This phenomenological study provided an in-depth description of the internal meaning of the lived experiences of Canadian-born and foreign-born Chinese students in Canada and uncovered the differences in their social experiences. The study used semi-structured interviews to allow the participants to express their views on their lives in Northern Ontario, Canada. Four themes emerged: (a) perceptions of ethnic identity; (b) cultural integration; (c) perceptions of academic performance and (d) the effect of Canadian education on career options. The study revealed that Canadian-born Chinese students differed from their foreign-born counterparts in their viewpoints on ethnic identity; their perceptions concerning acculturation; and academic performance. They shared similarities in their views about Canadian and Chinese educational systems, teaching styles, and their career expectations.

Furthering innovation in English as a foreign language curriculum has been a concern for the Colombian educational system for many years. Nevertheless, the major attempts at the national level continue to fail. Through this phenomenological study of 12 participants at a an urban public school in grades 6-12 I attempted to answer the phenomenological question, “What were the lived experiences of key stakeholders involved in implementing an aligned curriculum at an urban public school in a northern city in Colombia, South America? “The theoretical framework that guides this study included innovation, the theory of policy attribution, and the learner-centered philosophy. The study employed Moustakas’ modification of the Stevick-Colaizzi’s-Keen method of phenomenological analysis and van Manen’s (1990) hermeneutic approach to phenomenology. The researcher collected the data through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and reflective diaries. Seven themes emerged from the data: (a) aligned curriculum and political aims, (b) awareness of the significance of affectiveness, (c) a sense of ownership and lifelong learning, (d) communication as the cornerstone of implementation, (e) ability to face uncertainty and challenges, (f) ability to create transformational leadership, and (g) transcendence toward innovation. The study highlights the feasibility of curriculum innovation at the secondary level with key stakeholders’ commitment and full potential.

Abstract Background: Chronic illness in children causes more mental health risks for parents than other members of the family. Therefore, exploring the experiences of parents living with young women who have multiple sclerosis and presenting them to healthcare planners and managers can have a positive impact on community health. This study aimed to explore the experiences of parents of young women with multiple sclerosis in Iran. Methods: This research was a phenomenological study, and sampling was continued until data saturation, and 12 participants were chosen. The data were gathered using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: Open coding resulted in 450 codes, and after several stages of analysis and integration of similar codes, five main concepts, and 21 sub-concepts was produced. The main concepts included distress, trapping, adaptation barriers, response to illness, and reconciliation with the disease. Conclusion: This study showed the disease affects all dimensions of the parents' life and can lead to the experiences that are new to them and may lead to confusion. These findings can lead to more effective parental care for their daughters. It can also reduce the burden of disease on the family, the health system, and the community.

Background With epidemics emerging at a hastened pace, a phenomenological study allows researchers to cast aside their perceptions to understand nurses’ lived experiences, and from there to discover previously unavailable insights at the epicentre of a pandemic. Aims To understand volunteer nurses’ lived experiences in Wuhan. Methods A descriptive phenomenological study with a purposive sampling strategy was used to describe volunteer nurses’ experiences in Wuhan. Interviews continued until data saturation. Ten semi-structured interviews of 30 to 60 minutes duration were conducted from 27 to 30 March 2020. The narrative data were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed using Colaizzi’s method. Results Four themes emerged: mission and challenges denoted the participants’ realisation of the grim challenges ahead; challenges called for actions that described the concerted actions through partnerships and familial bonds; caring acts from all around revealed an external support system; and actions that made a difference portrayed the interplay of actions with feelings, thoughts and further actions to accomplish the mission. Conclusions This phenomenological study showed the interplay of nurses’ intentions and actions, and ‘actions speak louder than words’ when nurses were motivated by workmates’ actions to change their feelings, thoughts and actions. The concerted efforts can be used to develop educational programmes, management strategies and institutional policy on structure, system and resource utilisation, as well as dissemination of scientific knowledge to global healthcare workers and the public.

Abstract Background: Exploring lived experiences of recovered COVID-19 patients might have scientific, social, and policy relevance that apply to the healthcare infrastructure. This multi-center phenomenological study was conducted to explore lived experiences of Palestinian patients who recovered from COVID-19.  Methods: In this qualitative study, a phenomenological descriptive approach was used. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with patients who recovered from COVID-19 (n = 20). The transcripts of the audio recorded interviews were analyzed by using Giorgio’s phenomenological analysis method. Results: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 male and 6 female participants. The age of the participants ranged from 25-50 years. Nine themes and multiple subthemes emerged from the qualitative data. The themes were relevant to patient’s feelings about the experience, mental issues, social discriminations/stigma, symptoms, life in isolation, using supportive treatment, personal preventive measures, social support, and life after recovery.Conclusion: Survivors who were interviewed in this study recounted devastating experiences with regard to their mental health, social stigmatization, feeling guilt, shame, and hesitant to regain contact with others. Mental health issues should be addressed as a part of the care plan for patients with COVID-19. More studies are still needed to investigate if introducing mental healthcare providers to the care team of patients with COVID-19 can improve the experiences of the patients.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding perceptions, feelings, and experiences of Ghanaian patients living with ESRD. This study aimed to discover the experience and meaning of living with ESRD. This qualitative study was conducted using Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology. A total of 13 participants were purposefully selected, and data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Diekelmann, Allen, and Tanner method. After the final analysis, five main themes emerged: Spiritual fluctuation, Living in uncertainty, Period of agony and frustration, Tough fortification, and Changed roles and status. This study provided deep insight and understanding regarding the lived experiences of patients living with end-stage renal disease in Ghana. The results of this study may benefit nursing care in terms of considering the patients’ lived experiences to provide quality and person-centered care.

Bullying has been known as an extensive, persistent, and severe problem in educational institutions across the globe. Despite the research studies on bullying in recent years, most of the research directly focused on its multiple slants and characteristics among students without special needs (SN). Besides, few research studies are known about bullying in universities and its dimensions in the population of students with SN receiving support provision. In light of the above, the present study explored the students’ lived experiences related to bullying and victimization getting an education in universities with peers without SN. The sample of this phenomenological study consisted of 10 participants with SN attending university education. Semi-structured interviews were used as a research method for data collection. All participants shared negative experiences of bullying in universities while studying with students without SN.

There has been speculation by researchers regarding the potential fears, concerns, and difficulties experienced by children of police officers, such as fears about their parent being injured or killed while on duty, ridicule and bullying, or being personally assaulted. More disheartening are the increased potential stressors facing police officers’ children due to increased community hostility across the country over the last few years, particularly among the African American community, stemming from a series of police involved shootings of unarmed African American males. Yet, there remains scant research that has examined the lived experiences of police officers’ children. To address this gap in the policing literature, this study used semi-structured interviews of police officers children in a southern state using a phenomenological methodology to explore the lived experiences of being a child of a police officer. Findings and policy recommendations are discussed.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of interactional pathology among couples with the morbidly jealous male partners by examining the lived experiences of 5 female partners. The study attempted to answer the main research question which was, "How do women experience their communication with their morbidly jealous husbands?" along with some sub questions in different dimensions of marital life. The major data collection tool consisted of semi-structured interviews (Seidman, 2013). Forty to sixty-minute interviews were conducted with each participant. Data analysis included a three-phase process: description, reduction, and interpretation. The latter was completed using the qualitative content analysis by Colaizzi (Colaizzi, 1973). Four categories of lived experiences indicating interactional difficulty among the couples were obtained from the data analysis. These interactional damageswere evident in the experiences of all the women interviewed and consisted of themes related to boundaries, control, intimacy and ‘meta-damages’. The results of the study revealed that the damages begin with those related to boundaries, develop to control and intimacy rooted in meta-damages and finally terminate marital relationships.

Abstract BackgroundOperating room nurses, who are important members of health teams and who serve in an environment full of ethical and work challenges, often face situations that require them to make decisions based on ethical principles. Therefore, compiling ethical codes appropriate to the culture and religion of the community is a good way to improve the quality of nursing services expected by stakeholders.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to examine Operating room nurses’ lived experiences of ethical codes. Research design and methodA hermeneutic phenomenological study was performed. Participants were 10 operating room nurses who were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was performed based on Van Manen methodology.ResultsData analysis revealed 3 main themes and 12 sub-themes that showed the experience of operating room nurses from ethical codes. The main themes were: Adherence to professional commitments, preserving patient dignity and respect for colleagues.ConclusionThe results of this study showed the ethical experiences of operating room nurses. These findings determine the ethical codes in the operating room. It is suggested that using these codes, a guide, and a model be developed to improve the ethical and professional performance of operating room nurses.

Internationalization trends in higher education have become a significantly accentuated issue and student mobility is considered as one of the core components of internationalization in higher education. This study focuses on investigating the lived experiences of international students at a state university in Turkey using qualitative research method and phenomenological design. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews in order to reveal the participants’ experiences and their overall insight into studying abroad. 10 international students from various countries in accordance with the maximum variation sampling technique participated in the current study. The findings provide a rich description of the lived experiences of international students regarding their perceptions of studying abroad. Results of the data analysis yielded two major themes entitled “Perceptions of being an international student: What does it mean? What have they experienced?” and “The assistance and challenges they have been through during their study”.
