Nahia of Girdi, i.e. the most southward part of this qazā.
