This paper presents the contextual meanings of the English terms used by the staff in Claro Hotel Makassar. The researcher observed three departments in a hotel; they are Housekeeping, Front Office and Food & Beverage department. The result of the research shows that there are many types of the English terms used in hospitality; some of the terms are categorized as the English special terms due to its contextual meaning. Furthermore, the researcher found that almost all staffs understand the terms even though they do not speak English fluently. However, for the new employer and trainee, most of them are somewhat distressed and said they did not know the terms because their educational background is not hospitality and the trainee said that some of the terms are not in their school textbook. Thus, it is essential for the English for Specific Purposes practitioners and particularly for the teachers of English for Hotel to understand and teach the contextual meanings of the particular English terms used in the hotel industry.

A plethora of studies has investigated theft in the workplace in various industries. However, few studies investigated the motivations behind hotel employee theft especially among Generation Z undergraduates working full time as part of their internship. This targeted sample group is pivotal to the hotel industry as they are the future generation of hotel leaders. These reasons can be attitudinal such as excitement, influenced by fellow colleagues and perceived ease of committing the theft. To address this research gap, this study utilised the established theory of planned behaviour to investigate underlying motivations of employee theft behaviour in the hotel industry. Personal interviews were conducted with 29 hotel management undergraduates who were doing their internships as full-time hotel employees in various frontline jobs in food and beverage, housekeeping and front office. Results revealed the adrenaline feeling when committing hotel employee theft as the key motivator. The most influential social group was colleagues in the same department. The main perceived difficulty was the grey area of defiant behaviour and what actually constitutes as employee theft.

The study investigated the effectiveness of branding on customer loyalty in some selected hotels in Accra. In all, 250 questionnaires were administered to the customers and 200 representing 80% were retrieved. Five selected hotels in Accra were used for the research. The study revealed that some hotels apply branding strategies in selling their products while others do not. This was attributed to the fact that managers of those hotels are unaware of the benefits of effective branding strategies. The study also revealed that services that attract customers most to a hotel include front office, food and beverage and housekeeping. From management perspective, it was realized that 40% of customers mostly patronize housekeeping services and 40% also patronize food and beverage services mostly. Finally the study found that, factors such as trust, commitment, high quality services, customer satisfaction and reward programmes influence customer loyalty in the hotel industry. Customer satisfaction appeared to be the major factor that influences customer loyalty in hotels. Hotel managers and employees should therefore maintain a friendly relationship with customers and customer’s needs should constantly be met as this could help to make customers highly satisfied.

Anti-corruption has garnered increasing attention, especially in China, where President Xi launched an influential and far-reaching anti-corruption campaign in late 2012. A better understanding of the effects of anti-corruption efforts on the hotel sector can reveal insights into the development of the Chinese hotel industry. Based on the quarterly data on China’s hotel industry in 49 cities from quarter 2 of 2010 to quarter 4 of 2015, this study investigates how the anti-corruption campaign (measured by anti-corruption inspections and the number of corruption lawsuits) has influenced hotel industry demand in China. Hypotheses are developed from China’s unique cultural environment of guanxi combined with rent-seeking theory and the crowding-out principle. Empirical results confirm a significant and negative effect of the anti-corruption campaign on hotel lodging and food and beverage demand. Several factors, including a city’s administrative position as a provincial capital, hotel class, level of tourism dependence, and local residents’ entertainment expenditure, are found to moderate the effect of the anti-corruption campaign on hotels’ lodging demand significantly. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed in light of these findings.

This article presents the results and theorization of a 4-year Grounded Theory project that sought to understand the processes and dynamics involved in the professional adaptation of internationally educated social workers now practicing in Canada. In-depth interviews with 66 participants, who undertook social work education outside of Canada and have subsequently settled to practice in the country, were conducted. Results highlight that the social work educational background of the professionals not only offers key conceptual, theoretical, and analytical foundations needed to adapt knowledge and skills to practice abroad, but also provides tools to navigate and negotiate professional adaptation processes as a whole. We conclude that ultimately, social workers may adapt well to their new work contexts because of the transferability of social work skills, knowledge, and values to new practice settings, thus facilitating interventions with services users and also their own process of professional adaptation.
