Cultural referents not only designate specific realities of a given culture which do not always exist in another but they are also semantic elements which trigger social representations. By conveying values and points of view about different social groups, cultural referents become linguistic instruments to build stereotypes. These thought patterns are shared by the members of a social or cultural community and act as a filter of reality. The aim of this paper is to study the role of cultural referents in the construction of social stereotypes, focusing on the socio-cognitive universe they evoke. To this end, we have analyzed the translations techniques applied in the Spanish, Catalan and English versions of a novel which has been very successful on the French literary scene: Muriel Barbery’s L’Élégance du hérisson (2006). As show the results of this textual comparison, the explanations, descriptions and additional information observed in target texts do not trigger the same associations as cultural referents do in the source text. Translational approaches are too limited when it comes to achieve linguistic adequacy to different world visions. Therefore, translation must be conceived as an encounter between two cultural systems, in which the translator must build bridges, not so much between two linguistic systems as between the social perceptions and values of two different cultural communities.

The article presents a review of studies on the problem of professional self-determination in adolescence in the aspect of the development of future professionalism, based on the specifics of the laws of age development, which expands the traditional sociological, sociopsychological and differential psychological representations accepted in the literature. Cross-cultural and ethno-cultural differences in the development of professional self-determination are considered. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the prerequisites for the development of the components of such a megastructure of professional maturity as career adaptability, defined as the ability to respond flexibly to dynamically changing requirements and conditions of professional activity, using psychological resources of self-development. It is shown that in the transition from adolescence to youth, adaptability to a career means a balance between interest in a future profession and a realization of the realism of the realization of professional expectations through awareness of their resources and capabilities. In the framework of the Social Cognitive Theory of Professional Development (SCCT), the analysis of complex systems and the social interaction, the concept of strong and weak ties, nonspecific and specific influence, the article discusses the role of sociocognitive and creative factors as mediators which until now have been little studied in relation to the process of professional self-determination in adolescence and young age. The studies revealed the influence of social intelligence on the interest of adolescents and youths in the subject content and social status of the future profession and in interpersonal professional culture. Also, there is a correlation between social intelligence and the second component of the “career adaptability” mega-structure, such as curiosity and orientation in the requirements of the profession, professional expectations (career curiosity). Modern research shows a significant correlation between creativity and the first component (career concern) — planning your own professional future, especially in the early stages of professional self-determination.

This article aims to identify the features of using metaphorical cards for the development of students’ social skills studying in university. The methods of research included testing and observation methods that allow to identify the levels of formation of students’ social intelligence structural components effectively; to determine the features of changes in the perception and control of their own and others' emotional and behavioral reactions, as well as the level of development of understanding of emotional expression. The study shows that the technology of using metaphorical cards is one of the leading ways of emotional-psychological, pedagogical and socio-moral influence on the development of structural components of students’ social intelligence. The effectiveness of working with metaphorical cards in developing communicative skills has been shown to be due to the mechanisms involved in different forms of working with metaphor.  It is considered that metaphorical cards allow projecting both negative emotional reactions arising in communication onto images, reducing the intensity of their experience, and projecting social images, acting as moral guidelines, onto real situations, using them as models of behavior.  It has been found that working with this educational technology helps to develop students' skills in understanding and managing their feelings, emotions and experiences. Practical relevance: The data obtained in this paper can be used in the study of problems related to educational psychology, personality psychology, social psychology and pedagogy.    Keywords: educational technology, social skills, student youth.

: The present essay intends to make known the social representations of women in old age in the fashion world, with the purpose of understanding this social phenomenon little investigated and of great social relevance. For this study we used a qualitative approach, with sampling of multiple cases, in the Porto Metropolitan Area and of interviewees in Lisbon - Portugal, with the participation of 14 women: elderly women over 65 (consumers) and fashion professionals (fashion design, shopkeeper, dressmaker, social events company) of notorious social recognition. The interviews were conducted based on a semi-structured script, in order to capture the social representations of elderly women and the contribution of fashion professionals in the face of the phenomenon studied. The work includes the following approaches: socio-historical aspects about fashion; the space of women in old age in the fashion world; theoretical assumptions about aging and fashion; methodology used; and, finally, the narratives of women in old age in the Portuguese context. Although elderly women do not understand the phenomenon of fashion in aging, they point out their social representations about fashion in this age group.

The psychological studies of the phenomenon of homosexuality is easier to find in European and American research. In this connection, the social-psychological specifics of representations towards homosexuality seems logical, as well as a valuable diversity of representations within society. Of particular interest is the study of this attitudes in the information society, where the media and social networks form bright, often polar points of view. In some previous papers it was shown that the Z Generation is described in terms of more tolerant position towards commonly segregated social groups. The purpose of this study was to reveal the representations about homosexuality among various generations of Russians. The methodological core of the research was the study of social representations (P. Vergesse method). The research methods implied the questionnaire aimed at figuring out representations about homosexuality and a modified variant of the RAHI test. Sample was N = 444 (residents of Russia, 16-65 y.o.). The hypotheses of the research were confirmed: an inverse relationship between belonging to a generational cohort and attitude towards homosexuality as normal was revealed. A significant difference between the Z Generation in tolerance of representations about homosexuality was shown. Some ‘double standards’ towards male and female homosexuality were distinguished. The basic notion of homosexuality as a interaction, based, on a sexual (not love-spiritual kind of relationship), was defined. Conclusions were drawn about the multidimensional influence of channels of mass communication on different generations.

The aim of this study was to analyze the social representations of vulnerability and empowerment of nurses, in the context of their relationships with the work environment, in which they care for people with HIV/AIDS. A qualitative and descriptive study was carried out with 30 nurses in a public hospital that is a reference for HIV/AIDS care. The theoretical framework of the procedural approach from the Social Representations Theory was adopted. The interviews were transcribed and submitted to thematic content analysis using the software Nvivo 9.0. Vulnerability was expressed as embarrassment, dissatisfaction, distress, frustration, insecurity, overload and stress. In turn, empowerment was expressed in the form of positive interpersonal relationships, moral and operational support from the team, adaptations and improvisations, acquisition of scientific knowledge, and professional self-protection.

Abstract Attorneys use the term pain and suffering to indicate the subjective, intangible effects of an individual's injury, and plaintiffs may seek compensation for “pain and suffering” as part of a personal injury case although it is not usually an element of a workers’ compensation case. The AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides), Fifth Edition, provides guidance for rating pain qualitatively or quantitatively in certain cases, but, because of the subjectivity and privateness of the patient's experience, the AMA Guides offers no quantitative approach to assessing “pain and suffering.” The AMA Guides also cautions that confounders of pain behaviors and perception of pain include beliefs, expectations, rewards, attention, and training. “Pain and suffering” is challenging for all parties to value, particularly in terms of financial damages, and using an individual's medical expenses as an indicator of “pain and suffering” simply encourages excessive diagnostic and treatment interventions. The affective component, ie, the uniqueness of this subjective experience, makes it difficult for others, including evaluators, to grasp its meaning. Experienced evaluators recognize that a myriad of factors play a role in the experience of suffering associated with pain, including its intensity and location, the individual's ability to conceptualize pain, the meaning ascribed to pain, the accompanying injury or illness, and the social understanding of suffering.
