For the individual and for society, human life and health are great values, which are often particularly difficult or impossible to measure, though they are irreplaceable values. Even in the oldest historical stages of the development and life of society, many important doctors and scientists were interested in the social aspects of health care, e.g. Hippocrates, Aristotle, Avicenna. Paracelsus († 1541, Swiss philosopher and physician) and Georgius Agricola († 1555, German chemist and mineralogist). Based on their own experience gained from daily contact with workers and their working environment, they examined disorders caused by the harmful factors of the working environment and working processes. The ever-changing world of work increasingly brings new risks into working processes, which are directly related to the work performed by employees. As part of the EU-OSHA (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work) strategy to increase health and safety at work, the European Risk Observatory called on EU Member States to improve the detection of these risks in the working environment. Considering the above, the authors of this article have set themselves the goal of mapping the current situation in the area of the creation, protection and quality management of the working environment. They describe general requirements for protecting occupational health and safety, mainly in Slovakia. They are convinced that current developments present the need to know as much as possible about the living and working environments, to have a thorough knowledge of working conditions and all the factors that affect the health of employees, to know and choose assessment procedures to reduce the negative effects of these factors to a minimum. It is important that we keep in mind that healthy working conditions are among the most valuable assets of individuals, communities and nations.

This article presents a new idea to improve crucial ecological issues that arise due to the poor performance of indoor environments during the occupancy phase to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for building residents. Using the Delphi technique via a focus group discussion, the authors identified seven attributes that are associated with occupants’ health and safety, namely, cooling (thermal comfort), artificial lighting (visual comfort), natural lighting (visual comfort), acoustic comfort, waste reduction, ventilation, and cleanliness. We illustrate the use of Delphi in ensuring a safe and healthy working environment via two-round stages involving 22 respondents, which include building energy experts from green and environmental organizations in Malaysia. The first round confirms the suitability of the attributes while the second determines the individual priority weights of the attributes. Our method allows improving building residents’ safety and health by focusing on improving their indoor environment, where the top attributes are ventilation (30.3%), cleanliness (17.1%), and cooling (7.4%). This new method of effectiveness evaluation is based on the calculation of the individual priority weight, which is derived from the analytical hierarchy process. In this method, respondents are made to rate the importance of each attribute in pair-wise comparison during the second round. The results of this study aid in improving the indoor environment during the occupancy phase; these results can also be used for prioritizing elements that should perform well in the performance evaluation.

The article discusses the principles of determining the maximum admissible concentration and intensity values for harmful agents present at workplaces as the basic criteria for ensuring safe and hygienic working conditions in Poland and in the European Union. The role of the Interdepartmental Commission for the Maximum Admissible Concentrations and Intensities of Agents Harmful to Health in the Working Environment is presented in this process. The attention was drawn to the relationship between the occupational health and safety legislation and the EC regulations on chemicals, which together provide both employers and the Member States with the necessary data and instruments to work safely with chemicals and to be able to take appropriate actions and risk management measures.

According to the World Health Organization, the major health threats to the planet’s population are air pollution, non-infection diseases, vaccine refusal, antibiotic resistance, etc. Taking into account the whole complexity of the systemic links in the range of these issues, the discussion intensity on health will continue. That’s why, there’s no wonder the safety of human life as a whole and the philosophical reflection on the phenomenon of health are the subject of critical analysis of many modern researchers. The extent, to which a social subject’s health-preserving activity is effective, depends on a number of factors. The end result of health preserving activity is determined not only by the mental and volitional qualities of the person who puts it into practice. It is also a matter of the dialectical interaction of form and content of a personality’s health preserving culture, without which it is impossible to imagine a holistic vision of this problem under the current conditions.Health preserving activity of a social subject under the contemporary consumerism acquires specific features, the form and content of which are predetermined by traditional social practices that are inherent in a society of over-consumption.It is of utmost importance for every educated person to understand the real state of affairs in the interconnections between the elements of such complex mechanisms as a consumer society and health preservation. It means that the power of negative effects on the individual is being significantly increased, because it is not about demonstrating expenses on unnecessary clothes and accessories, which will harm only the consumer’s wallet, but about expending on health-preservation drugs, products and procedures. That is, the vitality of the human biological organism and the duration of their life are crucial.Personal responsibility to care about your own health will always go hand in hand with critical reflection on the information. Both personal responsibility and critical thinking are based on education. The more educated a person is, the greater his or her vitality and readiness to meet the challenges of today are. Thus, as a result of the lack or the absence of competent information on contents, false origin and consequences of the consumption of preparations, foods, goods and procedures, the content of the health-preserving activity is being distorted, and the form, while preserving external segments, becomes illusory in its essence.

AbstractCarbon dioxide (CO2) may have toxic effects at concentrations much lower than the concentration at which its stifling effect of asphyxiant is reflected. In the workplace, the maximum permissible exposure limit of 5000 ppm is permitted on the average. However, there are certain places where the concentration of CO2 in an enclosed room or area may potentially reach extreme and life-threatening levels. Extreme levels of CO2 may lead to death, especially in enclosed spaces, such as in fermentation rooms or in the process of wine production or in breweries. CO2 may have negative effects on health and safety at the workplace. Monitoring and control of CO2 in the working environment is important for the safety and health of employees and is one of the approaches to a healthier environment in the workplace. The use of CO2 sensors to control the ventilation can be an effective measure.

Ergonomics is not a panacea. Ergonomics focuses first on fitting the job to the worker, then on fitting the worker into the job. The appropriate application of ergonomic principles, while keeping in mind the individual differences among workers, will lead to improvement in the health and safety of any occupational setting. Perhaps the real significance of ergonomic programs is best considered in light of the possible alternatives. These words from Weiner (1950), also cited by Christensen (1987), sum up the problem of taking a narrow, short term view of the workplace, and the consequences of failing to actively strive for improved ergonomic working conditions: It is a degradation to a human being to chain him to an oar and use him as a source of power; but it is an almost equal degradation to assign him purely repetitive tasks in a factory, which demand less than a millionth of his brainpower. But it is simpler to organize a factory or galley which uses individual human being for a trivial fraction of their worth than it is to provide a world in which they can grow to their full stature (Weiner, 1950).

There are different views on questionnaire surveys among researchers. Some experts question their use in the scientific field because of great subjectivity. However, using the current scientific methods of creating questionnaires, respondent’s selection, surveying itself and, in particular, evaluating, we can achieve interesting results that can then be verified by other, more suitable methods. The basic idea behind creating a questionnaire was to find out in what working conditions the respondents work and what desired or undesired impacts they are exposed to during their work. We have processed this questionnaire so that it is suitable for all types of operations and for all types of workplace factors. When designing the individual questions of the questionnaire, we tried not to deviate from the relation between the questions and the studied issue. We tried to formulate the questions in a clear way so that they would not be interpreted as obscure or ambiguous. The questions were not suggestive, and rather served as guidelines without suggesting any specific answers. We also tried to ask questions that would not require certain knowledge or information that respondents did not have.

Implementation of effective programs to improve occupational safety should be linked to an understanding of the specific nature of the given job. The aim of the research was to compare occupational groups with different job-related specificities: industrial production line workers, retail workers and mine rescuers, in terms of their assessment of the work safety climate. The survey covered 2,995 respondents with diversified demographic characteristics. The study used an abridged version of the Safety Climate Questionnaire by Znajmiecka-Sikora (2019) to assess 10 separate safety climate dimensions. The results of the MANOVA multivariate analysis, Wilks’ multivariate F-tests and univariate F tests prove that there is a statistically significant difference between the respondents representing the three occupational groups collectively in terms of global assessment of all work safety climate dimensions, and also indicate significant differences between workers belonging to the three occupational groups in terms of their assessment of the individual dimensions of the work safety climate, except the organization’s occupational health and safety management policy as well as technical facilities and ergonomics, which may be due to the universality of the requirements set for organizations with regard to these two aspects of safe behavior. The differences observed in the assessment of the remaining work safety climate dimensions induces one to promote more differentiated and individualized activities, taking into account the work specificity and the nature of the threats occurring in the respective working environment of the representatives of the different occupations. The difference in assessment of the work safety climate found in the research encourages one to create practical programs for safety, not only in the procedural and technical dimension, but also in the social and psychological one.

Talking about religious addiction in today’s age is both a timely and taboo subject. Religion has been a part of human life since ancient times. It is perhaps one of the most exciting and complex areas in research behavioural addictions together with its negative and positive sides. However, when we talk about religious addiction, in addition to the dysfunctional operation of the individual, the dysfunctional operation of the given religious group also appears. I try to explore the topic from several aspects, emphasizing the clarification of the concept and functions of religion, going around its positive and negative effects, and also presenting the methods of its therapeutic nature for young people.
