A 0.15-m-thick gravel asphalt concrete (AC) pavement on a sand subgrade was loaded with 4 million repetitions of a 75-kN super-single wheel load using the linear tracking device (LINTRACK) heavy-traffic simulator. Frequent measurements were carried out, including asphalt strain, temperature, rutting, cracking, and falling weight deflectometer measurements, to investigate the performance of full-depth asphalt pavements. The subsequent data analysis indicated that the life of the tested asphalt pavement, according to the Dutch fatigue-design criterion (halving the asphalt stiffness), was 2 to 4 times longer than predictions based on the pavement-design method of the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (RHED) of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. Thus, this method does not give an unsafe design. The analysis also indicated that halving of the asphalt stiffness, implying structural distress, occurred before any cracking was visible at the pavement surface. Almost all visible cracking occurring later in this test pavement consisted of surface cracking instead of structural cracking. Therefore, the structural distress did not grow upward to form the visible cracks at the surface, but the latter formed independently. The same was observed on Dutch highways, which are much thicker. These conclusions are based on only one test section, although supplemented with extensive materials testing, and verification with other tests is necessary.

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is old asphalt pavement that has been removed from a road by milling or full depth removal. The use of RAP in hot mix asphalt (HMA) eliminates the need to dispose old asphalt pavements and conserves asphalt binders and aggregates, resulting in significant cost savings and benefits to society. This paper presents a study on HMA with different RAP proportions carried out to evaluate the volumetric properties and performance of asphalt mixes containing different proportions of RAP. Marshall Mix Design Method was used to produce control mix (0% RAP) and asphalt mixes containing 15% RAP, 25% RAP and 35% RAP in accordance with Specifications for Road Works of Public Works Department, Malaysia for AC14 dense graded asphalt gradation. Volumetric analysis was performed to ensure that the result is compliance with specification requirements. The resilient modulus test was performed to measure the stiffness of the mixes while the Modified Lottman test was conducted to evaluate the moisture susceptibility of these mixes. The Hamburg wheel tracking test was used to evaluate the rutting performance of these mixes. The results obtained showed that there were no substantial difference in Marshall Properties, moisture susceptibility, resilient modulus and rutting resistance between asphalt mixes with RAP and the control mix. The test results indicated that recycled mixes performed as good as the performance of conventional HMA in terms of moisture susceptibility and resilient modulus. It is recommended that further research be carried out for asphalt mixes containing more than 35% RAP material.

Two full-depth gravel asphalt concrete (AC) pavements of 0.15- and 0.08-m thickness on a sand subgrade were loaded with 4 million and 0.65 million repetitions of a 75-kN super-single wheel load using the linear tracking device (LINTRACK), a heavy-traffic simulator. Frequent measurements of asphalt strains, temperatures, rutting, cracking, and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) were made. The data analysis of the rutting measurements indicates that all rutting could be ascribed to subgrade deformation (secondary rutting). No evidence was found of shear deformation within the asphalt layer (primary rutting). The data analysis also indicates that the observed rutting performance of the LINTRACK test sections (to a maximum rut depth of 18 mm) coincides closely with the average criterion from the Shell Pavement Design Manual, which relates subgrade strain to allowable number of strain repetitions.

For the study of soft subgrade pavement cracking process, it establishes the pavement structure tension crack model by elastic layered theory. Based on the finite element method, it studies the tension crack evolution process. It establishes the tension crack stress criterion to the roadbed. Analysis shows that the distresses of asphalt pavement of the real highway results from the damage by asymmetric sedimentation which is under excessively axle loading on pavement structure, rather than the fatigue damage by axle loading repetitions in the condition of asymmetric intensity in the same layer. The results show that the soft degree of the subgrade is proportional to the tensile stress, the more localized soft, the easier to crack the road. The soft roadbed does not have a homogeneous structure of the road surface, the tension stress rupture occurred in the discontinuous surface. The road structure has a set of tensile stress under the circulation wheel load, it formats a new fracture surface, and the structure form corresponding evolves, and causes stress state change. At last most of the road sub-base crack, and surface cracking occurres, so the pavement failure.

Rut,referred to as a common damage of asphalt pavement ,is still a knotty problem to pavement researchers. Many reasons could cause rut, among which heavy duty, improper pavement structural combination design are two principal factors. As a result, three pavement structures and seven types of asphalt mixtures were used to evaluate the rutting resistance performance of different structural combinations. At first, through Marshall design method, the properties of asphalt mixtures were obtained such as gradation, asphalt content and so on. Based on the comparison of gradations and anti-rutting additives, the single layer rut was tested by wheel tracking test. Then, in order to consider influence of pavement structural design on pavement rut, six types of structure combinations under identical heavy duty condition were designed to perform rutting test. It shows that anti-rutting gradation and anti-rutting additives can improve rutting resistance performance of single layer. Also, a proper structural design could provide a better bearing capacity of wheel load even for heavy duty. It is better to integrate the anti-rutting gradation and anti-rutting additives into structural design. In this paper the results provide some new insight into the relationship between rutting resistance and mixture gradation, anti-rutting additives, heavy duty and structural combination. The consideration of these factors will give a better pavement design.

The suspension system of vehicle is directly influenced to ride and handling. Therefore, suspension part should have enough endurance during its lifetime to protect passenger. Spring is one of major suspension part of vehicle. Thus, in this paper, a fatigue design method for leaf spring based on proving ground response was proposed. At first, stress and displacement of leaf spring are measured through the proving ground test. And next, the maximum load acting on leaf spring assembly under driving condition was defined from the road load response. On the base of these results, fatigue tests for leaf spring assembly and 3-point bending fatigue tests for material of leaf spring were carried out. From the above, the maximum load-fatigue life relation of leaf spring material and assembly was defined, and 3-point bending test result has good agreement with leaf spring assembly fatigue test result. Thus, it is expect that economical fatigue design criterion for leaf spring assembly can be determined from fatigue data of simple smooth specimen by 3 point bending fatigue tests.

We have measured radiocarbon contents in leaves collected from 15 sites in Japan, including mountain areas and big city areas for last three years. Comparing the radiocarbon contents in various areas, high 14C concentrations (80–100‰ as δ14C) are seen for the leaves from the mountain and country sites. On the contrary, low concentrations (5–40‰) were observed for the leaves from city region, especially near the road with heavy traffic. These results indicate that the atmosphere of the mountain and country sites in Japan is still clean but the CO2 gas coming from fossil non-radioactive carbon significantly pollutes the atmosphere of the city sites. The value of δ14C for the mountain areas implies that 14C produced by nuclear bomb test in 1960s still remains. The decrease of δ14C at heavy traffic sites in Tokyo is consistent with the increase of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere assuming that almost all CO2 gas in this region originates from the fossil fuel.

Chicken feathers are the result of waste from slaughterhouses and billions ofkilograms of waste produced by various kinds of poultry processing. This hal is a veryserious problem for the environment because it causes the impact of pollution. Hasmany utilization of chicken feather waste such as making komocen, accessories, upholstery materials, making brackets to the manufacture of animal feed but from theresults of this activity cannot reduce the production of chicken feathers that hiscontinuously increase every year. This is due to the fact that the selling price of chickenmeat has been reached by consumers with middle to upper economic levels. This caneasily be a chicken menu in almost all restaurants and restaurants to the food stalls onthe side of the road. An alternative way of utilizing chicken feathers is to makecomposite materials in the form of panels. Recent studies have shown that the pvacmaterial can be utilized as a mixing and adhesive material with mashed or groundfeathered composites to form a panel that can later be used as an acoustic material. The test results show that the absorption of chicken feathers and pvac glue into panelscan absorb sound well with an absorption coefficient of 0.59, light. This result is veryeconomical so it is worth to be recommended as an acoustic material. Apart from theresults of research methods carried out is one of the environmentally friendly activitiesin particular the handling of waste problems
