The local scouringcharacteristicsuroundings several bridge pillars forms have a different characteristics, some forms of pillars of the bridge are considered optimum when equipped with the data: discharge, slope of riverbed, material, and on the same flow direction, that will produce the most shallow scouring. The objective of this study is to find the form of pillars that will generate the most superficial scouring. The study is conducted at the Laboratory of River in Surakarta. The used flume has length of 10.00 m, width 0.40 m and height of 0.40 m. The forms of pillar studied are two cylindrical pillars, sheet pile and full walls pillar. The slope of the riverbed (i) are varied, there are three: 0.006, 0.0125 and 0.020. The flow discharge rate there are five variations: 5,37 m3/s, 8,94 m3/s, 12,52 m3/s, 14,31 m3/s, 17,89 m3/s. Land was used at material for river bed, and, there are three kinds of value D50: 0.60 mm, 0.80 mm and 1.00 mm. The research method includes: a field survey, two dimension physical model test with 1:20 scale. The results showed for each pillar shapes have different characters. The deepest scouring suroundings the pillar beside the point, at the beginning of the first minute to the 20th minute in a sudden deep scour the riverbed and form of river bed suroundings are the pillars up and down irregularly. In the 20th minute until the end of the stream scouring decreased almost linearly lines are horizontzl. In general the pile type pillars was found to cause the minimum scouring than other pillar shapes.

Abstract This study introduces a large offshore cofferdam installed by suction, unlike conventional ones such as a sheet-pile type, and proposes an effective suction cap for the cofferdam. In structural design view of the cofferdam, there are several critical issues due to its large size. This study conducted structural analyses of stiffened caps for large offshore suction cofferdam using fully nonlinear finite element models, and analyzed changes in behaviors of the cap due to stiffener arrangements to provide design insights. For finite element models, the diameter and the thickness of the suction cap (circular plate only) are 20m and 0.07m, respectively. Suction pressure on the cap was assumed to be 100kPa, all parts of the cofferdam except the cap are considered as boundary conditions. By investigating conventional suction anchors, several stiffener arrangement patterns on the cap of suction cofferdam were derived, and each arrangement was estimated by comparing stress and deformation of the cap. Also, reaction distributions on the edge of the cap were investigated to analyze effects of the stiffener arrangement on the interface behaviors between cap and cofferdam.

<p>The Prêcheur river is located to the West of Montagne Pelée, in the Northern part of Martinique island. For several decades it has produced numerous lahars that directly threaten the Prêcheur village, at the mouth of the river. In recent years, the most important lahars have been correlated to massive collapses of the Samperre cliff, 9 km upstream from the sea, that create a reservoir of loose material at the bottom of the cliff. In 2010, a lahar started from this reservoir, destroyed a bridge and inundated part of the Prêcheur village. A new major period of collapses of the Samperre cliff started on 2 January 2018, involving more than 4 × 106 m3 of material. In the following days, intense rainfalls triggered several lahars that reached the Prêcheur village but remained confined in the river bed. Since then, lahars and collapses have continued to occur, even though their frequency has decreased with time and their intensity is smaller compared to the onset of the crisis. One single lahar overflowed the river bed on 22 February 2018 without significant impact on infrastructures.</p><p>In this study, we test different possible scenarios to model the first and most important phase of the collapse of the Samperre cliff, that occurred in early January 2018, with the shallow-water model SHALTOP. We constrain the collapse geometry with photogrammetric 3D models and LIDAR topographic surveys, acquired in 2010 and in late January 2018. We also consider an intermediate volume to take into account a possible retreat of the cliff face between 2010 and 2018. The modeled traveled distances are compared to field observations. Finally, we use geomorphological and geological observations to identify potentially unstable structures within the cliff, and model the associated collapses.</p><p>These simulations provide insights on the possible geometry (extent and depth) of the debris reservoir at the bottom of the cliff, after a major collapse episode. This is of prior importance in order to estimate the location and volume of future lahars. In order to investigate their dynamics, we model the major 2010 lahar, for which the initial debris reservoir volume is known (about 2 Mm3). We first simulate the progressive remobilization of the reservoir by water with the r.avaflow numerical code. In a second test, we impose instead a constant flow discharge upstream until the same volume has been released. We test different parameters to identify which ones have the most significant influence on the lahar travel time, from its initiation until it reaches the Prêcheur village.</p>

Carbon nanotube (CNT) based polymeric composites exhibit high strength and thermal conductivity and can be electrically conductive at a low percolation threshold. CNT nanocomposites with polystyrene (PS) thermoplastic matrix were injection-molded and high shear stress in the flow direction enabled partial alignment of the CNTs. The samples with different CNT concentrations were prepared to study the effect of CNT concentration on the cutting behavior of the samples. Characterizations of CNT polymer composites were studied to relate different characteristics of materials such as thermal conductivity and mechanical properties to micromachining. Micro-end milling was performed to understand the material removal behavior of CNT nanocomposites. It was found that CNT alignment and concentrations influenced the cutting forces. The mechanistic micromilling force model was used to predict the cutting forces. The force model has been verified with the experimental milling forces. The machinability of the CNT nanocomposites was better than that of pure polymer due to the improved thermal conductivity and mechanical characteristics.

This study proposes a procedure of damage inspection for the infrastructure in the harbor. Because most infrastructures in the harbor are submerged under the water the damage inspection is very difficult to process. Normally, divers with special scheme of damage inspection are required and the cost is very expensive. Therefore, a two-stage inspection strategy is proposed. After the first stage of inspection the more detailed second stage inspection will be requested dependent on the examination results. In the second stage of inspection particularly, it is focused on the wharf structures of steel-sheet pile type, where the related items are identified corresponding to the characteristics of the structural system.

High population of inhabitans in watershed area is an important factor which increase watershed’s damage so that, proper land conservation should be done. Research in the watershed Wae Lela has been done to analyze the dominant factors causing soil erosion due to changes in land use, and determine the amount of erosion after land use change in the watershed. The research method was field survey with a synthetic approach pattern by using free surveys observation distance. This observation distance used according to the pattern of land use changes on certain land units, with the type of profile observations/boring. The study found that land use in the watershed Wae Lela has undergone considerable changes in the last 25 years between 1988-2013. Natural forest generally has been transformed to be used for landfarming. Fram planted with multiple cropping of cloves, nutmeg, coconut, tubers, vegetable was become less effective to prevent erosion. This change leads to increased erosion which mainly occurred in mixed farm area up to  6415.06 t/ha/year; covered an area of  220.6 ha or 26.2% of the research area.
