Viral events on social media are often made into the news. One of the social media viral events that made the news in mid-2019 was #JusticeforAudrey. Allegations of violence against Audrey made headlines in all mass media, including on Liputan 6 Siang SCTV. During April 2019, projections related to Audrey's coverage were submitted by producers every day. The news values that is the basis for determining the feasibility of an event to become news is no longer the priority of producers. This research paradigm is critical with a qualitative approach and uses the Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis method. Theory of Political Economy Vincent Mosco explains the practice of viral news values is the practice of commodification of content and audiences. Viral social media events are considered attractive to internet users and expected to attract tv viewers. The practice of viral social media news is the commodification of content. Meanwhile, in the commodification of audiences, television news viewers in the form of rating & share are used as sales to advertisers, which in turn become an economic advantage for media corporations.

Abstract This research is linked with Twitter, as one of social media services on the Internet that are extremely popular in the world, including in Indonesia. This research is important because Twitter is effective in quickly and accurately delivering messages. In fact, everyone can act as a 'reporter' and form quick opinions through this social media. This research is aimed to investigate the emergence of the roots of hegemony based on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, identity, and transformation of national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. Moreover, the research is to discuss the social media's discourse practice that influences media workers in producing news, and to see how it implicates the research on the study of discourse analysis. By using the Fairclough theory, especially on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, and identity, the researcher attempts to explore how the roots of hegemony emerge in the national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. The researcher also offers a new function to complete the approach of Fairclough in text analysis on social media: transformation – which is an attempt to see the change in roles of news participants and amateur readers as 'reporters' and participate in forming opinions. The phenomenal discourse on People Power after Pemilu 2019 is an opinion that was initiated by a central figure in Indonesia, namely Amien Rais. This discourse invited many responses, one of which was Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Yusril gave his argument about various complicated situations and the risk of governance under the umbrella of provocation of people power. The problem of this research is how is the structure of the text and the social context that builds Yusril's opinion on the discourse of people power? This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The approach used is the critical discourse analysis model Teun A. Van Dijk. The data analysis method used is the equivalent and contextual method. Data presentation is done informally. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that: (1) the structure of the text describes semantic, syntactic, and stylistic aspects; while (2) the social context that builds the discourse of People Power is the power and access that the author has.

Attaining national unity and cohesion is a function of deliberate strategic plans of different facets of human endeavour in a nation. The language front has important role to play in fostering national unity and cohesion in any country. The Nigeria and Africa situation is not an exception. The chaos and rivalry that have become an intrinsic experience for us in Nigeria and in fact, Africa is partly a function of careless and unchecked language use in the social media. This paper, therefore, explores the use and misuse of language on social media. The study examines the comments of Facebook users to online news headlines posted on Premium Times Facebook handle. A corpus of a week screenshot samples of these comments are collected out of which nine (9) were purposively selected for the analysis. These nine (9) data are grouped into five (5) texts. The selected data were analysed using Dell Hymes’ Ethnography of Speaking complemented by Theo van Leeuwen’s Identities and Subjectivity Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The paper uses the SPEAKING acronym as the theoretical insight and discussion was based on the postulations of the CDA model adopted. The study found that the responses from readers are mostly tilting towards their individual affiliations. Also, instances of arguments and rebuttals by readers reflect a situation where the polarity tilts in bidirectional positive in-group - “us” and negative out-group – “them” among the different affiliations the users represent. The study further found that copious use of vulgar expressions pervades the comments of readers. This study therefore concludes that such use of language cannot help Nigeria and Africa in its quest for unity. The study recommends that media literacy be taught in schools in order to entrench civility in the discussions of people on social media.

This study examines identity issues in and among the Mandailing people, adapting Bhabha's argument that there is no stable identity, but that identity changes with every interaction in society. For this examination of identity, Bhabha's concept of hybridity has been adapted to investigate the mixture of identities among the Mandailing people. The hybridization in Mandailing is caused by several factors including: cultural contacts, Islamization, migration, and colonialism. The author uses a postcolonial review to see the process of hybrid formation in Mandailing through literary text written by a Mandailing writer, named Willem Iskander, entitled Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk. The text consists of several poems and prose representing the identity of the Mandailing people in the colonial era. In order to realize the postcolonial, the author chooses a critical discourse analysis method for analyzing the data in the text. This critical analysis is able to unravel the colonial discourses that are metaphorically in the text. By combining with the postcolonial theory, especially proposed by Bhabha, this research results a finding, hybridization giving rise to the ambivalence of the Mandailing people. This ambivalence manifests in the social, cultural and political life of the people.

This article applies the framework of critical discourse analysis to the in-depth interviews of 73 young Chinese women residing in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. It examines their discursive practices of choosing and editing their profile pictures on social media, which is in turn placed in the unique sociocultural context of contemporary China for interpretation. This article argues that Chinese women’s self-empowerment through using social media is derived not from a straightforward struggle against the patriarchy or for woman power, but from a gentle, rational yet resolute stance that incorporates a new female identity into the ‘harmonious society’ enshrined in Confucian ideals, thus creating a new digital feminism with Chinese characteristics.
