Background: A majority of parents of children with chronic illness encounter physical conditions, as well as some degrees of burnout, anxiety, and depression. This study examined the prevalence of burnout in the primary caregivers of children with chronic conditions and its related factors. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 385 family caregivers of children with chronic conditions who were selected by convenience sampling method from 4 healthcare centers in Kashan and Isfahan Provinces, Iran. A demographics questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were used to gather the required data. The MBI assesses caregiver burnout in 3 domains of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS using Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Chi-Squared test, Fisher’s Exact test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and linear regression analysis. P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: The Mean±SD age of the examined caregivers and children were 38.2±8.04 and 8.9±4.9 years, respectively. Fifty percent of the research participants were fathers, and 74.3% had a family size of >4 members. The ill children were mostly boys (60%) and afflicted with renal (45.2%) or neurological (18.2%) disorders. The mean scores of the caregivers in the 3 subscales of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, were 22.21, 6.40, and 13.24, respectively. However, 62.3% and 47.9% of the caregivers experienced high or moderate levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization; nearly all of them (99.2%) experienced reduced personal accomplishment. The age of the child, the type of chronic condition, the frequency of medical visits, as well as the caregiver’s age, job, income, and family size, could predict caregiver burnout (r2=0.17). Conclusion: The family caregivers of children with chronic conditions experience moderate burnout. Nurses and other healthcare providers should be aware of the signs of caregiver burnout and its contributing factors; accordingly; appropriate plans should be made for the periodic evaluation of family caregivers.

This study examined the relationships between burnout and job satisfaction of academics along with other related factors. The study group comprised 194 academics. The results demonstrated that the most important variable that predicts emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment is intrinsic job satisfaction. It was found that the status of academics is capable of predicting not only emotional exhaustion but also personal accomplishment. In addition female gender was found to be an important predictor of a lower level depersonalization; and extrinsic satisfaction in lower personal accomplishment. No significant relationship was found with marital status, seniority and being abroad for academic purposes.

AbstractBackgroundBurnout syndrome has adverse consequences for individuals, causing a variety of cognitive, affective, physical, behavioural and motivational problems. We aim to assess burnout in Portuguese radiation therapists, for who high levels of contact with patients may potentially lead to burnout.MethodsRadiation therapists working in Portugal were invited via e-mail to participate in the study by filling in a survey. The latter had two components: a social-demographic questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey.ResultsA total of 103 people responded to the survey, 95 of which employed as radiation therapists. The mean burnout scores were 20.60 ± 11.21, 7.43 ± 5.34 and 35.02 ± 6.02, for the emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment subscales, respectively. In the same order, the total of radiation therapists presenting high levels of burnout were 29%, 14.9% and 29.3% for the different dimensions. The mean scores of burnout did not differ significantly regarding gender, civil status, working in the public or private sector and years of service. Radiation therapists aged 40 years or older presented greater scores of burnout, though with no statistical significance.ConclusionRadiation therapists working in Portugal were seen to have average scores of burnout in the emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment subscales.

Abstract Purpose Studies of critical care physicians and nursing personnel indicate a potentially high rate of burnout. To date there is a paucity of data in critical care pharmacists assessing burnout in this group. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of risk of burnout in critical care pharmacists. Methods Critical care pharmacists were solicited via email to complete an anonymous, electronic questionnaire regarding burnout. Subject demographic and employment characteristics were collected along with the validated, 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory Health Services Survey in the study cohort. Burnout was assessed from 3 aspects, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. High degree of burnout was defined as a score >27 in emotional exhaustion, or score >10 in depersonalization, or score <33 in personal achievement. Risk factors of burnout were evaluated using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results Out of 3,140 critical care pharmacists, 193 (6.1%) completed surveys. The mean scores were 25.3, 7.5, and 36.7 for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal achievement, respectively. Overall, 123 pharmacists (64%) reported at least one syndrome of burnout, and 28 pharmacists (14.5%) reported burnout in all 3 scales. No single risk factor was identified to be associated with the risk of burnout. Conclusion Risk of burnout is high in critical care pharmacists, at 64%, and is comparable to the risk in other critical care practitioner groups. This emphasizes the importance of continuing to evaluate risk factors for burnout and providing resources for burnout prevention to high-risk practitioners.

Introduction: Job burnout is a long-term response to job-related emotional and interpersonal stressors. These stressors are associated with individual, interpersonal, and organizational factors. Objective: This study aimed to determine the degree of burnout and its related factors among surgical technologists. Materials and Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in hospitals affiliated with the Iran University of Medical Sciences. A total of 125 surgical technologists were recruited by stratified sampling method. The study data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and then analyzed by the independent t-test, 1-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression with a simultaneous model. Results: More than half of the participants (52%) were in the age group of fewer than 30 years. The Mean±SD scores of job burnout in terms of intensity and frequency were 47. 88±17.5 and 47. 95±17.42, respectively. The mean job burnout scores of the majority of surgical technologists in dimensions of emotional exhaustion (intensity), depersonalization (intensity and frequency), and reduced personal accomplishment (intensity and frequency) were at a low level, but it was at a moderate level in the dimension of emotional exhaustion (frequency) among more than half of them. Through a multiple regression, the identified predictors of job burnout (frequency) were education level (β=9.377, 95%CI; 1.618-17.136, P<0.05) and work experience (β=-21.091, 95%CI; -38.201- -3.980, P<0.05). Meanwhile, education level (β=8.320, 95%CI; 0.568- 16.073, P<0.05), work experience (β=-30.976, 95%CI; -54.715 - -7.236, P<0.05), and hours of night shifts per month (β=-10.660, 95%CI; -18.205- -3.115, P=0.01) predicted job burnout (intensity). Conclusion: The job burnout of more than half of surgical technologists in the dimension of emotional exhaustion (frequency) was at a moderate level. Novice workers and operating room BScs suffered more from job burnout than those with an Associate degree and experienced workers. In this regard, healthcare and planner providers must pay attention to operating room BScs, especially novice workers.

Background: Identifying nurse burnout to be of significance, as it directly impacts work ethic, patient satisfaction, safety and best practice. Nurses are more susceptible to fatigue and burnout, due to the fact of working in highly stressful environments and caring for people in their most vulnerable state. It is imperative to pinpoint and alleviate potential aspects that can lead to nurse burnout. Research Hypothesis: Educating nurses on recognizing factors influencing nurse burnout and offering effective interventions to combat stress, will lead to better coping and adaptation skills; hence, decreasing the level of nurse fatigue and burnout. Assisting nurses to be cognizant of the symptoms of stress and nurse burnout will lead to the development of positive adaptive mechanisms. However, nurses without this recognition, tend to develop maladaptive psychological skills. Research Methodology: The quality improvement project gathered data on factors influencing burnout via Maslach Burnout Inventory Tool (MBI). MBI is the most commonly used instrument in measuring burnout, by capturing three subscales of burnout: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA). Results: From a sample of 31 graduate nursing (employed) students, MBI survey was administered via survey monkey. Gathered data (n=31), via descriptive statistics and standard deviation, represented the extent of deviation for the nursing population as a whole. The quality improvement study revealed the standard deviation (SD) for emotional exhaustion, a low SD of 0.3; indicating that data points appear to be closer to the mean (expected value) of the emotional exhaustion data set. Additionally, depersonalization data showed SD values that were widely spread; however, yielding a low SD of 0.42 from the mean on depersonalization. Lastly, higher scores derived from Maslach’s Burnout Inventory tool suggests increased levels of personal accomplishment. Thus, data set revealed lower levels of depersonalization in regards to sample size. Moreover, Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson r) identified a positive correlation between independent variable of stress levels and factors influencing nurse burnout, with combined teaching of ways to combat stress in the workplace. Effectiveness of this was reported by ninety-eight percent (98%) of participants. Significance: This study maintains that limited emotional exhaustion, a strong sense of identity and achieving personal accomplishments minimizes burn out.

Abstract Background The use of technology for work has become an unavoidable component of most occupations. It is considered a double-edged sword; it has a massive impact on employees’ mental health and productivity, mainly when used outside the working hours. This practice is referred to as technology-assisted supplemental work (TASW). This study aimed to determine the effect of supplemental work using technology behavior on burnout levels among Saudi board residents and its consequences on work productivity. Results Three hundred seventy-seven residents were involved in this study to assess their TASW behavior, burnout level, and presenteeism. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scale is used to assess burnout, which is composed of three subscales: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA). This study revealed that a high risk of EE was found among 52.5% of residents, 12.2% were at high risk of DP, and 53.1% had low PA. The mean score of TASW was 19.7 (SD 3.75) out of 30 points, while the mean score of presenteeism (SPS-6) was 18.5 (SD 4.49) out of 30 points. A significant correlation was found between SPS-6 and MBI subscales including emotional exhaustion (r=−0.642, p<0.001), depersonalization (r=−0.406, p<0.001), and personal accomplishment (r=0.206, p<0.001), but association with TASW did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05). Conclusion Burnout “specifically Emotional Exhaustion” was noted to be significantly high among residents in different specialties in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, several factors in the study were evidently demonstrated to be highly related to burnout which is directly associated with lost work productivity. However, our study suggests that extra working hours at home using technology were not associated with burnout or an increase in productivity.

Nursing is considered to be an at-risk profession of burnout due to daily exposure to difficult situations such as death and pain care. In addition, some units such as the intensive care unit (ICU), can be stressful due to high levels of morbidity and mortality and ethical dilemmas. Burnout causes a deterioration in quality of care, increasing the risk of mortality in patients due to poor performance and errors in the healthcare environment. The aim of this study was to analyse the levels, prevalence and related factors of burnout in ICU nurses. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out in the Medline, Scopus and CINAHL databases. Fifteen articles were found for the systematic review and four for the meta-analysis. With a sample of n = 1986 nurses, the meta-analytic estimate prevalence for high emotional exhaustion was 31% (95% CI, 8–59%), for high depersonalization was 18% (95% CI, 8–30%), and for low personal accomplishment was 46% (95% CI, 20–74%). Within the dimensions of burnout, emotional exhaustion had a significant relationship with depression and personality factors. Both sociodemographic factors (being younger, single marital status, and having less professional experience in ICU) and working conditions (workload and working longer hours) influence the risk of burnout syndrome.

The present research assessed the predictors of burnout using a hypothesized model of burnout and its predictors. The sample of 1693 public school teachers from six districts of Punjab was employed. A self-developed instrument Emotional Burnout Scale (EBS; α = .81) was used for assessing burnout rate among teachers with its three dimensions, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment; also authors developed an Institutional Factors Measuring scale to measure predictors of burnout (α = .80). It comprised six school-related factors including personal, administrative, environmental, insecurities, material goods, and training. These factors, along with demographic variables like marital status, experience, qualification, job status, school level were used to predict the three dimensions of burnout. The results showed paths in predicted direction among proposed model; the personal factor strongly predicted emotional exhaustion whereas environmental factor was found to be a strong predictor for depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment in teachers. Implications for practice are discussed.
