Results of a green pruning experiment with maple, beech, oak, and ash Object of the investigation is a pruning experiment in maple, beech, oak and ash stands in southwest Germany, which started in 2004. Aim of the experiment was to quantify the effects of green pruning on wood decay, discoloration, epicormic shoot formation, radial increment, and occlusion time. At top heights of 8–14 m, trials for each species were placed in stands where the natural pruning had not yet reached the achieved knot-free bole length. In each trial, ten trees were pruned in spring and summer respectively, by cutting 40% of the crown in average and branches up to 80 mm diameter. Additionally, ten unpruned trees were selected on each trial and, as the pruned trees, released from competitors. In 2011 and 2012 respectively, the trees were felled and measured, and wood samples with branches were taken and analysed. Results show that green pruning did not cause any wood decay. Compared to the control trees, increased discoloration was observed in the stems of the pruned trees. However, this was limited to the knotty center of the trunk and did not diffuse to the knotless part. Pruning intensified the formation of epicormic branches, but, except for oak, these branches diminished to the level of the control trees already during the time of observation. Radial increment shows a short-term decrease due to the green pruning, but with an extent below the effect of the dry year in 2003. With branch diameters of 3–4 cm, the pruned trees needed three to five years until the branching wounds were occluded, whereas about nine years were necessary for trees with natural pruning.

The aim of this study was to develop models on branch characteristics for Fraxinus excelsior L. (common ash) and Acer pseudoplatanus L. (sycamore maple) based on 44 and 25 sample trees, respectively. A total of 635 ash and 334 maple branches were sampled. The data set on artificial pruning was pooled among the two species with a total of 71 branches from 16 trees. The material was used to predict (i) the time for a complete occlusion, (ii) the total radius of the occluded branch inside the trunk, (iii) the branch insertion angle, and (iv) the dead branch portion of the occluded branch. In addition, the effects of species and natural versus artificial pruning were assessed. Generalized hierarchical mixed models with univariate or multivariate approaches were used in this analysis. The diameter of the occluded branch and the stem radial increment played a dominant role as predictors. Artificial pruning led to a significant reduction in occlusion time and a shorter occluded branch radius. Only few species-specific differences were found. Simulations showed a reasonable overall behaviour of the models. The residual variation was tolerable for integrating the models into a growth simulation system.

A stocking program for the endangered European weatherfish (Misgurnus fossilis L.) was conducted in the German federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, southwest Germany. An initial monitoring enabled to identify local broodstock and to assess habitats regarding their ecological suitability for reintroduction. In a second step, broodstock were caught for artificial propagation and cultured fry were released in previously selected river sectors. Furthermore, reintroduction sectors were biannually monitored to assess stocking success. Within the study period (2014–2016), a total number of approximately 83,500 juveniles were stocked in three river sectors for reintroduction and approximately 85,000 juveniles were stocked in four other river sectors to strengthen existing populations. During the post-release monitoring, 45 individuals were recaptured in two sectors. The documented short-term reintroduction success (i.e. survival of released individuals) indicates appropriateness of the selected stocking strategy. Furthermore, the provided course of action might be transferred to further states or countries and thereby contribute to weatherfish conservation at larger scales.

Forest owners are confronted with contradictory views on the importance of deadwood. Environmentalists argue that it should be left in the forest to conserve biodiversity, provide a habitat for specific fauna and flora, and maintain soil quality through wood decay. Conversely, industrial stakeholders, and some public decision makers, advocate harvesting deadwood. Based on a sociological survey and qualitative interviews, we first analyzed the detailed environmental opinions and values of four groups of French foresters as well as their attitudes towards biodiversity, in particular regarding deadwood conservation. We identified various types of attitudes towards deadwood, which could be seen as waste, an unprofitable by-product, a meaningless entity, or a key part of the ecosystem. We then studied the arguments leading them to choose between deadwood conservation and deadwood harvesting for bioenergy production. On one hand, foresters are interested in short-term profitability and pest control, while others fear potential loss of fertility. Finally, the article shows that specific approaches to deadwood conservation ought to be negotiated at a local scale, pending further scientific investigation into the impact of deadwood on biodiversity and the development of more positive attitudes toward ecological concerns in the forest owners’ community.

The aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate the short-term changes of occlusal contacts and muscle activity after orthodontic treatment during the use of a multi-layer clear retainer. Evaluation was done with the T-scan and BioEMG systems. A total of 18 subjects were included, who were evaluated at three time intervals—T0 at debonding, T1 at one month after retainer delivery, and T2 at four months after retainer delivery. The T-scan and electromyography (EMG) data were recorded simultaneously. The T-scan system recorded the occlusion time, disclusion time and force distribution. The EMG waves were quantified by calculating the asymmetry index and activity index. The time variables changed but not significantly. Occlusal force decreased in the anterior dentition and increased in the posterior dentition during T0–T2. There was no clear evidence of a relationship between unbalanced occlusal forces and muscle activity. In most subjects, the temporalis anterior muscle was more dominant than the masseter muscle. From this preliminary computerized study, there were no significant changes in the state of the occlusion or muscle activity during the short-term retention period.

The production of knot-free and high-quality wood can be a vital issue in silviculture and forest management. In this study, knot properties, branch occlusion, and wood discoloration were investigated in an 11-year-old Mytilaria laosensis plantation in Guangxi, China, to examine the effectiveness of natural pruning in reducing knot-related defects. A total of 1513 occluded branches from 20 trees were sampled and dissected. Occluded branches were most common at heights of 2–6 m, and the mean diameter of the occluded branches gradually increased with height from the base to 6 m. Linear and generalized linear mixed-effect models were developed to reveal the relationship between branch occlusion and discoloration. The mortality of branches was highest in the third and fourth year and it took roughly three to six years to occlude. The mixed-models indicated that the branch occlusion time was positively correlated with the occluded branch diameter and dead branch stub length, and negatively correlated with the stem radial increment during branch occlusion. Branch discoloration was positively correlated with the occluded branch diameter and branch occlusion time, and was negatively correlated with the branch angle. The probability of wood discoloration also increased with the branch occlusion time. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the spatiotemporal allocation and internal characteristics of occluded branches, and provide a reference for growing high-quality M. laosensis wood.

Abstract In North Alabama, dogwood anthracnose (Discula destructiva) was the most common and damaging disease identified in stands of native flowering dogwood (Cornus florida). In the spring of 1992 and 1993, this disease was observed at 59% and 64%, respectively, of the forest and park sites surveyed. Highest incidence and severity of dogwood anthracnose was recorded in the Appalachian Mountains and adjoining foothills of the Piedmont at elevations of 372 to 558 m (1200 to 1800 ft) in the northeastern corner of Alabama near Georgia and Tennessee. At selected sites in Cherokee, Cleburne, DeKalb, Jackson, and Madison Counties, approximately 90% to 100% of the trees examined displayed diagnostic symptoms of dogwood anthracnose. Extensive blighting of the leaves, shoot dieback, epicormic shoot formation, and sometimes tree death were noted. Lower levels of anthracnose damage were recorded on trees in several additional counties in northeast Alabama. Survey results indicate that this disease has not spread onto flowering dogwood in other counties in North Alabama. Spot anthracnose (Elsinoe corni) and Botrytis blight (Botrytis cinerea) were found far less frequently and at fewer locations on flowering dogwood than dogwood anthracnose. Typically, damage attributed to either disease was unobtrusive and of little threat to tree health.

Short term experimental and clinical preservation of kidneys is presently best accomplished by hypothermic continuous pulsatile perfusion with cryoprecipitated and millipore filtered plasma. This study was undertaken to observe ultrastructural changes occurring during 24-hour preservation using the above mentioned method.A kidney was removed through a midline incision from healthy mongrel dogs under pentobarbital anesthesia. The kidneys were flushed immediately after removal with chilled electrolyte solution and placed on a LI-400 preservation system and perfused at 8-10°C. Serial kidney biopsies were obtained at 0-½-1-2-4-8-16 and 24 hours of preservation. All biopsies were prepared for electron microscopy. At the end of the preservation period the kidneys were autografted.
