scholarly journals A comparison of the qualitative analysis tools GABEK/WinRelan® and ATLAS.ti™

In recent years, qualitative research became an increasing methodical approach besides quantitative analysis. For that, there are approx. 20 software packages. Two of them are GABEK/WinRelan® and ATLAS.ti™, which are less used than others. The aims of this study are (1) to compare directly both tools with each other by applying the tools, using a pre-interview and (2) to conduct expert interviews to come to a better understanding of how and why either GABEK/WinRelan® or ATLAS.ti™is used. As qualitative research is helpful to answer questions associated with hypothesis-generating research processes, such as quantitative methods, this paper aims (3) how those qualitative approaches can be analyzed by computer-assisted software. This paper conducted a literature review of both CAQDAS and applied the tools by using a pre-interview for the first comparison of both tools. In the further research, it is planned to conduct expert interviews with users to collect data for a deeper direct comparison of both tools. The results at this stage show that (1) there is no direct comparison of both tools, (2) GABEK/WinRelan® is less know than ATLAS.ti™ and (3) there are differences between the two tools, such as up-to-dateness and user friendliness. The paper concludes at this stage, that both tools have their advantages and disadvantages. GABEK/WinRelan® is with its “Gestalten”-approach (perceptive appearance of holistic processing of complexity) is a deep analysis tool, whereas ATLAS.ti™ has many functions, will be kept up-to-date and is more widespread within the scientific community.

PurposeThe objective of this study is to examine the nature of cryptocurrencies, risks involved in using it due to its volatile nature, advantages, disadvantages and its functions as money.Design/methodology/approachThis is an inductive approach to a descriptive analysis (Qualitative research). In order to come to an adequate conclusion, we reviewed several studies and articles previously published in this field related to our research questions, and then explored the nature of Cryptocurrencies, their advantages and disadvantages, risks associated with cryptocurrency usage and their user-friendliness in Saudi Arabia.FindingsThe findings of this study reveal that anonymity and concealment are important aspects of cryptocurrencies. This system does not follow a transparent process that can make it parallel to conventional fiat currency.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough this study focuses on the issue of trust, it fails to recognize more technological factors hampering its transaction mechanism instead of enhancing it, owing to a lack of facts and knowledge.Practical implicationsLike conventional transaction system users must sign their crypto transactions that others must duly verify easily. Once a promise is made, one will not be able to back out of it until it is protected from revocation by the signer.Originality/valueIn comparison with reviewed literature, this study focuses more on the issue of volatility, which accounts for the fact that cryptocurrency has not been accepted as a permanent tool of monetary policy. Additionally, the study finds that the Saudi public is largely pessimistic toward such currencies.

Internet-mediated research (IMR) has grown expansively since the start of the 21st Century in scope, range of methodological possibilities, and breadth of penetration across disciplines and research domains. However, the use of IMR approaches to support qualitative research has lagged behind its application in supporting quantitative methods. This chapter discusses the possibilities of using IMR methods in qualitative research and considers the issues and debates that have led some qualitative researchers to be reluctant to consider IMR as a viable alternative to traditional offline methods. The chapter adopts an optimistic stance on the potential for qualitative IMR and outlines a range of possible methods and strategies, as well as examples of successful (and less successful) studies. Practical advice on tools, procedures, and guidelines for good design practice is offered. A comment on likely future scope, methods, emerging techniques, and developments in qualitative IMR is presented.

Intellectual property (IP) infringement is widely researched in behavioural studies with manifold quantitative and qualitative research. The current chapter focuses on qualitative research and gives an introduction to how data from expert interviews and websites of relevant stakeholders can be analysed to understand and interpret IP infringement applying triangulation. This chapter selects the comprehensive perspective of the entire business and institutional environment in an international context, focusing on the social-cultural, legal, economic, political, and technological framework in different countries, which determines business activities. It answers three research questions on past, current, and future activities regarding IP with data from forty-six organizations (expert interviews, website analyses). The analysis of the data with Computer Assisted/Aided Qualitative Data AnalysiS (CAQDAS) follows four steps: (1) organizing the material; (2) coding; (3) searching; and (4) modelling and interpreting. The analysis revealed that first, there were several activities regarding IP that have been applied by different stakeholders, second, the present status of IP from the point of view of the different stakeholders has a strong legal aspect, and third, a cross-national collaboration for enforcement and harmonizing legislation is seen important for the future of IP specifically by governmental bodies. Overall, these findings allow for recommendations not only for legislators but also for industry and organizations lobbying for more lenient IP rights leading to a bright future for IP.

SummaryQualitative research has a rich tradition in the study of human social behaviour and cultures. Its general aim is to develop concepts which help us to understand social phenomena in, wherever possible, natural rather than experimental settings, to gain an understanding of the experiences, perceptions and/or behaviours of individuals, and the meanings attached to them. The effective application of qualitative methods to other disciplines, including clinical, health service and education research, has a rapidly expanding and robust evidence base. Qualitative approaches have particular potential in psychiatry research, singularly and in combination with quantitative methods. This article outlines the nature and potential application of qualitative research as well as attempting to counter a number of misconceptions.

The article is concerned with substantiating a methodical approach to the assessment of organizational culture. In today’s business environment, organizational culture plays an important role in the successful work of the organization, serves as the basis for the growth and increase of its effectiveness. The article is aimed at the theoretical generalizing the methods of diagnosis, assessment and analysis of organizational culture and substantiating the methodical approach to its assessment. A theoretical generalization of the main approaches to the assessment of organizational culture was carried out and, based upon its results, it was determined that all existing approaches involve either qualitative or quantitative assessment. Taking into account the variety of approaches and the advantages of quantitative methods, it is substantiated that it is advisable to use a formalized approach (quantitative methods) to assess organizational culture. Also the main approaches to the assessment of organizational culture are systematized, with a special emphasis on quantitative methods. The goals, methods and procedures of various approaches are analyzed, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of individual methods of assessment of organizational culture are described. Thus, for a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of organizational culture, it is advisable to conduct a comprehensive assessment, taking into account the internal and external factors of organizational culture. As result of the study, it is generalized that the parameters of the assessment of organizational culture should include the following groups: communications (C); management (M); motivation and morality (M); work (W); adaptability (A); strategy and mission (S). As a result of the research, a methodical approach to the assessment of organizational culture was proposed, which allows determining the level of organizational culture. The advantages of the proposed approach are that it has an applied character, a high degree of formalization, is quite easy to use, takes into account both the internal and the external aspects of organizational culture.

The issues of formation and evaluation of the business reputation of the enterprise have been updated. Existing methods and approaches to assessing the level of business reputation of companies, their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed and systematized. The problems of estimation of business reputation of water supply companies are covered. It is determined that the assessment should be made taking into account the specificity of activity and sectoral affiliation of enterprises, as well as their form of ownership. The necessity to develop a methodology for assessing the level of goodwill on the basis of calculating the integrated indicators of the level of stakeholders' interaction of water supply companies. An analysis of existing approaches to assessing goodwill has shown that each group of methods, both quantitative and qualitative, has certain advantages and disadvantages. The most appropriate methods for assessing goodwill, such as: assessing goodwill as an excess of market value over the value of its net assets; estimation by the excess profit method; Brand Finance Appraisal; evaluation using a multiplier; method of options; expert method, were identified. The use of qualitative approaches to the assessment of the goodwill of the water supply companies was justified. Using quality methods, you can manage business reputation and measure in which direction it will change over time. It is noted that the implementation of goodwill assessment is complicated by the diversity of interests of both individual groups, and interests within an individual stakeholder group. It is determined that the level of stakeholder interaction is a set of integrated indicators of interaction of each of the stakeholder groups on the basis of which the goodwill and measures taken to form and implement its management strategy are assessed . It is proposed to assess the level of business reputation of water supply companies based on the method of expert evaluation using the integrated indicator of the level of engagement. This article describes the qualitative approach used to generate and interpret the quantitative study reported by Song and colleagues’ (2020) in their article, “What counts as an ‘environmental’ issue? Differences in environmental issue conceptualization across race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.” Song and colleagues (2020) describe the results of a survey documenting that, in the United States, White and high-SES respondents perceive environmental issues differently than their non-White and lower-SES counterparts, reflecting structural differences in environmental risks. While Song and colleagues (2020) discuss the survey results in detail, the discussion of the qualitative research that led to the creation of that survey was limited due to space constraints. The current article provides a more holistic account of the methods behind the Song and colleagues (2020) study by discussing the qualitative component of the research in detail. In addition to discussing how the qualitative research complements and critically informs the findings reported by Song et al., we also consider the broader implications and value of integrating qualitative and quantitative methods in environmental psychology.

This chapter documents the ethnographic context in which the interviews and participant observation were conducted for the study presented in this book. It also situates the study within the context of narrative inquiry and develops arguments about the role of self-reflexivity in doing ethnography at “home” and producing qualitative forms of knowledge that are based on personal, experiential, and cultural narratives. It is argued that there is significant interest in the adoption of interpretive methods or qualitative research in psychology. The qualitative approaches in psychology present a provocative and complex vision of how the key concepts related to describing and interpreting cultural codes, social practices, and lived experience of others are suffused with both poetical and political elements of culture. The epistemological and ontological assumptions undergirding qualitative research reflect multiple “practices of inquiry” and methodologies that have different orientations, assumptions, values, ideologies, and criterion of excellence.

Feminist research is described in terms of its purposes of addressing women’s lives, advocacy for women, analysis of gender oppression, working for social justice, and transformation of society. Feminist critiques of social science research are reviewed in relation to the development of methodological and epistemological positions. Feminist research is viewed as contributing to the transformation of science from empiricism to postmodernism. Reflexivity, collaboration, power analysis, and advocacy are discussed as common practices of feminist qualitative research. Several qualitative approaches to research are described in relation to feminist research goals, with illustrations of feminist research included. Validity and voice are identified as particular challenges in the conduct of feminist qualitative research. Intersectionality and double consciousness are reviewed as feminist contributions to the transformation of science. Some emerging and innovative forms of feminist qualitative research are highlighted in relation to potential future directions.
