This article will describe the approach to dysphagia education in a classroom setting at the University of Connecticut (UCONN), explore the disparity between student performance in schools vs. health care settings that was discovered at UCONN, and offer suggestions for practicum supervisors in medical settings to enhance student acquisition of competence.

AbstractObjectives: To introduce and evaluate a computer assisted learning programme in undergraduate psychiatry (CAL-PSYCH).Methods: An interactive e-learning environment was created within the University College Dublin portal to assist students in acquiring the necessary skills in undergraduate psychiatry. The pilot phase consisted of providing their lectures on-line on the interactive site. Data were gathered from the last group of students in 2001 (pre-CAL-PSYCH) and the first group of students using CAL-PSYCH in 2002. We included assessment of percentage of students accessing the site, attendance rates at face-to-face lectures and tutorials, and also a feedback questionnaire from students who accessed the site.Results: All responders had used CAL-PSYCH. Students gave higher ratings for quality and interactivity of lectures compared with the pre-CAL-PSYCH curriculum. Students also expressed enthusiasm about CAL-PSYCH and encouraged us to develop it further.Conclusions: Computer-assisted learning environments such as CAL-PSYCH provide the opportunity to bring modern e-learning techniques to medical education, and may provide a new model for life-long learning in medicine.

This paper examines the recent development of a computer-assisted learning program—in Practice— at the School of Health Science, in the University of Wales Swansea. The project, which began in 2001, was developed in close collaboration with The Meningitis Trust, the aim being to produce a software package to increase nursing students’ knowledge of meningitis-related illnesses, and to enhance their decision-making and problem-solving skills by using lifelike scenarios. It incorporates two multimedia meningitis modules incorporating the use of text, film, and sound, in which students are presented with information about the illness (symptoms, treatment etc.), and are required to use their knowledge to make decisions at various key points. A general discussion of decision-making theories and CAL design principles is presented, which has provided a foundation for the main design aspects of the package. This is followed by an outline of how the program was created to promote students’ application of knowledge and their decision-making and problemsolving skills. Results from an evaluation questionnaire are presented. Consideration is also given as to how the program can be extended.DOI: 10.1080/0968776042000339808

 El estudio evaluó la motilidad espermática y su efecto postdescongelación en semen caprino, en dos medios comerciales (Andromed® y TwoStep®) y diferentes protocolos de congelación (medio completo, con adicción del 10% de yema de huevo, semen centrifugado y sobrenadante seminal), se utilizaron machos de la raza alpina de la Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander Ocaña, el semen fue colectado con electroeyaculador, una vez los medios terminados y parte de los contenidos seminales enteros o centrifugados mezclados, se estabilizó por 2 horas, se envasó en pajillas de 0,5 cc y se congela en vapores de nitrógeno por 10 minutos, las pajillas se llevaron al laboratorio de Andrología de la Universidad del Zulia y por medio del sistema C.A.S.A.(Computer Assisted Sperm Análisis) se evaluaron los parámetros de motilidad como velocidad curvilínea (VCL), velocidad rectilínea (VSL), velocidad lineal (VAP), índice de linealidad (LIN), índice de rectitud (STR), índice de oscilación (ALH), Amplitud media del desplazamiento lateral de la cabeza del espermatozoide (BCF), los datos fueron analizados por medio del procedimiento GLM de SAS versión 9.0; los mejores índices de motilidad (VCL, ALH, BCF) fueron expresados enel tratamiento de contenido seminal centrifugado en medio Andromed®. (p≤0,001))La mejor progresividad espermática (VSL,LIN,STR)se presentó el tratamiento de Semen completo de caprino, criopreservado en medio comercial TwoStep®. ABSTRACT  The study evaluated the effect sperm motility and sperm post-thawing in goats, two commercial means (Andromed ® and Two Step ®) and different freezing protocols (complete medium with 10% addition of the egg yolk, semen centrifuged supernatant and seminal ), we used males of the Alpine race of the University Francisco de Paula Santander Ocaña, semen was collected with electroejaculator once finished media and part of the whole and centrifuged seminal contents mixed, stabilized by two hours, packed in 0.5 cc straws and frozen in nitrogen vapor for 10 min, the straws were taken to the laboratory of Andrology at the University of Zulia and through CASA system (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis) were evaluated motility parameters such as curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight line velocity (VSL), linear velocity (VAP), linearity index (LIN), straightness index (STR) Oscillation Index (ALH ) average amplitude of the lateral displacement of the sperm head (BCF), the data were analyzed by the GLM procedure of SAS version 9.0, the highest rates of motility (VCL, ALH, BCF) were expressed in the treatment of seminal content centrifugation Andromed ® medium. The way in which we learn anatomy has changed exponentially over the decades and students now have access to lecture notes, textbooks, computer-assisted programmes, and a wide variety of internet based information. This study explored which resources were the most (and least) useful for a group of first year, undergraduate, medical students, with minimal prior content exposure (aged 18 and 19 years old, n = 76), over an 18 month period. Anatomy websites were found to be the most useful (30%), followed by tutorials (20%) and lectures (19%). A total of 13% found the university computer-assisted learning (CAL) platform least useful. We subsequently enhanced our ‘urogenital’ CAL anatomy module, with inclusion of new and updated images, videos and tutorials, as well as, digital and printed 3D-models. A post-intervention survey (n = 81) showed an increase from 12% to 27% for CAL as being most useful, and a decrease from 13% to 3% as being least useful. Our results provided a snapshot of students’ preferences in studying anatomy, and highlighted the importance of digital platforms and the need for evaluating our own learning resources. We must be mindful that there is an increasing tendency for students to rely on the Internet for information, which may expose them to unfiltered and unreliable content. We conclude that educators must be aware of the spectrum of learning resources used by students, to ensure that our own Institutional eLearning platforms are optimised to meet the diverse needs of learners.

Background Dialysis is often neglected in academic teaching. At the University of Torino, Italy, teaching Nephrology (4th year of Medical School) consists of 21 hours of formal lessons, 10 hours/student of interactive lessons (4/10 dedicated to dialysis) and 10 optional lessons (3 regarding dialysis). Interactive and optional lessons widely employ computer assisted teaching. Aim of the study was to evaluate student satisfaction on this approach. Methods Student satisfaction was assessed on 4 sample lessons (166 students), by two short dedicated questionnaires (0–10 scale, open questions). Results High scores were given to the dialysis lessons (median 8/10). Computer assisted interface (median 8/10, range 6–10) was of help in check of knowledge in real time (86%), enhancing participation (61%); 62% suggest extending this experience to selected courses, 38% to all. Conclusions Medical students consider dialysis an important part of the academic teaching of Nephrology; new interfaces may help to enhance student satisfaction.

The Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) experiences of the Department of Forest Resources at the University of New Brunswick are described. The paper defines the principal benefit of CAL as better students rather than better teaching and states that CAL has contributed to the former by enhancing learning in three important ways: (i) new subjects, not possible before, have been introduced; (ii) certain topics have been dealt with more often; (iii) the delivery of some subjects has been better managed. The paper continues with a discussion of three strategies that were successfully employed in implementing the CAL programme. These strategies are (1) the programme emphasized heuristic CAL activities: probelm-solving, self-discovery and "what-if" learning, as opposed to drill and tutorial exercises: (2) the programme was committed to developing and maintaining appropriate CAL infrastructure: a dedicated and fully equipped CAL laboratory, plus the ongoing support of a CAL specialist to assist and educate faculty in integrating and implementing CAL techniques and. avoid reliance upon imported, often inappropriate, courseware; (3) in a limited funding situation the programme deliberately traded microcomputer quality for quantity, thus maximizing number of students accommodated. The paper concludes with a description of several CAL examples taken from undergraduate courses currently offered at the Faculty of Forestry.
