The quest for better strategies in teaching is a never-ending process. This scenario is heightened more by the myriad online instructional materials fit for classroom use. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of video lecture materials for statistics proficiency of first year students of Davao Doctors College. The researchers employed quasi-experimental design that involved purposively chosen 31 students for the control group and 26 students for the experimental group. The control group received traditional instruction while the experimental group utilized video lecture materials as the instructional tool. The questionnaire consisted 50 multiple choice items and established a reliability index of .82. This investigation used t-test analysis to establish the same level of statistics proficiency among the students before the conduct of the study. The study concluded that both learning strategies were effective in teaching students the basic concepts of statistics as indicated by the significant improvement of their pre-test to posttest scores. Although the posttest results of the students who were taught using video lecture materials were higher than those supervised using lecture method, the significance of this difference was never established. Thus, the use of video learning material as an instructional tool in statistics is equally effective with the traditional lecture method. Keywords - Mathematics education, video lecture material, effectiveness, statisticsproficiency, quasi-experimental design, significant difference, t-test, Philippines

The current quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of metacognitive reading strategies on the reading comprehension and attitudes of Omani EFL foundation-level students. The sample of the study included two intact classes (N=45) and was selected based on the students’ results in the midterm reading comprehension exam and their responses to the metacognitive strategies survey (MARSI). One class functioned as the experimental group, which received instruction relating to the metacognitive reading strategies. The other class was the control group which received conventional reading instruction. Two instruments were used to collect data: a pre-post reading comprehension test to measure the students’ performance in reading and an attitude questionnaire to investigate their attitudes towards metacognitive reading strategies use. The results of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the learners’ reading comprehension in the experimental group and the control group in favor of the experimental group as a result of metacognitive reading strategies instruction. Results also showed that students in the experimental group held positive attitudes towards using metacognitive reading strategies use. In the light of these findings, implications and recommendations for practice were put forward.

This research was intended to investigate the effect of a culture-based approach in improving students’ reading comprehension on spoof text. For that purpose, a true experimental study was applied to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Soreang. The sample of this study was 88 students from that school. These students were divided equally into the control and experimental group. The experimental group was given the Culture-Based Approach (CBA) as the treatment in comprehending the text. The students’ scores of pre-test and post-test from both groups were statistically analyzed and compared by the T-test. The findings could be summarized that generally, students from the experimental group gained better achievement than from the control group on their post-test scores. The data analysis also showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of the pre-test (53.45) and the post-test (58.39.). Furthermore, the result of the t-test (5.707) was relatively higher than the t- table (2.018) for a 0.5 percent level of significance. It indicated that the students’ achievement was significantly improved after the treatment of using a Culture-Based Approach. Thus, it is recommended that a Culture-Based Approach should be considered as an alternative choice for English teachers in teaching spoof text.
