The article reveals the peculiarities of the use of innovative technologies in swimming lessons for students of higher education institutions. It is found that the development of a large number of swimming movements simultaneously by all methods of swimming first light, then sports and elements of applied swimming allows at the initial stage to choose the easiest way first and gradually move to complex. This reduces the duration of the entire period of development of swimming techniques. It is established that the use of innovative technologies in teaching swimming to students contributes to the formation of their need for a healthy lifestyle, increase their level of preparedness and functionality of the body. Analysis of swimming programs used in higher education institutions shows that classes are usually built according to the traditional method with the parallel development of two similar in structure methods of rabbit on the chest and rabbit on the back. At the same time, the peculiarities of sex and age, interests, motives and needs of students, as well as individual features and tendencies to master a certain type of motor activity are not sufficiently taken into account. The organization of swimming lessons with young students in the mode of training, taking into account the above features, can significantly affect the formation of their need for a healthy lifestyle, health and prevent further deterioration.

The article considers the peculiarities of the use of volleyball in groups of sports improvement of students of higher education institutions. The current state of physical fitness of student youth is characterized. The need to improve the system of sports training of volleyball students in connection with changes in government, structural, logistical, economic conditions, the need to educate young people in a healthy lifestyle, one of the main factors of which should be daily exercise . It is established that the existing system of physical education of students on the basis of traditional provisions of current organizational and methodological programs does not provide fully effective rehabilitation, education and upbringing of students from the standpoint of conscious mandatory motor activity and personal needs in solving important tasks of personal development. The reforms carried out in the modern system of higher education have deeply affected the physical education of student youth. The most important role in the general and professional development of students of higher education institutions belongs to physical education, both as a discipline and as one of the subsystems of the holistic pedagogical process. One of the ways to solve this problem is to reorient the target programs of different types of physical culture to meet the needs of personal orientations, interests and personal goals of each student, more fully take into account the level of physical development and physical fitness, targeted use of training loads. It is for each of the cultivated types of sports activities in higher education institutions it is necessary to develop a goal, objectives, tools, forms and a comprehensive educational and training complex. This becomes possible only on the basis of the development and application of new educational and training technologies aimed at conscious motor activity of female students of higher education institutions in the chosen sport.

The article reveals the features of the implementation of health technologies in the process of physical education of students of higher education institutions. It is determined that the design is aimed at changing the type of thinking of project participants in accordance with the needs of the modern labor market and globally is seen as a global trend in connection with increasing levels of production, training, life in general. The concept of health-preserving technologies of physical education based on a healthy lifestyle has been developed, which in accordance with the laws of morpho- functional development of the body and social expectations provides the formation of a young specialist, whose spiritual, physical, social and moral characteristics are adequate to new living conditions. The psychological and pedagogical conditions for the implementation of health-preserving technology in the process of physical education are determined. Socio-economic and socio- political reorganization of all spheres of Ukrainian society is inevitable and entails changes in the spiritual life of people, in the motives of their behavior, values, social attitudes. In this regard, the higher education system faces the problem of transition from the traditional pedagogical paradigm to innovative learning based on the development of a culture of designing various technologies and, above all, technologies for developing and promoting the health of students potential of the nation. Modern educational space is actively filled with pedagogical technologies, the multiplicity of which generates a variety of definitions of this concept, among which the thematically closest to us is the definition, pedagogical technology

The article deals with the problems of education of a healthy lifestyle in higher education. The analysis of forming the skills of students’ healthy lifestyle in higher education institutions is carried out. The process of physical education at the university is analyzed, which aims at forming the foundations of a healthy lifestyle of students, physical culture as an integral part of the general culture of the future specialist. It is substantiated that motor activity improves the life of the organism as a whole, stimulates the intellectual activity of the person, increases the productivity of mental labor, positively influences its mental and emotional activity. The basic components of a healthy lifestyle are characterized. Direct connection of motor activity with the state of human health has been established, which, in turn, is determined by the reserves of energy, plastic and regulatory support of body functions, is characterized by resistance to pathogenic factors and ability to counteract pathological processes and is the basis for social and biological functions. The students’ communication opportunities in the process of physical exercises, games and sports, the education of the need for systematic physical education, the pursuit of physical perfection, work and healthy lifestyle are analyzed. It is proved that only a physically and mentally healthy person can most effectively realize the potential inherent in it, without any restrictions to feel an active and full member of society.

The study objective was to determine informative indicators of functional and motor fitness of 1st-5th year students. Materials and methods. The study involved male students of 1st year (n = 67), 2nd year (n = 66), 3rd year (n = 62), 4th year (n = 45), 5th year (n = 56). The following research methods were used to solve the tasks set: analysis of scientific literature, pedagogical observation, pedagogical testing; index method and medical-biological methods. Pedagogical methods were used to study the peculiarities of functional state of the body and motor abilities of 1st-5th year students of higher education institutions; factor analysis was used for data processing. Results. By the Ruffier index, the 1st-2nd year students have an average heart performance. The 3rd-5th year students have a satisfactory heart performance. By the results of the Stange and Genci tests, the 1st-5th year students are evaluated as healthy and fit. According to the Romberg test, the 1st and 5th year students show higher results than the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students (p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.006, respectively). The 3rd year students have the lowest results. The test results are estimated as lower than normal. Conclusions. The analysis of motor and functional fitness of the 1st-5th year students showed that the first factor in their structure is the functional state of the respiratory system, the second factor is speed strength and strength fitness. The most informative tests are: 1st year – the Stange test (0.822) and Genci test (0.741); 2nd year – the Genci test (0.758), the Ruffier index has the lowest informativity (0.11); 3rd year – “Standing long jump” (0.741) and the Genci test (0.723); 4th year – the Stange test (0.927) and Genci test (0.810); 5th year – the Stange test (0.799).

Human Resources (HR) departments in previously disadvantaged higher education institutions (HEI) in South Africa have contributed to the crisis that has led them to be governed by appointed Administrators assigned by the Ministry of Higher Education and Training. The malfunctioning of HR departments persists even in the post-Administrator’s era, with a prevalence of personal, interpersonal and operational challenges. This study aimed at interrogating challenges faced by the HR Department of the university concerned post the appointed Administrator era and its negative effects. This study adopted a qualitative research approach whereby in-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of 10 HR Department staff members. Focus group discussions were also carried out with 20 academic and non-academic university leaders. Further data was also collected through ethnographic observation and secondary data was also used. The non-probability purposive sampling was used for qualitative analysis and NVivo was used for organizing and analyzing data gleaned from the in-depth interviews. The study findings consistently revealed unclear roles and responsibilities, outmoded recruitment and selection processes and poor interpersonal relations amongst the HR department staff members as some of the challenges that still persist post the Administrator’s era, all of which have contributed to the paralysis of organizational culture. University leaders can use the study findings as a tool to devise and implement radical change management interventions aiming at re-engineering HR departments that are operating abnormally, as well as for designing a responsive HR Strategic Architect. This study will contribute to the body of knowledge in the HR fraternity as there is a dearth of published studies on the internal challenges faces by HR Departments (both interpersonal and operational), which have the potential to hamper smooth operations of higher education institutions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning and operationalisation of quality in the context of higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review is performed of 308 articles published in various peer-reviewed journals between 1999 and 2017. Findings The findings reveal that the quality constructs of student learning, engagement, service quality and satisfaction have received the greatest attention, followed by total quality management, quality assurance, benchmarking and accountability. The most popular approach is empirical, and surveys and single case studies are the most popular methods. Europe leads research on quality in HEIs, followed by North America and Asia. Research limitations/implications This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by presenting a comprehensive synthesis of articles addressing quality in HEIs. Practical implications Policymakers and academic administrators can use the findings of this study to conceptualise student satisfaction along the educational value chain. The operationalisation of quality constructs will help policymakers create teaching excellence. Originality/value This paper highlights the importance of quality in HEIs.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning and operationalisation of quality of service (QoS) in the context of higher education institutions (HEIs).Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review of 167 articles published in various peer-reviewed journals between 1990 and 2019 is performed.FindingsThe findings reveal that around 40 dimensions have been used to conceptualise QoS in HEIs. Reliability followed by responsiveness, tangibility, empathy, assurance, programme design, academic and non-academic processes, reputation and facilities have received the highest attention. The most popular approach is empirical, and surveys and single-context studies are the most popular methods. The United Kingdom (UK) leads research on quality in HEIs, followed by the United States of America (USA) and India.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper contributes to the body of knowledge by presenting a comprehensive synthesis of articles addressing QoS in HEIs.Practical implicationsPolicymakers and academic administrators can use the findings of this study to conceptualise student satisfaction along the educational value chain. Orientation: Female academics in higher-education institutions face numerous challenges in the continuously changing landscape of South African higher education. Mergers, increasing job demands, ever-increasing class sizes and role conflict inherent in the female role contribute extensively to the manifestation of stress and burnout in this population group.Research purpose: This research was conducted from a salutogenic paradigm, seeking to find ways of avoiding the negative consequences of burnout and contributing towards the positive experience of work engagement for the female academic. The research also explored the effect of the individual academic’s sense of coherence (SOC) on her experience of burnout and work engagement.Research design, approach and method: The research was quantitative in nature. A psychometric instrument was sent to all the permanently employed female academics at Unisa and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), measuring their levels of burnout, work engagement and SOC. The completed questionnaires were statistically analysed.Main findings: The findings included average levels of burnout, with definite signs that the experience of burnout is on the increase. The cynicism sub-dimension of burnout showed increased levels, work engagement scores were just above average and SOC scores were low.Practical/managerial implications: This article offers a psychological interpretation of the variables in the target group. The article contributes towards the body of research studies conducted from a positive psychological paradigm and, specifically, on the female gender.Contribution/value-add: The main recommendations are that university management needs to take cognisance of the alarming symptoms of burnout present in the population under discussion. Strategies are recommended to address these and to nurture work engagement.

The work also substantiates the advantages of the innovative approach in comparison with the traditional forms of teaching students. The analysis of modern innovative tools, which is used by teachers of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, is carried out.
