Abstract This research is linked with Twitter, as one of social media services on the Internet that are extremely popular in the world, including in Indonesia. This research is important because Twitter is effective in quickly and accurately delivering messages. In fact, everyone can act as a 'reporter' and form quick opinions through this social media. This research is aimed to investigate the emergence of the roots of hegemony based on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, identity, and transformation of national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. Moreover, the research is to discuss the social media's discourse practice that influences media workers in producing news, and to see how it implicates the research on the study of discourse analysis. By using the Fairclough theory, especially on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, and identity, the researcher attempts to explore how the roots of hegemony emerge in the national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. The researcher also offers a new function to complete the approach of Fairclough in text analysis on social media: transformation – which is an attempt to see the change in roles of news participants and amateur readers as 'reporters' and participate in forming opinions. Attaining national unity and cohesion is a function of deliberate strategic plans of different facets of human endeavour in a nation. The language front has important role to play in fostering national unity and cohesion in any country. The Nigeria and Africa situation is not an exception. The chaos and rivalry that have become an intrinsic experience for us in Nigeria and in fact, Africa is partly a function of careless and unchecked language use in the social media. This paper, therefore, explores the use and misuse of language on social media. The study examines the comments of Facebook users to online news headlines posted on Premium Times Facebook handle. A corpus of a week screenshot samples of these comments are collected out of which nine (9) were purposively selected for the analysis. These nine (9) data are grouped into five (5) texts. The selected data were analysed using Dell Hymes’ Ethnography of Speaking complemented by Theo van Leeuwen’s Identities and Subjectivity Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The paper uses the SPEAKING acronym as the theoretical insight and discussion was based on the postulations of the CDA model adopted. The study found that the responses from readers are mostly tilting towards their individual affiliations. Also, instances of arguments and rebuttals by readers reflect a situation where the polarity tilts in bidirectional positive in-group - “us” and negative out-group – “them” among the different affiliations the users represent. The study further found that copious use of vulgar expressions pervades the comments of readers. This study therefore concludes that such use of language cannot help Nigeria and Africa in its quest for unity. The study recommends that media literacy be taught in schools in order to entrench civility in the discussions of people on social media.

This study analyzes the written discourse which contains social relation in Tempo newspaper on The World Statesman Award through multidisciplinary Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by van Dijk (1998). It concerns with how the discourse of the news has particular purpose in relation to the readers. Employing the theory, this study aims to answer two main questions: (1) What are the social relations of the language use in online Tempo news related to World Statesman Award to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from Appeal of Conscience Foundation2013? (2) How are the social relations of the language use in online Tempo newspaper to World Statesman Award from Appeal of Conscience Foundation 2013? The data analysis covers first, analysis on the context of news followed by drawing semantic macrostructure. Then, identifying the local meaning of the text as well as the social relation is done. The findings show that the social relations reflected in the social cognition of the news cover the knowledge of shared belief, attitude, or shared opinion, and ideology in both shared knowledge and attitude. Keywords: social relation, multidisciplinary Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)

Social justice is a framework that has been at the forefront of technical communication in recent years. While social justice is often applied in participatory studies, it can also feature in studies using quantitative methods. In this study, I use corpus-based critical discourse analysis to investigate the portrayal of migrants in the World Migration Reports, the flagship publication of the International Organization for Migration. I emphasize context to bring in the social justice framework in this analysis. This study finds that the World Migration Reports represent migrants within various topoi, with a particular focus on the topos of advantage and that of danger/threat.

In this article, I discuss the connection between discursive and social practice on the so-called ‘social’ internet. While the economic significance of platform capitalism grows, the discourse which constitutes these platforms as the substrate of the ‘social’ internet remains largely unquestioned. I will argue that economic realities are obscured by the social frames of interpretation which dominate our understanding of the internet. I will show how the internet is dominated by this naturalized discourse which I name ‘sociodigital’. Whether the internet may best be described in social terms or not is a question outside of the scope of this text. Rather, I will analyse how exploitation is veiled by this myth of the ‘social’ internet. The importance of this lies in unveiling hidden exploitation in an era where economic inequalities are increasing both rapidly and globally while simultaneously, the importance of ‘softer’ linguistic power increases. This makes discourse analysis important to reveal hidden power relations. I will argue that the users of ‘social’ media are exploited through their production of content, as this generates profits for the capitalist. This exploitation is however both veiled and increased by the discourse, which thus functions ideologically. Therefore, I will wield critical discourse analysis to unravel how the myth of the ‘social’ internet suppresses the economic consequences of exploitation.

This research aims in analyzing a song entitled “We are the World 25 for Haiti”. This song was first introduced by Michael Jackson in 1985 named “We are the World 1985” when he made collaboration with other musicians for USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa). The single was intended as a charity single to raise funds for famine relief efforts in Ethiopia who have suffered political instability and disaster drought in 1984-1985. Then, this song is chosen to be used for collecting funds in rehabilitating Haiti after the enormous earthquake. This paper focuses on the composer’s attitudes, the social relation among the participants, the context of the situation, and the power relation in the discourse. The lyrics are taken as the object of the research. The data were initially analyzed based on Martin and Rose (2003). The findings showed that the all types of attitude were found, they were expressing feelings, judging people’s character, and appreciating things. But one parts of judging people’s character was not found in the song lyrics. The result of the study is hoped to be beneficial for readers to have a better understanding about the Critical Discourse Analysis
