The study and analysis of different aspects of language as an effective means of communication is the main concern of linguistics. Form, meaning, and function are some of the key aspects of language while analyzing the utterances used in communication or interaction. This article makes an attempt at examining the relationships between form, the physical appearance; and function, the illocutionary force of English sentences. This study adopted systematic review and content analysis as the methods in which conclusions were derived by synthesizing the examples and findings found in multiple resources. The conclusions drawn in this study were that forms are straight forward while determining their meaning is obfuscatory; and the relationship between form and meaning is arbitrary. When language is in use to serve communicative needs, there is often found multiple relationship between the form of an utterance and its function, the illocutionary act.

The aim of the paper is neither to engage in a purist fight against loan words in Latvian, nor to oppose a correct and appropriate usage of foreign words, as borrowing is an inevitable process. The main concern is incorrect, inappropriate and often tautological usage of foreign words, indicating insufficient knowledge of lexicology, deficiencies in the language culture or journalists’ poor professional attitude. The paper analyses various examples of journalists’ language from TV shows from the first half of 2019, focusing on the usage of foreign words. At first, it might seem that they are euphemisms; however, the assessment of their meaning and function makes it clear that it is not so. The barrage of foreign words sometimes hides the lack of clarity of thought, and the use of barbarisms is an evidence of poor professionalism. Moreover, it also hints at unwillingness to understand the situation, caused by lack of experience, knowledge or time, or deliberate use of muddled rhetoric.

This article examines the connections between the economic, social and cultural aspects of a rather peculiar practice – events of domestic hospitality which involve a meal. In formats ranging from the formal dinner party to impromptu potluck events, an economic good is transferred from one household to another, ostensibly as a unilateral gift although often prompting reciprocity. Illustrated with results from a mixed methods re-study of the practice of eating out in England, we explore how, and under which circumstances, reciprocity is, or is not, observed. We discuss how to conceptualise this activity in terms of production and consumption, modes of provision, gifts and reciprocity, practice and culture. Interpreting the meaning and function of domestic entertaining, and explaining why it is so highly regarded, is shown to depend on how repetition is aligned with other specific characteristics of the practice. We draw out some implications for the relationship between production and consumption, for social relations under different modes of provision, and for alternative ways of delivering services.

Space and architecture are two interrelated and encompassing concepts. However, space has a broad meaning in terms of location, privacy, and function such that the relationship between two spaces creates a different atmosphere and impression. A lot of studies have been conducted on space but there is no much focus on the concept of 'in-between space'. This research was, therefore, aimed at exploring in-between space in order to create a clear understanding and identify its concept in Batak Toba vernacular architecture. A content analysis method was adopted and this involves analyzing texts and images related to in-between space and Batak Toba architecture. The results showed the concept as an overlap created by two spaces in order to feel the atmosphere of both simultaneously. It was also discovered not to be a definitive space but found in the Batak Toba architecture to create a relationship between privacy, function, and environment. This means it is a key feature of the architecture and also expected to be a fundamental element in the modern Toba Batak architecture. These results are expected to serve as the basis for further in-depth research and to be applied in other ethnic architectures.

AbstractEvidence from animal models indicates that exposure to an obesogenic or hyperglycemic intrauterine environment adversely impacts offspring kidney development and renal function. However, evidence from human studies has not been evaluated systematically. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize current research in humans that has examined the relationship between gestational obesity and/or diabetes and offspring kidney structure and function. Systematic electronic database searches were conducted of five relevant databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, EMBASE, MEDLINE and Scopus). Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines were followed, and articles screened by two independent reviewers generated nine eligible papers for inclusion. Six studies were assessed as being of ‘neutral’ quality, two of ‘negative’ and one ‘positive’ quality. Observational studies suggest that offspring exposed to a hyperglycemic intrauterine environment are more likely to display markers of renal dysfunction and are at higher risk of end-stage renal disease. There was limited and inconsistent evidence for a link between exposure to an obesogenic intrauterine environment and offspring renal outcomes. Offspring renal outcome measures across studies were diverse, with a large variation in offspring age at follow-up, limiting comparability across studies. The collective current body of evidence suggests that intrauterine exposure to maternal obesity and/or diabetes adversely impacts renal programming in offspring, with an increased risk of kidney disease in adulthood. Further high-quality, longitudinal, prospective cohort studies that measure indicators of offspring renal development and function, including fetal kidney volume and albuminuria, at standardized follow-up time points, are warranted.

Moving away from the structure of traditional texts, this chapter follows the journey of oxygen molecules as they move from inspired air to their point of use in mitochondria, with some digressions along the way to cover other relevant aspects of respiratory physiology. The chapter encompasses all the key aspects of respiratory physiology and also highlights physiological alterations that occur under both general and regional anaesthesia, moving the physiological principles discussed into daily anaesthetic practice. The chapter explores relevant anatomy of the airways, lungs, and pleura. The histology and function of the airway lining and alveoli are described, so illustrating the importance of pulmonary defence mechanisms for protecting the internal milieu of the body from this large and fragile interface with the outside world. Key principles and concepts including resistance, compliance, and diffusion are all discussed in their clinical context. Concepts relating to the mechanics of breathing and the control of airway diameter are considered along with lung volumes and their measurement. Both the central and peripheral mechanisms involved in the control of breathing are discussed with particular attention to the impact of anaesthesia. The relationship between ventilation and perfusion and the carriage of oxygen and carbon dioxide are all discussed in detail. The principles behind key respiratory measurements such as dead space, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, and shunt are all described. Overall the chapter provides a comprehensive review of respiratory physiology as well as including additional aspects of variation that occur under anaesthesia.

It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.
