In order to investigate effect of soil moisture, Orobanche seeds were pre-conditioned in three different soil moisture conditions. The germination percentage was found to be highest (48.31%) in normal soil moisture condition and lowest (4.6%) in flooded soil moisture condition. This indicates that Orobanche seeds are unable to survive for a long period in water logged conditions. In response to stimulant pH, Orobanche solmsii seeds showed significantly a high germination percentage (65.27%) at pH value 6.5 and it declined progressively with the increase of acidic and alkaline conditions. However, seeds appeared to be more sensitive to alkaline rather than acidic condition. The study of effect of light showed that exposure of seeds to continuous light during pre and postconditioning period inhibited seed germination. The inhibition was more effective when seeds were exposed to light during post conditioning phase rather than during pre- conditioning phase.ECOPRINT 22: 57-62, 2015

Seeds from 55 populations of native Alberta red-osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera Michx.) were collected over 2 years (1984 and 1985) to determine the range of variability for seed germination and the effect of ecoregion and moisture conditions in the collection sites on this trait. Each year the unscarified seeds were stored at 3 °C for 30 days, stratified at 3 °C for an additional 30 days and then incubated on an 8 h light: 16 h dark cycle at a temperature of 25:10 °C (light:dark) for germination. A wide range of germination percentages was observed among populations collected in any 1 year. However, the variability was not due to the ecoregion or moisture condition of the collection site. Germination percentage of populations collected in 1984 and 1985 formed five and seven groups, respectively. A study involving eight sites that were common to 1984, 1985, and 1986 revealed a significant effect of population on seed germination. This population effect was not obscured by the combined effects of year, precipitation, temperature, and seed size. The year effect was significant only when population was used as a covariate. Precipitation during seed formation significantly influenced germination performance even after adjustments were made for population and year. Seed germination in red-osier dogwood appears to be influenced by the population from which the seeds are collected and by yearly environmental fluctuations. Therefore, germination studies in this species must include seeds from diverse populations collected over several years. Seed priming refers to seed enhancement methods that stimulate seed metabolism. This study evaluated the genetic diversity of hydro priming efficacy in 27 different genotypes of rice under dry to wet soil moisture conditions. The genotypes included 21 genotypes of Oryza sativa, five genotypes of Oryza glaberrima, and one genotype of NERICA (New Rice for Africa). The treated rice seeds were sown in plastic boxes under four soil moisture conditions (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (w/w)). The genotypes were categorized into six groups based on growth parameters using hierarchical cluster analysis. Furthermore, emergence properties were investigated by using principal component analysis based on the mean emergence time of control and primed seeds. Seed priming enhanced growth performance under the moderate dry conditions of 10% and 15% soil moisture. Meanwhile, priming efficacy was low in water stress conditions of 5% and 20% soil moisture. There were wide-ranging genotypic differences of priming efficacy under 20% soil moisture condition. Our findings indicate that the anaerobic-tolerant genotypes tend to exhibit priming efficacy under high soil moisture conditions. Furthermore, one group included all upland genotypes of Oryza sativa. This group originally adapted to 10% and 15% of dry conditions, and seed priming improved their features greatly.

A roaded catchment (RC) is a representative type of artificial catchment for rainwater harvesting. The rainfall–runoff threshold value of the RC is the main factor which influences the system efficiency and cost. Antecedent soil moisture condition is an important factor which impacts on the determination of the rainfall–runoff threshold value. In this study, rainfall–antecedent soil moisture condition–runoff relationships and the potential efficiency of RCs are presented. Rainfall and runoff data monitored at research sites in Merredin and Mount Barker are used to determine this relationship. Two antecedent moisture criteria; Antecedent Moisture Conditions (AMC) and Average Antecedent Precipitation (AAP) are used to analyse the relationship between previous rainfall and soil moisture for each RC. Monitored results show that AMC is not that suitable to show the relationship between rainfall and antecedent soil moisture condition of the RC in the dryland of Western Australia and it is recommended to use AAP to determine this relationship.

Successful invasive plant eradication is rare, because the methods used target the adult stage, not taking into account the development capacity of a large seedbank. Heating by microwave was considered, because it offers a means to quickly reach the temperature required for loss of seed viability and inhibition of germination. Previous results were not encouraging, because homogeneous and deep-wave penetration was not achieved, and the various parameters that can affect treatment effectiveness were incompletely addressed. This study aimed to determine, under experimental conditions, the best microwave treatment to inhibit invasive species seed germination in terms of power (2, 4, 6 kW) and duration (2, 4, 8 min) of treatments and depending on soil moisture (10%, 13%, 20%, 30%) and seed burial depth (2, 12 cm). Three invasive species were tested: Bohemian knotweed, giant goldenrod, and jimsonweed. The most effective treatments required relatively high power and duration (2kW8min, 4kW4min, 6kW2min, and 6kW4min; 4kW8min and 6kW8min were not tested for technical reasons), and their effectiveness diminished with increasing soil moisture with germination percentage between 0% and 2% for the lowest soil moisture, 0% and 56% for intermediate soil moisture, and 27% and 68% in control treatments. For the highest soil moisture, only 2kW8min and 4kW4min reduced germination percentage between 2% and 19%. Occasionally, germination of seeds located at the 12-cm depth was more strongly affected. Giant goldenrod seeds were the most sensitive, probably due to their small size. Results are promising and justify further experiments before developing a field microwave device to treat large volumes of soil infested by invasive seed efficiently and with reasonable energy requirements. Other types of soil, in terms of texture and organic matter content, should be tested in future experiments, because these factors influence soil water content and, consequently, microwave heating.

The decomposition of oxamyl in four soils under moist conditions was measured in incubation experiments at 15 deg C. Half-lives of oxamyl in soils with moisture tensions of approx. -9.8 X 103 Pa were 13 days in a clay loam, 14 days in a loamy sand, 34 days in a peaty sand and 39 days in a humic loamy sand. The rate of oxamyl decomposition in the clay loam decreased with decreasing soil moisture content down to values for below wilting point. Oxamyl decomposition in the humic loamy sand decreased with decreasing soil moisture content, but increased sharply in the very dry range. ABSTRACT The sequence of drought events in the Northeast of Brazil in recent decades raises attention to the importance of studying this phenomenon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the duration and severity of drought events from 1988 to 2018 in hydrographic basins of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using two drought indexes: Standardized Soil Moisture Index and Soil Moisture Condition Index, calculated based on data of the Soil Moisture Project of the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative. The duration of the droughts was determined considering the months between their beginning and end, and their severity was based on the area formed in the graph between the curve of the index and the x-axis. The soil moisture database showed to be a promising tool for the analysis and monitoring of drought events in the Northeast region of Brazil, mainly for analysis and monitoring of drought events. The indexes allowed the evaluation of the drought phenomenon over the 30-year period, showing increases from 2012, which were more pronounced in the Semiarid region. The hydrographic basins responded differently to a same event, depending on the climate characteristics of the region in which they are located. Consecutive years with rainfall below the historical mean increased the magnitude of the droughts, as found for the 2012-2017 period, in which the indexes presented delays to return to more favorable values, showing the effect that one drought year has on the following year.

This paper describes the dispersal–germination characteristics of seeds of 77 native tree species in a seasonal monsoon forest in Uttaranchal state, northern India. Results indicate that 50% of the species dispersed in the hot, dry summer months, 18% during the rainy season, 23% during the cold season and the remainder in late spring. Germination tests on fresh and laboratory-stored seeds revealed a relationship between morphological features of the fruit and both germination percentage and mean germination time (MGT). Highest mean germination (50%) was for dry-dehiscent fruits with winged wind-dispersed seeds, followed by dry-dehiscent fruits with non-winged seeds (38%) and seeds of dry-indehiscent fruits (37%). Lowest germination (29%) was for seeds from fleshy or pulpy fruits. MGT followed the reverse course. Germination data for seeds stored dry in the laboratory during one seeding cycle indicated six patterns of seed germination: (1) average germination percentage of fresh seeds lower than that of stored seeds, indicating an after-ripening requirement; (2) initial high germination percentage followed by low values, indicating a steep to moderate decline in viability following harvest; (3) no germination after 1 or 2 months of seed storage, due to complete loss of viability, indicating short seed longevity; (4) fresh seed germination in some species equalled the average germination value of stored seeds, indicating constant germination for one whole seeding cycle; (5) germination of both fresh and stored seeds remained consistently low throughout the season, indicating a requirement for some kind of pre-treatment or having poor quality of seeds; (6) initial high germination followed by decline and again increase, showing a seasonal rhythm of germination.
