The article concentrates on the role of the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ in institutional discourse practice, which is a testimony of positive strategies and forms of behavior to avoid conflict situations in communication; it also gives analysis and systematization of modern scientific approaches and methods of research of concepts at the intersection of Linguistics and other humanities (Linguoculturology, Linguophilosophy, Linguopragmatics, Linguocognitology, Psycholinguistic); the effectiveness of triangulation approach in concepts research is defined, the role of the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ for representatives of Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Ukraine is determined by means of psycholinguistic analysis, answers of 100 English-speaking, 100 German-speaking, 200 Russian-speaking and 200 Ukrainian-speaking respondents are analyzed and the conceptual-thematic groups of reactions to stimulus tolerance of intelligence service in those languages are singled out. The results of the analysis showed the inherent adequacy of all respondents designing the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ for activity of intelligence services within its linguistic and cultural history. According to the associative experiment, joint and distinctive components of the values have been established, value component of the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ for the linguistic cultures have been defined. Common for linguistic cultures, in which the discourse of tolerance is developed – English linguistic culture, German linguistic culture, Ukrainian linguistic culture – is a presence in conceptual consciousness of the carriers of linguistic cultures that are investigated of the generated samples of intelligence services and their specialists, whose activity is associated with the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ with positive connotations. The representatives of the Russian linguistic culture are distinguished for their failure to perceive intelligence services through the prism of the concept ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ. The data of the experiment confirmed the existence of the paradigm of INTOLERANCE – TOLERANCE – ZERO TOLERANCE in the conceptual consciousness of the carriers of the English linguistic culture, German linguistic culture, Ukrainian linguistic culture. For representatives of Russian linguistic culture tolerance is perceived as a quality hostile to the Russian national picture of the world and acquires valence qualities of intolerance. Based on the analysis of the associative experiment, it is concluded that the specificity of positioning of the concepts TOLERANCE OF INTELLIGENCE SERVICE, DIE TOLERANZ DES SICHERHEITSDIENSTES, ТОЛЕРАНТНОСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБЫ, ТОЛЕРАНТНІСТЬ СПЕЦСЛУЖБИ in linguistic cultures that are investigated is conditioned by the uniqueness of conceptual pictures of the world, mentality and history of nations.

This chapter examines the world of the traveling musicians who produced European musical culture and haunted its literary imagination. Focusing on the history of musical itinerancy and travel, mainly in German-speaking Europe, it explores the ways in which Germans shaped and expressed their collective identity. The chapter investigates how traveling performers, often disparaged as rootless musical peddlers, carted new musical styles, forms, and techniques between local musical settings. It looks at the role of choral societies in nation building in the nineteenth century and large choral festivals that gave rise to new fields of rivalry and new forms of identity. It also discusses the lineaments of a new German cultural nationalism that were forged by the travels of musicians on the European landscape. Finally, it considers the literary products of musician writers that shed light on the question of how musicians fit in to an emergent national culture in Germany.

Stalin's Secret Weapon is a gripping account of the early history of the globally significant Soviet biological weapons program, including its key scientists, its secret experimental bases and the role of intelligence specialists, establishing beyond doubt that the infrastructure created by Stalin continues to form the core of Russia's current biological defense network. Anthony Rimmington has enjoyed privileged access to an array of newly available sources and materials, including declassified British Secret Intelligence Service reports. The evidence contained therein has led him to conclude that the program, with its network of dedicated facilities and proving grounds, was far more extensive than previously considered, easily outstripping those of the major Western powers. As Rimmington reveals, many of the USSR's leading infectious disease scientists, including those focused on pneumonic plague, were recruited by the Soviet military and intelligence services. At the dark heart of this bacteriological archipelago lay Stalin, and his involvement is everywhere to be seen, from the promotion of favored researchers to the political repression and execution of the lead biological warfare specialist, Ivan Mikhailovich Velikanov.

On 13 November 2017, Yannis Hamilakis, Felipe Rojas, and several other archaeologists at Brown University engaged in a conversation with Alain Schnapp about his life and career. Hamilakis and Rojas were interested in learning about how Schnapp’s early academic and political interests intersected with the history of Classics and classical archaeology in France, Europe and elsewhere in the world, and also about the origins and current aims of Schnapp’s work on the history of archaeology and antiquarianism and the cross-cultural history of ruins. Schnapp and his interlocutors began by discussing Schnapp’s formative years and the intersections between archaeology and politics in mid-20th-century France. Their conversation turns to the role of individual scholars, specifically classicists and archaeologists, in the momentous social events in Paris in 1968. The final part of the dialogue concerns Schnapp’s contributions to the history of archaeology and the possibilities of engaging in the comparison of antiquarian traditions.

Medardo Rosso (1858–1928) is one of the most original and influential figures in the history of modern art, and this book is the first historically substantiated critical account of his life and work. An innovative sculptor, photographer, and draftsman, Rosso was vital in paving the way for the transition from the academic forms of sculpture that persisted in the nineteenth century to the development of new and experimental forms in the twentieth century. His antimonumental, antiheroic work reflected alienation in the modern experience yet showed deep feeling for interactions between self and other. Rosso's art was transnational: he refused allegiance to a single culture or artistic heritage and declared himself both a citizen of the world and a maker of art without national limits. This book develops a narrative that is an alternative to the dominant Franco-centered perspective on the origin of modern sculpture in which Rodin plays the role of lone heroic innovator. Offering an original way to comprehend Rosso, the book negotiates the competing cultural imperatives of nationalism and internationalism that shaped the European art world at the fin de siècle.

Quite often in the course of historical events, social and economic changes obscure the changes in cultural psychology of ethnic groups and their representatives. The historical science explains what happened, how and why it was happening but very rarely gives us a chance to understand what people were feeling in this respect, what processes were going on in their individual and common consciousness and in the subconscious. The drama that the Christians of the Middle East are going through, the final act of which we are probably witnessing these days, urges us to look for its roots in the distant past. The Ottoman period in the history of East Christian communities is of particular significance. The Middle East Christians got under the Turkish rule as a discriminated minority pushed out on the curb of sociopolitical life, but by the beginning of the 20th century the Christians of the Middle East as a whole, and Christian communities of Syria and Lebanon in particular, were flourishing and were perfectly well adapted to possibilities that inclusion of the Ottoman state into the world capitalist system had to offer. The upgrade of the Christians status was accompanied by gradual changes in their social psychology including self identification of the members of the Christian communities, remodelling of their behaviour patterns in everyday life and in conflict situations as well as psychology of introconfessional relations. This research is an attempt to describe and analyse this cultural and psychological transformation.Нередко в ходе исторических событий социальноэкономические изменения затмевают изменения в культурной психологии этнических групп и их представителей. Историческая наука объясняет, что произошло, как и почему это происходило, но очень редко дает нам возможность понять, что чувствовали люди в этом отношении, какие процессы происходили в их индивидуальном и общем сознании и в подсознании. Драма, которую переживают христиане Ближнего Востока, заключительный акт которой мы, вероятно, наблюдаем в эти дни, побуждает нас искать ее корни в далеком прошлом. Османский период в истории восточных христианских общин имеет особое значение. Ближневосточные христиане попали под турецкое правление как дискриминируемое меньшинство, вытесненное на обочину общественнополитической жизни, но к началу 20 века христиане Ближнего Востока в целом, и христианские общины Сирии и Ливана в частности, процветали и были прекрасно приспособлены к возможностям, которые могло предложить включение Османского государства в мировую капиталистическую систему. Обновление статуса христиан сопровождалось постепенными изменениями в их социальной психологии, включая самоидентификацию членов христианских общин, перестройку их моделей поведения в повседневной жизни и в конфликтных ситуациях, а также психологию внутриконфессиональных отношений. Это исследование является попыткой описать и проанализировать эту культурную и психологическую трансформацию.

The concluding chapter highlights how the cultural history of graphic signs of authority in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages encapsulated the profound transformation of political culture in the Mediterranean and Europe from approximately the fourth to ninth centuries. It also reflects on the transcendent sources of authority in these historical periods, and the role of graphic signs in highlighting this connection. Finally, it warns that, despite the apparent dominant role of the sign of the cross and cruciform graphic devices in providing access to transcendent protection and support in ninth-century Western Europe, some people could still employ alternative graphic signs deriving from older occult traditions in their recourse to transcendent powers.

This chapter examines the continuities between the categories of the “national” and the “universal” in the nineteenth century. It construes these categories as interrelated efforts to create a “world” on various scales. The chapter explores the perceived role of music as a world-making medium within these discourses. It argues that the increased exposure to cultural difference and the interpretation of that cultural difference as distant in time and space shaped a conception of “humanity” in terms of a universal history of world cultures. The chapter reexamines those early nineteenth-century thinkers whose work became inextricably linked with the rise of exclusivist notions of nationalism in the late nineteenth century, such as Johann Gottfried Herder and John Stuart Mill. It draws from their respective treatment of music to recover their early commitment to universalizable principles and their view that the “world” is something that must be actively created rather than empirically observed.

Abstract Plato’s invention of the metaphor of carving the world by the joints (Phaedrus 265d–66c) gives him a privileged place in the history of natural kind theory in philosophy and science; he is often understood to present a paradigmatic but antiquated view of natural kinds as possessing eternal, immutable, necessary essences. Yet, I highlight that, as a point of distinction from contemporary views about natural kinds, Plato subscribes to an intelligent-design, teleological framework, in which the natural world is the product of craft and, as a result, is structured such that it is good for it to be that way. In Plato’s Philebus, the character Socrates introduces a method of inquiry whose articulation of natural kinds enables it to confer expert knowledge, such as literacy. My paper contributes to an understanding of Plato’s view of natural kinds by interpreting this method in light of Plato’s teleological conception of nature. I argue that a human inquirer who uses the method identifies kinds with relational essences within a system causally related to the production of some unique craft-object, such as writing. As a result, I recast Plato’s place in the history of philosophy, including Plato’s view of the relation between the kinds according to the natural and social sciences. Whereas some are inclined to separate natural from social kinds, Plato holds the unique view that all naturalness is a social feature of kinds reflecting the role of intelligent agency.
