This study examines campus organization involvement as a mechanism for social capital development. Researchers used analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine variations in network size, strength, and composition for international students involved in different types of campus organizations. The researchers also examined the relationship of campus organization involvement to international students’ sense of attachment to the university. Students who participated in major-based organizations or leadership programs had larger, less dense, more diverse networks that lead to social networks which are particularly advantageous to social mobility. Students who participated in campus organizations related to their own cultural heritage had networks built of friends from all cultures, creating a greater sense of belonging and attachment to the university. Implications of social capital for practice and future research are discussed.

This study examines the relationship between the use of Social Network Sites and the formation of social capital. Using data from a web survey of employees in Japan (n = 244) and Brazil (n = 251), positive associations between SNS use and social capital development were found in both countries. Cultural differences seem to influence this process; in Brazil, intensity of SNS use has a stronger association with bridging and bonding social capital when perceived enjoyment is high; in Japan, employees use SNS for usefulness and enjoyment reasons, but perceived enjoyment does not interfere with social capital gains. Implications and future research are discussed.

How cooperatives generate and absorb social capital has attracted a great deal of attention due to the fact that they are collective organizations owned and democratically managed by their members, and, accordingly, are argued to be closely linked to the nature and dynamics of social capital. However, the extant literature and knowledge on the relationship between cooperatives and social capital remain unstructured and fragmented. This paper aims to provide a narrative literature review that integrates both sides of the relationship between cooperatives and social capital. On the one hand, one side involves how cooperatives create internal social capital and spread it in their immediate environment, and, on the other hand, it involves how the presence of social capital promotes the creation and development of cooperatives. In addition, our theoretical framework integrates the dark side of social capital, that is, how the lack of trust, reciprocal relationships, transparency, and other social capital components can lead to failure of the cooperative. On the basis of this review, we define a research agenda that synthesizes key trends and promising research avenues for further advancement of theoretical and empirical insights about the relationship between cooperatives and social capital, placing particular emphasis on rural and agricultural cooperatives.

The change in educational paradigms has led to the need to define new methodological regulations that allow to consider the objects of pedagogical reality from a different angle. This led to the need to study traditional issues of pedagogy in an innovative context. The issue of forming students’ independent learning activities is not new for pedagogy. However, we present it from the perspective of an integrative-reflexive approach, which allowed us to identify its internal potential for personal development. The theoretical methods of pedagogical research used in the study: analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, method of causal relationships research, etc., which allowed to mentally penetrate into the essence of the studied pedagogical phenomenon and rethink it in a new educational reality. It is established that the educational independent activity accumulates the reflexive and didactic potential for professional and personal formation and development in the process of studying at the university. The possibilities of reflexive discourse as a way of realizing the reflexive-didactic potential of educational independent activity in the learning process are determined. According to the structure of the process of reflection in educational independent activity we distinguish the stages of reflexive discourse: reflexive-indicative, reflexive-presentative and reflexive-realizational. We consider the relationship of these stages of the discourse with various types of reflection and features of self-assessment, self-analysis, self-design and self-realization as structural components of educational independent activity.

This paper aims at investigating the relationship between the application of innovation and entrepreneurship system and the university competitive advantage in the Jordanian higher education sector.     To collect the required data, the number of some concerned individuals was surveyed through a carefully designed questionnaire that has become the main instrument to obtain the required data.A random sample of university managerial staff was withdrawn from five private Jordanian universities. The collected data was audited, reviewed and statically analyzed using the most relevant statistical test. The results of the statistical analysis have clearly pointed out that university adoption of innovation and entrepreneurship system has a significant effect on its competitive advantage.

Since the 1960s, Australian scientists have speculated on the impact of human arrival on fire regimes in Australia, and on the relationship of landscape fire to extinction of the Pleistocene megafauna of Australia. These speculations have produced a series of contrasting hypotheses that can now be tested using evidence collected over the past two decades. In the present paper, I summarise those hypotheses and review that evidence. The main conclusions of this are that (1) the effects of people on fire regimes in the Pleistocene were modest at the continental scale, and difficult to distinguish from climatic controls on fire, (2) the arrival of people triggered extinction of Australia’s megafauna, but fire had little or no role in the extinction of those animals, which was probably due primarily to hunting and (3) megafaunal extinction is likely to have caused a cascade of changes that included increased fire, but only in some environments. We do not yet understand what environmental factors controlled the strength and nature of cascading effects of megafaunal extinction. This is an important topic for future research.

Abstract In this issue of the Journal, Baranyi et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2019;000(00):000–000) examine the longitudinal associations of perceived neighborhood disorder and social cohesion with depressive symptoms among persons aged 50 years or more in 16 different countries. An important contribution of their article is that they study how neighborhood-level social capital relates to depression in different welfare-state contexts. Although the authors provide empirical evidence for some significant differences between welfare states in the relationship between social capital and depression, they say little about potential explanations. In this commentary, I draw attention to welfare-state theory and how it could provide us with a greater understanding of Baranyi et al.’s findings. I also discuss the potential downsides of grouping countries into welfare regimes. I primarily focus on the associations between social cohesion and depression, as these associations were generally stronger than those for neighborhood disorder and depression. Finally, I provide some suggestions for future research within the field and discuss whether the findings could be used to guide policies aimed at increasing social cohesion and health.

The study aimed is to examine the relationship of brand image and service quality towards student loyaltyin purchasing at a university shop, namely UniShop, in the southern state of Malaysia. By understandingstudent loyalty, the university management might encourage students to shop at the UniShop and generaterevenues within the campus. The decreasing sales of UniShop are affected by a hypermarket located withinwalking distance to the university in August 2017. From the literature, the entrance of multinationalcompanies might affect the small companies surrounding them, including UniShop which is a smallenterprise. Thus, the research examined student loyalty in purchasing at UniShop by distributingquestionnaires to the students of the university. The researchers used proportionate stratified randomsampling to generalize the finding across all semester students in the university. The findings showed thatbrand image and service quality played an important role in student loyalty. Students were the maincustomers of a university shop, contributed most of the shop’s business sustainability, and generate indirectincome to the university. In order to maintain student loyalty, UniShop has to take some initiatives includingto increase the scale of products, focuses on student-centered services, improve the shop layout, and sellexclusive university merchandise to increase the student's self-belonging to the university products. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the differences in the strength of social capital that is bonding and bridging two community groups, namely land-dwellers and Sama Bajo boat-dwellers in three islands in Wakatobi Marine National Park. This study used a post-positivistic research paradigm, and the primary data were collected by using a questionnaire to 240 respondents who represented the group of land-dwellers and Sama Bajo boat-dwellers on the islands of Wangi-wangi, Kaledupa, and Tomia. This research was also supported by qualitative data through in-depth interviews from several informants and desk studies. The results showed that bridging social capital relations tend to be weak in the two forms of interactions between the Sama Bajo and the land-dwellers on Wangi-wangi Island and Kaledupa Island, while bridging social capital tend to be secured in Tomia Island. We found that the social context through the historical links in the past and identity played a role in the relationship of bridging social capital and bonding social capital in the three communities as an analytical unit of this research.
