Hilda Doolittle (1886-1946) is an American poet, novelist and translator, generally called H.D.  In her Autobiographical novel, HERmione unpublished until 1981, Hilda presents her experimental work in which she imposes a narrative form upon her fictionalized accounts of her tangled personal relations. It is a novel about well-known literary people and a story of forbidden desires, it invokes the patterns of the genre to examine the interpretation of sexuality and textuality in a narrative of development. HER is a literary suppressed, figuratively repressed story of origins whose private telling was essential to public retellings of how Hilda Doolittle became H.D.      Hilda Doolittle's novel is characterized by being revolutionary , experimenting through repetition of names of people , disguised through specific literary language attacking the patriarchal mode of a stern father and a passive , submissive mother. Lights are shed through a psychological approach on the writers traumatic experiences as a result of war consequences on one hand and personal , agonic experiences due to her doubt about her Sexuality being torn between lesbian desire and heterosexual feeling towards a man she loved but was not able to marry.            H.D.'s aim is to create a change in women's state from the conventional treatment of women as an "object" to a new "subject" worthy of description getting benefit from Sigmund Freud's psychological analysis of Hilda Doolittle's character when she was sick. Being an effective imagist and a lover of Arts, she creates a new literary movement depending on common speech and freedom in choosing subjects in a daring style. Since the subject of the novel is about the psychological issues of women's identity problems , feminist critics views like Susan Stanford Friedman , Rachel Blau  Duplessis  and Helen Cixous's theory of Psychology are taken into consideration in this research

The aim of the study is to define how and to what effect the first-person narrative form is used in Oswald Zebris’s novel “Māra” (2019) and how the other elements of the narrative support it. The analysis of the novel employs both semiotic and narratological ideas, paying in-depth attention to those elements of the novel’s structure that can help the reader understand the growth path and power of the heroine Māra, a 16-year-old young woman entangled in external and internal conflict. As the novel is predominantly written from the title character’s point of view, as she is the first-person narrator in 12 of the 16 chapters of the novel, the article reveals the principle of chapter arrangement, the meaning of the second first-person narrator (in four novel chapters) and the main points of the dramatic structure of the story. Although in interviews after the publication of the novel, the author Zebris has emphasised that he has written the novel about a brave girl who at her 16 years is ready to make the decisions necessary for her personal growth, her open, candid, and emotionally narrated narrative creates inner resistance in readers, especially the heroine’s peers, and therefore makes it difficult to observe and appreciate her courage and the positive metamorphosis in the dense narrative of the heroine’s feelings, impressions, memories, imaginary scenes, various impulses and comments on the action. It can be explained by the form of narration that requires the reader to identify with the narrator; however, it is cumbersome if the narrator’s motives, details, and emotions, expressed openly and honestly, are unacceptable, incomprehensible, or somehow exaggerated.

This study explores the identity formation and mobility of the role of Antoinette in the novel "Wide Sargasso Sea" from the perspective of the cultural and human geography. In general, it is a space and place study. The thesis suggests that, Antoinette has some conditions and circumstances that she developed in an autonomic manner with different experiences in order to navigate and recognize the dangerous and safe spaces around her. Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys, elaborates a self-sacrifice experience that the protagonist went through in her search for identity, which she lost due to the circumstances around her. In this research, a psychological analysis of Antoinette's personality will be taken, moreover; an attempt is made to find out the reasons for her schizophrenic behavior. The research focuses on Antoinette's shattered identity and the specters she faced in her life, which ultimately played a huge role in her madness. Also, the visible opposite aspects of black/white, rationality/unconsciousness, male/female, and sanity/madness are conceived by her conscious mind, and it causes the frantic thoughts of insanity, womanhood, and blackness. Also, it sheds light on Antoinette's journey in life to figure out where she belongs and her struggle in this search. Antoinette's personality and identity crisis as a Creole girl will be discussed in depth. There are different areas that are explored in this paper; such as the interpretation of how the surrounding spaces affect Antoinette and the reasons behind the absence of a loving mother in Wide Sargasso Sea. Furthermore, Rochester's character is also examined to find out how the masculine space differs from feminine space, and to what extent Mr. Rochester's cruelty harms Antoinette. Another important thing that is discussed in the paper is the effect of family relationships on a person's identity, and how it becomes a reason of mental disorder.


The paper aims to analyse the novel Oleander Girl and explore the plight of the protagonist Korobi, a young girl who goes to America in search of her identity which she believes to have lost in India due to her parent’s cohabitation. Since her mother’s live in relationship with an Afro-American could not be solemnized in India due to the intervention of her grandparents, she has to bear the brunt as a child born out of wedlock. The mystery of her birth is known to her only when she goes in search of her father to America. The main reason of her visit to America is to find out her identity as to whom she was born. During her endeavour to trace her father, she comes across situation which question her identity and her whereabouts which in turn bring forth inexplicable woes to her. The author, Chitra Banerjee attempts to expose that America though a land of freedom has not assured any safety to Korobi until she metamorphoses herself to be one like an American uprooting her true identity as an Indian. Now her transformations both physically and mentally instils confidence and she succeeds in locating her father. Korobi so long believed that knowing about her father would help her in quenching her thirst to establish her identity but in vain. Her father does not manifest any paternal instincts towards her. Though disappointing, Korobi learns to pursue her life as a transformed new woman bearing a new identity by re rooting in an alien land.

This paper aims to describe the female characters in the novel Kabar Bunga by Marsiraji Thahir, the conflicts and its causes, and the impact of the conflicts experienced by women in the novel Kabar Bunga by Marsiraji Thahir. This novel is examined by a psychological approach in literature, a literary approach that emphasizes the psychological aspects of the types and laws of psychology that can be applied to literary works. The data is qualitative since the purpose of this research is to explain or describe the phenomena of the researches deeply. The data were obtained by categorizing all the related dialogues in the story, then psychologically analyzed. Triangulation was used to validate the data.  After finishing all the steps of analyzing data, the interpretations were made based on the data and the theory. The results of the research were, psychologically, the main character in this novel is described as a person who often feels worried, frightened, keeping the reality up, and she is burdened by the problems faced. This portrayal is the representation of Wulan as a woman and woman emotionally and mentally is depicted as a weakness persona without having the ability to solve the problems.

AbstractTim O’Brien’s Vietnam-based The Things They Carried has been criticized for exclusively depicting the painful and traumatic experiences of the American soldiers in the war zone. Despite the limited number of Vietnamese characters in the novel, and despite their relegation to the role of powerless and voiceless onlookers, their presence shows the degree of the power imbalance between Vietnam and America. This article demonstrates how O’Brien infused sentiments in his stories to emphasize his opposition to the war and his concern for the dignity of the Vietnamese people. O’Brien asserts that the main purpose of the United States’s invasion was to make Vietnam a learnable and controllable place. Through his critique of the United States’s imperial ambitions in Vietnam, O’Brien provides a representative voice for the people of Vietnam to share their sufferings from an unjust war.

This chapter argues that to perform a site reading of Cormac McCarthy's The Road is to appreciate how the text functions as a novel of purpose that aims to vivify the planet as what Latour would call a “matter of concern.” Still, The Road reads less as a critique of contemporary social problems than as a “thought-experiment,” a sort of literary climate model, forecasting a chillingly plausible correlation between a ruined site and a grisly social order. By imagining this correlation through narrative form, McCarthy offers his own striking contribution to environmental and sociological thought, a contribution that starts to become apparent the moment we ask how his setting functions as an actant, both in the novel itself and beyond.

Abstract Psychological analysis of characters in ordinary novels is mainly a qualitative analysis, which is easily affected by the researchers’ reading level, theoretical literacy, subjective experience, and other factors. With the development of computer technology and big data, stable and systematic personality can more accurately describe the psychology of text characters. This article adopts the method of literary intelligence analysis based on data mining and statistics, through the Chinese psychological analysis system, the language of the characters in the novel of ordinary world can be counted, processed, and disposed, and then obtains the big five personality prediction scores of the characters. Furthermore, the validity of the intelligent analysis method is confirmed by examining the verification of the predictive scores in the text and literature. After verification by many parties, the predicted results of this article are supported by the text and literature, which shows that literary intelligence analysis of novel characters’ personalities is effective.

Chapter 6 addresses the ethical issues involved in engaging with the perpetrator’s perspective by analyzing Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes (2006, The Kindly Ones). It discusses imaginative resistance, difficult empathy, and identification in relation to readerly engagement and perspective-taking. The chapter shows how the interplay between immersiveness and critical distance can produce a narrative dynamic that allows the reader to engage emotionally—but without uncritically adopting the protagonist’s perspective—with an ethically problematic life-world. It analyzes how the novel performatively shows, through the breakdown of narrative mastery, that no exhaustive comprehension is possible. In relation to different logics of narrative, the chapter articulates the ethical significance of self-reflexive narrative form and relates the hermeneutic notion of docta ignorantia—knowing that one does not know—to the novel’s way of dealing with the conditions of possibility of the Holocaust and with the limits of understanding, representing, and narrating it.

Abstract William Dean Howells's 1891 novel of interracial marriage, An Imperative Duty, has recently received increasing critical attention because of its saturation with the language of contemporary scientific racism and its complex and apparently inconsistent approach to questions of race and identity. The novel's other major conceptual concern with questions of moral duty, clearly announced in its title, has generally been neglected in this discussion. This essay examines the crucial interplay between questions of race and ethics, arguing that Howells's novel undertakes an ethical critique of late-nineteenth-century scientific racism from a specifically Pragmatist philosophical perspective. Reasoning according to Pragmatist principles, and pursuing an inherently Pragmatist narrative form, the novel implicitly asks its readers to understand the ““facts”” of race in terms of their intersections with personal and social morality rather than in strict accord with the essentialist claims of ascendant nineteenth-century race theory. In its refusal of ontological absolutism and its embrace of an ethically pluralist and instrumentalist approach to questions of race, Howells's novel offers a Pragmatist challenge to the interlocking absolutisms of traditional ethics and contemporary scientific racism.
