Purpose: To investigate the co-relation of sitting-rising test scores with measures of lower extremity strength, power, and body compositions (body mass index and waist-hip ratio). Furthermore, to find out the level of physical activity in the targeted population. Methods: Participants aged between 18-35 years (n=131) of both genders were recruited in this study. Along with performing sitting-rising test, anthropometric and demographic data were collected to calculate body mass index and waist-hip ratio. Lower extremity strength was assessed using a 30-second chair stand test, and power was assessed using a triple hop test for distance. Also, the Rapid Assessment Disuse Index questionnaire was given to dividing the population into two groups depending on whether they are involved more in physical activity or not. Results: Sitting-rising test scores showed a positive correlation with lower extremity strength and power, negative correlation with body mass index, and no co-relation with waist-hip ratio. Further, 76 participants out of 131 were less physical activity and had more sedentary behavior. Conclusion: Sitting-rising from the floor in young adults is influenced by the strength and power of lower extremities and body mass index except for the waist-hip ratio. BackgroundBody system impairments following stroke have a complex relationship with functional activities. Although gait and balance deficits are well-documented in people after stroke, the overlapping influence of body impairments makes it difficult to prioritize interventions.ObjectiveThis study examined the relationship between prospectively selected measures of body function and structure (body mass index, muscle strength, sensation, and cognition) and activity (gait speed, gait endurance, and functional balance) in people with chronic stroke.DesignThis was a cross-sectional, observational study.MethodsTwenty-six individuals with mean (SD) age of 57.6 (11) years and time after stroke of 45.4 (43) months participated. Four variables (body mass index, muscle strength difference between the lower extremities, sensation difference between the lower extremities, and Mini-Mental Status Exam score) were entered into linear regression models for gait speed, Six-Minute Walk Test distance, and Berg Balance Scale score.ResultsLower-extremity strength difference was a significant individual predictor for gait speed, gait endurance, and functional balance. Cognition significantly predicted only gait speed.LimitationsThe authors did not include all possible factors in the model that may have influenced gait and balance in these individuals.ConclusionsStrength deficits in the hemiparetic lower extremity should be an important target for clinical interventions to improve function in people with chronic stroke.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to analyse the use of dietary supplements to support weight reduction (DSSWR) in adults according to sociodemographic background, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), body fat percentage (%BF) and level of physical activity (PA). Method Participants (n = 1130) were recruited from a region of Poland with a high rate of adult overweight and obesity. Based on anthropometric data, BMI and WHR were calculated. %BF was assessed using a bioimpedance method. To examine the association between DSSWR use and sociodemographic factors, BMI, WHR, %BF and PA multiple logistic regression were conducted. Results The rate of DSSWR use in the group studied was high (69.5%). A higher proportion of women, individuals aged 18–35 years, those who had completed higher education, those who did not report financial status as “poor”, with a BMI < 18.5, normal %BF and individuals with a high level of PA used DSSWR. In complete case analysis (n = 1108), primarily financial status reported as “good” (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.69, 2.81) or “hard to say” (OR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.86, 3.12) (vs. “poor”) and female sex (OR = 2.59, 95% CI: 2.17, 3.08) were associated with DSSWR intake. Conclusion It seems that primarily financial status and sex, but also age, education, and level of PA, have significance in DSSWR use in adults and may be considered when developing appropriate strategies for body weight management and health promotion.

ZusammenfassungAnliegen: Zielkriterium der Studie ist die prospektive Gewichtsentwicklung hinsichtlich verschiedener Risikoparameter des metabolischen Syndroms bei Patienten mit bipolaren Spektrumserkrankungen unter Ersttherapie mit Valproat in Kombination mit definierten anderen Psychopharmaka. Patienten und Methode: Über die Dauer von neun Monaten wurde der Body-Mass-Index (BMI), Waist-Hip-Ratio (WHR), prozentuale Fettanteil und Leptinspiegel bei 14 Patienten untersucht. Ergebnisse: Es fand sich beim im Fettgewebe produzierten Leptin eine statistisch signifikante Korrelation mit dem BMI, WHR und dem prozentualen Fettanteils. Schlussfolgerungen: Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass beiden 14 bipolaren Patienten unter Ersttherapie mit Valproat über die Dauer von neun Monaten kei-ne signifikante Gewichtszunahme feststellbar war. Es fand sich kein Zusammenhang zwischen der Valproatmedikation und den untersuchten Gewichtsparametern. Bei den Patienten lag bereits unter Baseline eine stammbetonte Adipositas mit erhöhtem BMI und WHR vor. Die vorliegende Untersuchung liefert Hinweise, dass bei Patienten mit langjähriger bipolarer Erkrankung eine erhöhte Prävalenz der mit dem metabolischen Syndrom assoziierten abdominellen Adipositas vorliegt. Weitere kon-trollierte Studien sind erforderlich, um die Ergebnisse zu bestätigen.

In this study, we assessed the influences of change in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)/sedentary time (ST) of caregivers participating in a commercial weight-loss program on their children’s change in MVPA/ST. Data from 29 caregivers and their children were collected over 8 weeks. We used multivariable linear regression to assess associations of changes in caregiver’s percent of time spent in MVPA/ST and changes in their child’s percent of time spent in MVPA/ST. For caregivers that decreased body mass index (BMI) over 8 weeks, changes in caregivers’ MVPA was strongly associated with the change in children’s MVPA (β = 2.61 [95% CI: 0.45, 4.77]) compared to caregivers who maintained/increased BMI (β = 0.24 [–2.16, 2.64]). Changes in caregivers’ ST was strongly associated with changes in children’s ST (β = 2.42 [1.02, 3.81]) compared to caregivers who maintained/increased BMI (β = 0.35 [–0.45, 1.14]). Findings reinforce encouraging caregivers to enroll in weight-loss programs for the benefit of their children as well as for themselves.

Background:Several studies have shown that there is a link between body mass index (BMI) and painful foot imputed to a biomechanical change in foot structure [1].Objectives:Our objective was to study the association between BMI and static foot disorders in gonarthrosic subjects.Methods:It was a prospective descriptive study conducted in the rheumatology department of the Mohamed Kassab Institute of Orthopedics with 60 patients with Gonarthrosis. The socio-demographic data of the patients were studied. BMI was calculated for all patients. Static foot disorders have been studied.Results:Sixty patients were included, 83.3% of whom were female. The average age was 55.2 years [38-78 years]. The disease has been evolving for an average of 6 years [1-13 years]. The lesion was bilateral in 80% of cases, the average body mass index was 30.4 kg / m2 [24-36]. Knee arthritis was classified as stage I, II and III according to the Kellgren and Lawrence classification in 18.5%, 55.6% and 25.9% of patients respectively. The foot examination involved 108 gonarthrosic limbs. Examination of the integuments showed hyperkeratosis in 94.4% of the cases (79.6% calluses and 83.3% callosities). Forefoot deformities were Hallux valgus (HV) in 52.8% of cases and overlapping toes in 18.5% of cases. Pronation deformity using the Foot Posture Index (FPI) was found in 51.9% of cases. Abnormal lowering of navicular bone was noted in 51.9%. The podoscopic impression revealed flat feet in 73.2% of the cases.A statistically significant association was found between BMI and the presence of calluses (31.21 ± 2.897 vs26.83 ± 1.425, p <0.001), with HV (31.37 ± 3.086 vs29.49 ± 2.969, p = 0.002), at the overlap of the toes (33.2 ± 1.361vs29.86 ± 1.130, p <0.001), with the lowering of the navicular bone (31.17 ± 2.885vs29.68 ± 3.304, p = 0.015), FPI (p = 0.003) and flat podoscopic impression (p <0.001).Conclusion:BMI is strongly associated with static feet disorders in gonarthrosic patients by aggravating the postural changes in the foot caused by knee osteoarthritis [2].
